Part 36 - Dr. Mark Cucuzzella & Zach Bitter on Fat Adapted Running, Fine Tuning Your Body, and Helping the Community

Part 36 - Dr. Mark Cucuzzella & Zach Bitter on Fat Adapted Running, Fine Tuning Your Body, and Helping the Community

Today we have a double header with 2 great figures as well as athletes in the low carb community.

Zach Bitter is the 100 mile American record holder and 12 hour world record holder for ultramarathons. He hosts the Human Performance Outliers podcast with Dr. Shawn Baker and has learned many lessons from amazing people along the way. He has wealth of knowledge of fat adapted athletics and fueling himself with meat while healing his body.

But first we have Dr. Mark Cucuzzella who is a Professor of Medicine at West Virginia University medical school, Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a Family physician for 20 years, and a Lt Col in the US Air Force Reserves. He's doing such great work in his hospital and community and has implemented some very beneficial programs. He's a great guy and was a big supporter of the film early on.

He brings up that Zach Bitter was actually in the FASTER study that previous podcast guest Dr. Jeff Volek famously did that rewrote the textbooks on fat oxidation. Lot's of good stuff her beyond running!

Thanks again for helping us finish the Indiegogo campaign. We hit our goal, but that certainly wasn't the amount needed to finish the film. You can still preorder a copy of Food Lies on Indiegogo by clicking through FoodLies.org. Get the limited edition Eat Meat shirt there and check out the other perks - that's at FoodLies.org.

A quick update about me - I just started training for a Decathlon at UCLA. I'm going to do it running on meat and fat. Many of you probably saw the video of me pole vaulting for the first time in over 16 years on social media. This is going to be awesome. Everyone there thinks I'm insane for doing it at 35 while never having done most of the events before, let alone all of them in 2 days at the Masters Championships in Iowa. Also the mostly eating meat, fish, and eggs thing is really tripping them out. Follow along on social media. Also I'll have a totally unrelated big announcement in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned - I'm very excited. Now here's Mark and Zach.

Show notes

Zach Bitter

  • Hosts the Human Performance Outliers podcast with Dr. Shawn Baker
  • He holds the 100 mile American record with an average pace of 7 minutes per mile
  • He also holds the world record for farthest distance run in 12 hours
  • He spent the first half of his running career on the conventional high carb diet that all runners believe is best
  • He followed a whole foods approach with lots of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables - no processed foods or junk food
  • At age 24/25 he was having some bad symptoms that shouldn't face a young man in his prime
  • He wasn't sleeping well, he didn't have sustained energy throughout the day, and had poor recovery after workouts
  • He looked towards nutrition as a cure and found the low carb, high fat diet
  • Got turned on to Dr. Phinney and Dr. Volek early on so he had a solid approach to transitioning into fat-adaptation correctly
  • He transitioned in the off-season and sleep and energy immediately improved
  • Recovery and mobility greatly improved after races once fat-adapted
  • What are some other sports where it's good to be fat-adapted?
  • It seems to be dependent on how soon you're going to train again. If it's only once per day it seems carbs aren't really necessary. 2 sessions per day, probably yes.
  • He only needs carbs when doing intensity plus high volume. Either one separately he doesn't.
  • How he got into the carnivore world
  • He's done 73 podcast episodes with various experts and has learned a lot
  • 2 big things are that vegetables aren't really necessary it seems and there's a lot of myths about protein that are turning out to not be true. There's probably no such thing as too much protein
  • My ultra simplistic theory is that animal foods are +1, processed foods are -1, and plant foods are just neutral (or 0). Plant foods aren't doing much for you other than taking up space in your stomach from things that could be worse. The real nutrition is from the animal foods.
  • He agrees with this and builds his meals around fatty meat, eggs, and some full fat dairy
  • He ferments his own vegetables
  • If you have digestive problems try doing only animal foods and add stuff back in slowly and carefully to track it
  • Hunter gatherers used to eat (and still do) fermented plant matter out of animal's stomachs, especially in cold environments when that was their only vegetation
  • Check out the HPO podcast he does with Shawn Baker
  • Zach does running and nutrition coaching - find him at zachbitter.com
  • He's on twitter at twitter.com/zbitter and Instagram at instagram.com/zachbitter

  • The textbooks say humans can only oxidize 0.8 grams per minute but in the study they doubled that. Dr. Mark did it himself and measured 2.0 grams of fat/min
  • HIs heart rate dropped down significantly after only 1 minute because he is in such good shape and running so efficiently on fat - great for recovery
  • If you're a medical professional and would like to make changes in your community or otherwise you can contact him at afrundoc@gmail.com

Part 48 - Dr. Gary Shlifer on The Flawed Medical System, Nutrition Dogma, and Solutions Through Ancestral Principles

