Weird Science (1985)

Weird Science (1985)

We fired up the old VCR again this week for the classic Weird Science: The tale of two horny friends Gary and Wyatt who are tired of being social outcasts and not getting any action. With Wyatt's parents gone for the weekend, the two perverts try to create the world’s first real doll.

Using only Wyatt's computer, random photos from their wish boards and a Barbie doll the duo gives birth to their “perfect woman” with the limitless powers of a genie. Hilarity ensues including group showers, new interracial friendships, random bikers, dated sports cars, and a magical sucking chimney. So let’s all kick back with a glass of scotch and remember the time when it was ok to use magic to get laid.

The Money Pit (1986)

The Money Pit (1986)

This isn't just a podcast about '80s movies; it's a podcast about FEELINGS. Or at least three guys' ideas on cheating, romantic comedies, and home inspections. Listener Joe in Alexandria, VA, commissioned 1986's "The Money Pit," in which Tom Hanks plays the same role he played in every '80s movie and Shelly Long is 100% swappable with Shelly Duvall.  In this episode of Shat The Movies, we explore: horrible '80s hair Brazilian weddings America's obsession with big houses ice cream shop chic and the ubiquity of Euro weirdos in '80s movies. Roger Roeper shares his theories on romance. Gene Lyons discusses the psychological sensitivity of his erections. Dick Ebert laments movies with self-referencing theme songs. And the Shat Crew explores the strange mirror universe that exists in Gene's house parties. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Just when you thought we had covered all the '80s space classics: "E.T.," "The Empire Strikes Back," "The Last Starfighter," and "The Thing," listener John Clyburn takes the podcast where no Shat has gone before with "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Star Trek II widely is considered the best "Star Trek" movie ever made, and "Shat The Movies" certainly recognizes why: a chesty Ricardo Montalban, a young Kirstie Alley, and a surprise death that came years before "Game of Thrones" decided anyone was fair game. But look closer, and you'll see a few cut corners, a few plot holes, and one totally disgusting reason to sleep with cotton balls in your ears. Why do the sets look so cheap in a post-Star Wars era? Why are the deaths to melodramatic? And why doesn't anyone at Star Fleet come up with better security protocols than sending your admiral down to check things out? If you like nerdy commentary, this is the episode for you. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Shat The Movies listeners were asked to choose from six of Dick Eberts' favorites for this week's podcast, but their top choices already had been commissioned by other listeners. We get it: You love Dick. We've done "Demolition Man" and "The Karate Kid," so you're stuck with the film Rotten Tomatoes rated the Greatest Sci-fi movie of all time: "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." Find out how to pronounce Reese's Pieces and how "E.T" made the candy an overnight success. Learn the Shat Crew's bloody history with animal dissections, and debate whether an alien visiting Earth is more likely to be a miracle messiah or a Typhoid Mary. Gene Lyons praises "E.T." for being secretly spooky, while Roger Roeper and Big D examine the possibly racist undertones of the 1980s Halloween costumes. We'll also cover why E.T.'s has the voice of a chain-smoking woman, whether the alien's design was brilliant artistry or cheap chupacabra, and how Steven Spielberg beat his own box office record when he made "Jurassic Park." The Rock (1996)

The Rock (1996)

Most "Shat The Movies" episodes are commissioned by listeners who want to hear us revisit films they love. But this one was commissioned by a podcaster who wanted to hear us cover one of Big D's favorite movies.  Drew Zakmin, of "One Headlight Podcast," shelled out a few bucks and opened the gates to Michael Bay's greatest cinematic achievement, 1996's "The Rock." It's got everything we've come to expect from a Michael Bay film: explosions, rain, patriotic slow-mo, and even groups of guys in wheelchairs.  "The Rock" is utterly mindless summer popcorn fun, but we're not complaining. Dick Ebert sees the beauty in side characters that gently tug on racial and sexual stereotypes. Gene Lyons takes care to praise the perfect amount of Nicholas Cage-ness while respecting the real star of this movie: the always-destined-to-die-while-wearing-a-headset Michael Biehn. And Roger Roeper explores the bizarre Goonies underbelly of Alcatraz.  If you're a fan of using science to kill rogue Marines, don't like soft-ass shit, and want to see the Sexiest Man Alive in one of his most famous roles, this is the movie for you. The Boondock Saints (1999)

The Boondock Saints (1999)

