#142 Oliver Burkeman - How to Live A Life That Feels Good (without a to-do list)

#142 Oliver Burkeman - How to Live A Life That Feels Good (without a to-do list)

Oliver Burkeman is a British writer and former Guardian columnist best known for Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, exploring how accepting life’s limits beats chasing productivity hacks.

We recorded this right before Oliver’s show, crammed into his dressing room at the Assembly Rooms. It’s intimate, honest, and very Origin Story: where did these ideas come from, and how do they shape a life you’re proud of? Oliver (author of 4,000 Weeks) takes us past productivity hacks to acceptance, attention, and the power of choosing enough.

In this episode

The efficiency trap: why getting faster just attracts more work

“Life task”: finding your next right thing with the resources you actually have

Planning that breathes (navigation, not micromanagement)

Daily-ish over streaks—the kinder path to consistency

Hobbies done for their own sake (the case for atelic joy)

Attention over productivity: designing a week that actually feels good

AI, inboxes, and why “caught up” is a myth

--

Tell me in the comments: what would you cut this week if you truly accepted you’ll never be on top of everything?

#14 - Joe Foster - Founder of REEBOK - the story of what became the worlds biggest sports brand.

#14 - Joe Foster - Founder of REEBOK - the story of what became the worlds biggest sports brand.

Joe Foster is the retired founder of Reebok and author. I loved reading his new autobiography “Shoe Maker” (available now). A working-class story in its truest form. His grandpa invented the running spike in the 1800s under the business JW Foster and Sons. Joe unravels the entire Reebok story from leaving JW Foster and Sons and the ideation of the name Reebok to becoming the world’s largest sports brand topping almost $4 billion in revenue. Reebok now has Cardi B and Ariana Grande sporting the brand. Reebok recognised that sport became street. Joe, and Reebok, not only were shoe makers but were vehicles for female empowerment. Reebok’s FREESTYLE shoe was labelled as the first sneaker for women. A shoe made from glove leather that became the perfect shoe to support the aerobics craze. Joe tells all in retrospection at 86 years of age! He also shares his thoughts on apprenticeships, what entrepreneurs inspire him today and he gives some words of wisdom to set me on my way as a young 22 year old man. It was a privilege to have Joe on – thanks! #13 - Sam Capps – Understanding, Accepting, Forgiving our Trauma – The Bro Society

Sam Capps is the host of The Bro Society – an intimate men’s mental health talking group based out of Norwich. Sam’s own life experience encouraged the development of the talking group. Sam has been on a journey of understanding, accepting and forgiving his own trauma and mental health. He came on the podcast today to encourage me to do the same and I swallowed a bittersweet pill. Expect to learn how our belief systems are constructs of our experiences and how we can unpick these to live a more liberated life. Also expect to learn how art therapy can be used to identify and eliminate self-destructive thoughts. Lastly, hear Sam’s opinion on what characteristics the listeners think make a “strong man”. Thanks Sam for such a warm and cathartic experience. - Sam on Instagram -> https://www.instagram.com/samcapps The Bro Society on Instagram -> https://www.instagram.com/thebrosociety/

#12 - Lewis McFarlane - Our New Years Realisations

Lewis McFarlane stops by (again)... You might remember Lewis McFarlane from episode number 2 of the podcast. Lewis is an online coach and a really close friend. So, I am super excited that he opened up to me on another podcast. This episode is a completely different speed and there is no host! Lewis and I share our 2021 realisations. We open up about how we have changed since we first came together on the podcast and why these changes in our mindset and lifestyle were critical for our wellbeing. There is really a stark contrast – arguably for the better. We speak about how we ultimately tied happiness to achievement during the initial stages of the pandemic. We spoke about why having what we deemed as a “bulletproof” mindset was detrimental to our mental health. Lewis talks about how he has lost followers due to being more authentic online. We speak about how vulnerability is our new superpower. Lewis also tells all about his relationships and most importantly his plans for pancake day. I also roadmap my entire genesis story and I detail the “why” behind The Development by David Podcast – including all my personal hardships. I hope you enjoy this one and we welcome any feedback! #11 - Jonny Campbell - How on earth do you become a Radio Presenter?

On today’s episode, I welcome walking talking ball of charisma and radio presenter Jonny Campbell to the podcast. You might recognise Jonny (or his voice) from WESTFM Sundays if you’re Ayrshire based. You might also recognise him as JOBBY - as this how he often accidentally signs off his emails. Have you ever wondered how the heck you even get on the radio? What makes a good presenter? What is the WORST mistake you could make on air? How the call in system works? Expect to learn as Jonny TELLS ALL. This episode was a WHOLE LOTTA fun. We had a great laugh - it is a much slower paced conversation. That being said – there are some major overarching points of self-development laced throughout. I hope you enjoy this one and we welcome any feedback! You know where to get us.