Part 48 - Dr. Gary Shlifer on The Flawed Medical System, Nutrition Dogma, and Solutions Through Ancestral Principles

And we're back from Canada with amazing footage in hand. The film tour was a huge success. I posted a bunch of stuff from Tara's farm on Instagram that you have to check out I'm @food.lies and she is @slowdownfarmstead. It was the best food I've ever had in my life. All the animals and plants were grown from start to finish on her land, killed and butchered by her and her husband Troy, and cooked and prepared from scratch all the way down to the raw butter that was bright yellow and chock full of nutrients. I was full in a way I've never felt before. Truly an unbelievable experience. We also were in Calgary filming at TK Ranch with the awesome Dylan Biggs. He's doing great things on rocky, thin soil that can't be used for anything else but cattle - who really are nature's miracle. We also had the 2 meat-ups in Toronto - such a good time. So many great people came out and the talks were inspiring. Then there was the fat-adapted Pentathlon where I did the 5 events back to back on the track for the North, Central American and Caribbean World Masters Athletics Championship and took 2nd in my age group. I didn't eat all day and then during the event I had a little raw liver and 2 thin slices of salami and cheese to get a little something in my stomach just in case. The last event was the 1500 and everyone was dying after a long, hot day. I had full energy still and came in 2nd overall. Maybe I would have done better if I was training instead of traveling around stuffing my face at all these events and farms. Now onto this episode which is with a great board certified internal medicine specialist and functional/root cause medicine practitioner Dr. Gary Shlifer. He's a founding member of Sapien.org and I talked to him live from his clinic that I also work out of in Woodland Hills, California. He's part of a new wave of doctors that see through the outdated textbooks and teachings and aren't going to continue that standard "sick care" medical practice that doles out pills and meds and never treats underlying disease. He's got a lot of passion and been on some big podcasts and youtube videos lately and is doing great things! We're following in the footsteps of Virta Health and reversing tyor 2 diabetes and obesity with diet, lifestyle, and a collaborative model using technology and health coaches. You can find out more at http://Sapien.org/sapienhealth A few more things before we begin: The Meat-Up in San Diego is growing by the minute. We have special guests Dr. Paul Saladino, Alyse Parker from a couple episodes ago, William Shewfelt, Dave Feldman just freed up and is going to make it, Logan Sneed AKA Logan FusionLean, and now the great Dr. Ken Berry. We'll all be at Queenstown Public House wednesday night July 24th. RSVP at NoseToTail.org/event It's going to be awesome! It's the night before the Low Carb USA conference starts. If anyone wants last minute tickets message me on social media and I'll give you a coupon code for 20% off. You can also find the nose to tail meats on that site NoseToTail.org where we have grass finished ground beef with grass finished organ meats mixed in. One which has about 30% liver, heart, kidney, and spleen, and one with about 5% of those organs. There's so many other delicious and nutritious things there like bone marrow bones, bone broth, beef and buffalo bacon, high omega 3 pork and chicken, omega 3 ground pork with organ meats mixed in, lamb, and buffalo. Just check it out. It's all delivered to you each week as long as you're in the contiguous 48 US states. We still have the Eat Meat shirts and other perks if you preorder the film on Indiegogo - click through FoodLies.org We are trying to scrape the last money together for all these awesome graphics we're creating to really make this film shine and get the info across. It's not cheap, even though we're calling in some favors. Lastly, please support this podcast on Patreon.com/peakhuman and get the extended show notes and my sincere gratitude. It's not possible without the community. Thanks so much for supporting all my efforts! Now here's Dr. Gary Shlifer! BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Preorder Food Lies: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman SHOW NOTES We are live in person with Dr. Gary in his clinic in Woodland Hills in Los Angeles He's my business partner at http://Sapien.org and has had his own private practice for 3 years now while also working in hospitals around LA He practices root cause