Haemin Sunim, bestselling author and Buddhist monk on mindfulness and slowing down #206

He's described as "the 'mega monk' who wants us to slow down and embrace our imperfections."

Haemin Sunim is one of the most influential Zen Buddhist teachers and writers in the world. What he offers, is bite-sized buddhism, and it's made him a huge celebrity. His books have been translated into over 30 languages and are great guides not only to mediation but also to overcoming the challenges of everyday life.

I met him in Central London last week and as you'll hear, he instantly started turning negatives into positives.

And... I loved the way he told me he reads his own books for advice.

He has more than a million followers on Twitter (@haeminsunim) and Facebook. Check him out and enjoy listening.

Focus

Focus

How to improve your focus with leading performance coach Karl Morris #83 According to scientists, we are surrounded by so much technology these days, even a goldfish can now focus on something for longer than a human. Researchers surveyed 2,000 participants, and the results showed the average human attention span has fallen from 12 seconds in 2000, or around the time the mobile revolution began, to eight seconds. Goldfish, meanwhile, are believed to have an attention span of nine seconds. Yeh, we need to do something about this. When I spoke to my friend Karl Morris on Zestology a while back, it got a big response. He's a leading performance coach in the world of sport and kind of a big deal (though he'd be far too modest to admit that himself). Last time we looked at designing a good day, and asked the question, 'What does a good day look like'. So we've gone in for more good days, more staying in the present and more what Karl calls Neutral Thinking.  It all adds up to improving your focus and attention. How will this podcast help you? You'll get tips on staying in the moment, and improving your attention and focus. And we look at mindset too. Not positive thinking (which can be unrealistic), not negative thinking (which is just meh), but Neutral Thinking, which is more based on being optimistic but realistic at the same time. This podcast is brought to you by Bulletproof Coffee and supplements. Bulletproof is for anyone that wants to perform better, and features supplements and products based on 20 years of mind and body performance research. I use Bulletproof - all the time - and I've sorted a 10% discount for Zestology listeners. Simply use the code ZESTOLOGY at checkout.

Honestly Healthy's Natasha Corrett on tasty food and an exciting life #82

Honestly Healthy's Natasha Corrett on tasty food and an exciting life #82

Natasha Corrett is one of the UK's best known chefs and healthy eaters. She's got a ridic amount of followers on Insta/Facebook/Twitter etc, but despite all the press she's done and her huge profile, when she met me, it was the first podcast interview she's ever done. And it was a good one too - very revealing. I came with at least two things that I'm changing straightaway. One of them, randomly, doesn't involve cooking but high-tech fire alarms. Nice one Natasha and thank you.  When you listen to the podcast, you'll also hear Natasha and I talking about her, Jamie Oliver, and a very large mushroom. Click here to see the outrageous shroom pic.

Triumph over (extreme) adversity with actress Gemma Oaten #81

Triumph over (extreme) adversity with actress Gemma Oaten #81

Coming up: one of the most emotional stories I've had on Zestology. Gemma Oaten is a well-known actress here in the UK, rising to fame on Emmerdale. (Try explaining the appeal of Emmerdale to an American!) Behind her rise though was an almost unbelievable tale of triumph over adversity. She has had it rough. Gemma was only 10 when she first became ill after negative comments at school affected her self esteem. And from there it was a downhill spiral into an eating disorder. Today on Zestology, Gemma's story of how she nearly lost it all and before getting back to full health and fulfilling her dreams.

Sleep

Sleep

The Sleep Doctor - with Dr. Michael Breus #80 How do you sleep? I thought I knew most of the important stuff about sleep, morning routines, and caffeine, but I just interviewed Dr. Oz's sleep doctor specialist, Dr Michael Breus, and he told me some stuff that blew my mind.  I'm actually writing this with a cup of coffee by my side, and I've changed my morning routine (and coffee routine) because of the information I learnt from Dr. Breus. He's seriously well qualified. In addition to his private practice where he treats athletes, celebrities, and the like, he also "trains other sleep doctors and consults with major airlines, hotel chains, and retailers to provide the optimum sleep experience for their customers." So if you're interested in improving your sleep, and therefore performance and energy levels - listen to today's Zestology.
