Repo Man (1984)
Listener Scott O was disappointed to see #RepoMan (1984) excluded from the Pantheon of Shat. As a result, he mailed in an envelope of money initially earmarked for his son's graduation to hear the Shat Crew review the coming-of-age film for suburban white punks. Rog and Big D steal a 1964 Chevy Malibu and cruise the streets of Los Angeles, searching for hidden messages of a movie that's best known for its surreal overdubs of profanity when broadcasting on basic cable. Rog praises the training program at Helping Hands Acceptance Corporation while Big D confesses his addiction to watching tow truck repossessions on YouTube. The Shat Duo both respect Miller's quest for the truth concerning extra-terrestrials. So, strap on your most oversized earrings and cue up your favorite punk album as we travel to the United Fruitcake Outlet for the latest STM episode. Kingpin (1996)
With previous reviews of The Big Lebowski and Dumb & Dumber, STM listener Jake V felt the timing was right to commission the 1996 Farrelly Brothers' gutterball, Kingpin. Rog and Big D embark on a road trip through a memory montage that transports the duo to a simpler time when the local bowling lanes were as greasy as the snack bar pizza. Big D reminisces on his time spent in junior bowling leagues. Rog recollects the time Amish teenagers tried to lure him into an abandoned Pennsylvania cabin. The OG shat twosome fawn over the embodiment of coolness, Bill Murray. Plus, we explore proper ball fitting, prosthetic hand attachments, and whether or not Chris Farley would have been a better Ishmael. These topics and more in the latest episode of Shat the Movies. p.s. - Do you have thoughts on ANY of our past movie reviews? Can you change our mind on a previous Shat score? We want to hear from you! Send us an email to Hosts@ShatTheMovies.com or leave a voicemail at 914-719-SHAT. Include "The Drop Box" in the title. Crocodile Dundee (1986)
What would be worse? Getting attacked by a 16-foot crocodile...or enduring a cross country road trip while listening to the entire back catalog of Shat The Movies? This question was raised by a Canadian couple, Andrew & Sarah C., as part of their commission review of the 1986 hit, Crocodile Dundee. Roger, Big D, & Ashley embark upon an adventure into the rugged outback of the Northern Territory to review the movie that Aussie listener, Bruce describes as "...pretty accurate, for the most part." Rog finds comfort in the cultural similarities of his Floridian childhood, Big D explains the meaning of "Stubby Holder," and Ashley longs for the days of adventure journalism delivered in a tangible newspaper. All three share their encounters with Aussies in the wild. Plus, we examine high-fashion of the '80s, how to be #Crocwise, and which Shat Host could survive a 56-day walkabout in the bush of what Big D calls "Tropical Canada." p.s. - yes, we know Roger screwed up the story of Rod (not Ron) Ansell. C'mon, though...it's Roger...what did you expect? Sling Blade (1996)
We’re heading down to Arkansas for some french fried potaters and off-color street jokes as the Original Shat Trio review Billy Bob Thornton’s magnus opus, Sling Blade. The 1996 Academy Award Winner is the 3rd commission from long-time listener, Greg R. Gene reminisces about small-town living, Big D questions the pacing early on, and Rog petitions Hollywood to send him the stylist responsible for BBT’s post-Sling Blade “glow-up”. So, Spread some on mustard on your biscuits and join us for the latest installment of Shat the Movies. Tremors (1990)
Can you fly, sucka? It’s time to load up our 1980’s era Japanese pick-up truck with vault poles and fishing dynamite as we head to the desert town of Perfection, Nevada for the scariest game of “hot lava” with giant landshar—um—graboids. As a birthday present to himself, listener Mac E commissioned the 1990 cult horror-comedy film, Tremors, that spawned SIX(!) direct-to-video sequels as well as a short-lived television show. Ash LeBeck joins desert natives Gene Lyons & the King Bee as they explore Kevin Bacon’s sex appeal, the town economy, and earthworm anatomy. Additionally, learn why the studio delayed the film for 2 months, ensuring Tremors would be played on basic cable for the next 30 years. After the review, be sure to stick around for some of the strangest shat-outs we’ve ever received. These topics, and so much more, on this week’s episode of Shat The Movies. The City of Lost Children (1995)
Get ready because the Shat crew is going international for the first time. Listener Lisa sent in a very persuasive email that convinced us to take on the 1995 French science fantasy film, The City of Lost Children, our inaugural foreign language review. In this episode, Ashley defends the decision to let her children watch this movie, even if it makes them weird. Gene pines for an alternate life in New Orleans and using his French classes, and Big D talks about the recurring problems with his dreams. We also break down the music and style choices, the attention to detail from set-pieces to the casting of the child actors, and why this movie should never be remade by an American director. Strange Days (1995)
Before James Cameron set sail for Hollywood history with Titanic, he almost sank Kathryn Bigelow’s directing career with the giant iceberg of a box office failure, Strange Days. Listener, Mike S, commissioned the Shat crew to finally answer the question: “How could a movie that accurately predicted America’s collapse into social inequality, police brutality, and obsession with living other people’s lives through technology have failed at my local theater?” Ash 'Mace' Mason makes her Shat the Movies debut with Gene & Roger as the trio explores Y2K death cults, questionable casting choices, and how much screen time we should give to sexual assault. Put on your SQUID wig, pop in that Sony Mini-disc, and “jack-in” for the latest STM episode. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)
When we recorded this episode, the Coronavirus pandemic had just begun. Four weeks later, listener Jeremy’s commission gives us the timely 1981 post-apocalyptic Mad Max: Road Warrior. In this episode, Gene points out the worst choice of vehicle in a gas shortage. Big D talks driving on the wrong side of the road, and Roger talks Mad Max tinfoil. Additionally, we discover the science of boomerangs and their connection to a lonely childhood and answer the question of who from the pod would be whom if cast in this movie (beyond the obvious choice of Big D as Lord Humongous). And, to wrap it all up, we get in a goodbye to every listener just in case the virus overtakes us all before we hit publish.