medicine, functional medicine, or whatever you want to call the better way of doing things instead of just slinging medications and treating symptoms like many mainstream doctors You invest a lot of time and money into medical school, it makes it hard to accept that there are things you learn about medicine health care should be questioned It's scary for doctors to go against big organizations like the American Diabetes Association My content challenged the foundational knowledge of what Gary was taught in medical school and what triggered him to question what he had learned There is more and more anecdotal "science" surfacing that allows us to question what nutritional science tells us, for example the carnivore diet [15:12] In order to prove to a modern day American that we shouldn't be eating processed foods we need a randomized placebo control study, you should just need common sense Everyone who has stuck to our SAPIEN diet has found that the overall benefits extend so much further than weight loss In just 50-60 years of misinformation people are disconnected from what food should really look like Gary grew up eating foods like pate, caviar, and liver and onions and when he moved to America, he was almost convinced that he shouldn't be eating these foods but now he is grateful that his upbringing allowed him to have an open mind When we go against human nature, eating fake foods and avoiding the sun, we get these illnesses Animal foods are the heart of our nutrition [19:57] and plants are no longer fallback foods, we don't need fallback foods, we can't pretend that a cucumber or bell pepper is healthier than a steak If an alien looked down on human's they would think we are nuts for going from eating nutrient dense animal foods to a plant-based diet [27:43] In medical school, there is a huge focus on basic science, disease management, you don't learn a lot of practical information or how to actually help people and you do not learn nutrition [28:01] He learned all the science behind metabolism and macronutrients, but they never connected that to food Doctors don't deal with nutrition, you just refer to the dietician or nutritionist In the 4 years of medical school, you don't learn anything about food and nutrition All of the medical dietary recommendations are anchored in very little research that doctors get attached to Gary's passion for end of life care [34:31] The doctors have to listen to the hospital administrators and if you fight back, you are at risk of losing your job, license, being sued, etc. Story of Gary prescribing a low-carb diet in a hospital to a diabetic patient and the hospital giving him the "low-carb" option which was a cheese burger with a bun and baked potato with all the fixings, given to the patient by the hospital's nutritionist Gary was given the tools to keep sick people alive but not take care of the general population Gary has seen doctors held to the fear of legal retribution and not do the best thing for the patient because of this Gary became very vocal about whole-foods, low-carb diets in his practice and he also had his own transformation too and people were interested in what he was doing He knew he had an uphill battle when his highly educated peers didn't understand that carbohydrates and sugars were contributing to poor health outcomes Gary cleans up other doctor's mess, who are on countless drugs and have been given no meaningful dietary recommendations, and many are put on a plant-based diet The archaic ideas around saturated fat and cholesterol and plant-based diets [55:11] He has had his patients reverse his diabetes and other doctors tell them that they need a new doctor because he is recommending a SAPIEN diet which is high in animal fats despite them getting healthier [56:54] Patients are very confused about what to eat, and people are basically eating dessert for breakfast The SAPIEN diet is what humans should eat in the context of modern day America from an ancestral point of view with the addition of modern science The three pillars of the SAPIEN diet Pillar one: focus on protein, embrace fat, and minimize carbs Pillar two: nutrient dense whole foods Pillar three: condensed eating window We are building technology to help patients adhere to these diet and lifestyle changes and connect patients to doctors and health coaches Packaged foods have destroyed any innate food culture of our ancestors We can't accept that these fake foods are not part of a healthy diet, they are treats Where to find Part 47 - The Great Meat Debate w/ Mark Sisson, Dr. Paul Saladino, & Dr. Shawn Baker