"The Boondock Saints" went from the hottest script in Hollywood to a pathetic five-theater release, to one of the biggest cult classics of the late '90s. But does Troy Duffy's underground hit film live up to all the hype, or was it just a weird byproduct of an edgy era?  Listener Jim L. from London wired some money across the pond to commission this shoot-em-up episode of Shat The Movies, exposing Big D to his first taste of The Saints in action. Did you know Duffy originally wanted Mark Wahlberg, Kenneth Branagh, and even Robert De Niro in this movie? Gene did. Did you know there's some lovely side dick? Rog did. Did you know "The Boondock Saints" paved the way for "John Wick" to be made? It's not a fact, but Gene's pretty sure of it. Also explore whether "The Boondock Saints" is loosely based on Kevin Smith's "Dogma," what constitutes telegraphing homosexuality, and Duffy's surprisingly artistic use of slow motion. Kindergarten Cop (1990)

Kindergarten Cop (1990)

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, "I'd like some parenting advice from three male podcasters stuck in the '90s?" If you answered yes, then this is the podcast for you. Listener Stephanie commissioned "Kindergarten Cop," the ninth Arnold Schwarzenegger title featured on "Shat The Movies" and a perfect portrait of Arnold's awkward shift from action to comedy. Be there for Arnold's first passionate on-screen kiss, learn the difference between parrots and ferrets, find our why Roger Roeper doesn't want kids, and explore possible ties between "Kindergarten Cop" and the Third Reich. If that isn't enough for you, the Shat boys also surface Gene's and Big D's fighting days, advise on how to escape killer ex-husbands, and obsess over Schwarzenegger's pube-like facial hair. The Cable Guy (1996)

The Cable Guy (1996)

With Big D visiting Gene and Roger in Arizona, this week's "Shat The Movies" keyword is "friendship." And what better movie to exemplify friendship than Jim Carrey's smash '90s hit? No, not "Dumb and Dumber" (which actually won in listener voting), but "The Cable Guy," a movie Roger Roeper can quote start to finish and Gene Lyons never had seen.  We called an audible this week, actually visited Medieval Times in Scottsdale, Ariz., and immediately recorded this candid review of a dark comedy largely unappreciated in its time.  "The Cable Guy" really caught out attention and unearthed some hot topics, including the ethics of hiring sex workers, the dynamics of one-sided friendships, the genius of Ben Stiller and Judd Apatow, the magic of stolen cable, Big D's dream party, Jim Carrey's gigantic paycheck, multilayered gags, false accusations, and a possible darker side to Carrey's character, Chip Douglas. Oh, and we're still going to do "Dumb and Dumber." This podcast isn't a dictatorship.   Subscribe & Follow Android: http://shatthemovies.com/android Apple/iTunes: http://shatthemovies.com/itunes Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat Website: http://shatthemovies.com/   Help Support the Podcast Donate with Paypal: http://shatthemovies.com/paypal Donate With Venmo: https://venmo.com/shatpodcasts Shop Amazon With Our Affiliate Link: https://www.amazon.com/?tag=shatmovies-20 Sponsor's Listener Survey: http://shatthemovies.com/survey Leave an iTunes Review: http://shatthemovies.com/review Vote for our Next Movies: http://shatthemovies.com/vote Feeds & Social Media: http://shatthemovies.com/subscribe-and-follow Leave a Voicemail: (914) 719-SHAT - (914) 719-7428 Email: hosts@shatthemovies.com Listen to our TV Podcasts: https://shatontv.com/shat-on-podcasts Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Dogma (1999)

Dogma (1999)

"Shat The Movies" celebrates 127 successful episodes of lighthearted banter about silly movies by reviewing a 1999 Kevin Smith hit that was labeled "blasphemy" by the Catholic League and bore its own warning label for offensiveness: It's "Dogma,' y'all. Listener John U. from Minnesota commissioned this controversial comedy, and really he got two movies for the price of one. In one movie, John got an all-star cast including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, George Carlin, and Alan Rickman. In the other movie, he got pathetic attempts at acting by Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, and Smith.  Roger Roeper tries to convince Gene and Big D that Smith is to comedy what Tarantino is to action dramas. Big D tells tales from anti-masturbation men's groups. Gene rails against schoolgirl outfits for strippers. And Kevin Smith tries to cram every idea he's ever had into 120 minutes of film.   Subscribe & Follow Android: http://shatthemovies.com/android Apple/iTunes: http://shatthemovies.com/itunes Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat Website: http://shatthemovies.com/   Help Support the Podcast Donate with Paypal: http://shatthemovies.com/paypal Donate With Venmo: https://venmo.com/shatpodcasts Shop Amazon With Our Affiliate Link: https://www.amazon.com/?tag=shatmovies-20 Sponsor's Listener Survey: http://shatthemovies.com/survey Leave an iTunes Review: http://shatthemovies.com/review Vote for our Next Movies: http://shatthemovies.com/vote Feeds & Social Media: http://shatthemovies.com/subscribe-and-follow Leave a Voicemail: (914) 719-SHAT - (914) 719-7428 Email: hosts@shatthemovies.com Listen to our TV Podcasts: https://shatontv.com/shat-on-podcasts Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite
