Parallel Lives: Katherine of Aragon and Catherine de Medici

Parallel Lives: Katherine of Aragon and Catherine de Medici

In this episode, Dr. Emma and I set Catherine de Medici and Katherine of Aragon side by side—two queens whose lives reveal the price of power and the strength required to survive it. Katherine of Aragon held firm against Henry VIII’s attempts to cast her aside, defending her daughter’s right to inherit England’s crown. Catherine de Medici, long dismissed as an outsider in France, became the strategist who steered a kingdom through wars of religion and the reigns of her sons.

Hands-On History: Historical Playwriting with Rebecca Lyon

Historical playwrights such as William Shakespeare have been instrumental in telling the history we know today. What a fascinating occupation - one could get into deep water with Elizabeth I if she was displeased. Historical playwrights today have much more creative autonomy in the 21st century. Today, Heather Darsie is joined by historical playwright Rebecca Lyon. Learn about what it is like to use playwriting as a historical outlet. In Her Words: Thus Bestowed On Me the Name of Sophia

In Her Words: Thus Bestowed On Me the Name of Sophia

In the last episode we learned about Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia, and in that episode there was reference made to her daughter Sophia. This season I'll be presenting Sophia's book, Memoirs of Sophia, Electress of Hanover 1630-1680. But, as noted by our last guest Professor Dr Nadine Akkerman, this book is written as satire, and should be taken as such. -- Images of people Sophia mentions in her writings: Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of James VI/I and Queen of Bohemia; Portrait as a widow. Miniseries on Queen Mary I: Mary's Legacy

Welcome to our miniseries on the very much-maligned Queen Mary I of England. Thanks to PhD candidate Johanna Strong for orchestrating this entire series by teaming up with some of the leading researchers in the field. In this episode, Johanna's guest is Eilish Gregory, and they'll be discussing Mary I’s legacy in the late seventeenth century. Eilish is a postdoctoral fellow at Durham University and focuses her research on Catholicism and queenship in the early modern period. Her book, Catholics during the English Revolution, 1642-1660: Politics, Sequestration and Loyalty, was published last year and she’s recently had a chapter published in Mary I in Writing, entitled “Mary I During the Popish Plot and Exclusion Crisis: Memory and Catholic Remembrance”. --- Commercial FREE for patrons!