Part 47 - The Great Meat Debate w/ Mark Sisson, Dr. Paul Saladino, & Dr. Shawn Baker

Ohhh man we have a special one today, everyone. I didn't want to release this as a podcast but hey, why not? I had some of the superheroes of meat eating in one film studio, so I had to take advantage of this opportunity to let everyone hear the audio version. You'll see this on the big screen - in Food Lies and maybe even other places someday. We shot it in our production studio which belongs to my Sapien.org business partner who is producing Food Lies with me. To set the scene a bit, it's a large warehouse and we were sitting in the middle on director chairs with 3 cameras filming. We hit 7 main topics based around meat. We started off high level for a general audience to ease in - why should meat be included as a part of a healthy diet? We went all the way into details of a carnivore diet and should it be nose to tail or just steak and eggs? We also talked about how much plant food we should include in our diet. I always include some - and Mark Sisson used to recommend including a lot - seems like things are changing though... So I definitely agree with the nose to tail meat-eating approach - so much so that I named my grass finished meat company after it. We have grass finished beef, buffalo, and lamb, as well as pasture raised pork and chicken. Our pork and chicken has been tested in an independent lab and has one of the best omega 6 to omega 3 ratios around. It's around 1.5 to 1 which is amazing! Most conventionally raised pork is 20:1 and conventionally raised chicken about 24:1. You can see the results on NoseToTail.org and also place an order. It's shipped out to all 48 contiguous US states each week on Monday and Tuesday. We also have ground beef, buffalo, and pork with organ meats mixed in. You get liver, heart, kidney, and spleen all grass finished and all mixed in so you barely taste it. If you can't support me in this way, you can join the Patreon and get the extended show notes for the podcast each week at http://Pateron.com/peakhuman and get invited to the private slack group while also keeping the show ad-free. We're in the final days of filming for Food Lies. People keep asking me when it will be released and unfortunately I don't know. We've been editing it for months and keep finding great new experts and stories to add. The world is changing by the day as well and it's hard to find a cutoff for what content to include in the film. Do we include the news that there's glyphosate in the Beyond Meat burgers? What about Miki Ben-Dor's latest study on human evolution and meat eating? Anyway, it's close to being finished but we still need to do a ton of graphics to illustrate all of these points and make these big concepts easier to understand - so it will take some time. We just got back from an incredible film tour in Calgary, Toronto, and Ottawa. Some awesome farmers and ranchers doing some great things for the land, the animals, and dispelling vegan propaganda. So much of the land on earth just isn't suitable for crops, yet works perfectly for cattle and other ruminant animals. Anti-meat activists are so clueless when it comes to this, it's a real shame. We're about to head out for the very last shoots in San Diego July 24th-27th based around the Low Carb USA conference. Some great doctors will be in town that we'll be getting in the film. Come say hi - I'll be at the conference a bit. We'll also have our Meat-Up there on Wednesday July 24th in downtown san diego with Dr. Paul Saladino and ex-vegan turned carnivore Alyse Parker from the last episode. RSVP at http://NoseToTail.org/event Can't wait to see everyone there! Now here's the mighty meaty men themselves - Mark Sisson, Dr. Paul Saladino, and Dr. Shawn Baker. BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Preorder Food Lies: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman SHOW NOTES Why should meat be included in a healthy diet? Human evolution and brain development relating to meat eating Bioavailable nutrients Where did we go wrong if we've been eating meat for all of history? Agriculture "was the worst mistake in human history" Our brain sizes have shrunk since agriculture We can survive on grains, but can we thrive? Fallback foods Are we eating the same meat as we did in the past? What about fruits and vegetables in the past? We've been eating meat in the same basic form for 2 million years yet plants are very new Only consistent food we've had for history has been animals Mark has always said "make half your plate plants" does he still believe this? You don't need the amount of calories you may think to still thrive and not be hungry Are the RDAs relevant to those who don't eat a bunch of carbs, sugar, and processed foods? Our nutrition guidelines are based on a bad diet Diet is turning into religion Much of our nutrition info is based on poorly conducted observational studies There is no nuance in nutrition reporting People eating the most meat in Asia have the longest life Replacing animal products always equates to processed versions that make food companies a lot of money What should the ratio of plant to animal foods be? What is the definition of an ideal diet? We need all the vitamins and minerals in the most bioavailable form with the least amount of toxins America eats 70% plant foods in our diet Peoples health improve as they eat more animals foods in many cases Do people really need a whole bunch of bulky fiberous plants? No benefit of fiber - where did this myth come from? Healthy user bias Vegetarian benefits go away when you control for people who also have healthy behaviors Meat is a status symbol in Asia Should we be eating Nose to Tail, or is it ok to just eat steak and burger patties? Organ meats provide all the necessary vitamins and minerals Our ancestors ate Nose to Tail and even did this as little as 100 years ago, but we find it weird today Animals eat the organs and fat and many times leave the muscle meat Shawn Baker does not believe the organ meats are necessary but agrees they are nutrient dense and are great Mark Sisson wants to live an awesome life and enjoy every bite of food Solve for the highest quality of life at all times People maybe shouldn't focus on tiny things that make maybe 1% difference We shouldn't have to use trackers to figure out how to eat and sleep Eating a species appropriate diet should be intuitive I think Nose to Tail eating was natural and intuitive Tastes are cultural What about meat eating and longevity? mTor and igf-1 Muscle mass and long life Carbs signal insulin more than animal protein Healthy diets are more about what you don't eat Closing statements BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Film site: http://FoodLies.org YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/FoodLies Sapien Movement: http://SapienMovement.com Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg Theme music by https://kylewardmusic.com/

Part 46 - Alyse Parker (RawAlignment) on Going From Vegan Celebrity to an Animal Based Diet

Part 46 - Alyse Parker (RawAlignment) on Going From Vegan Celebrity to an Animal Based Diet

Hey Hey welcome back. Thanks for listening and thanks for all the kind words about this podcast. I get tons of messages and emails weekly and the stories of change are inspiring. It helps to keep me going and put in the work to find amazing experts and put out a good show. Today we have Alyse Parker who used to go by Raw Alignment. She had a huge vegan following of over 750,000 subscribers on youtube and hundreds of thousands on Instagram. She did different plant based diets over the course of about 4 years including raw vegan and ended up with some terrible health conditions. I won't give up too much, but she's now eating almost completely animal foods. It's an interesting story and I hope you enjoy it! SHe's a great person and I'm looking forward to a meat up we'll be having in San Diego on July 24th with her and Paul Saladino. I'll announce that soon so people can RSVP. We have 2 Meat-Ups in Toronto coming up. One this Saturday at the world famous Speducci Mercatto with North America's only meat sommelier. Mikhaila Peterson, Tara Couture (who's @slowdownfarmstead on Instagram - my favorite account ever), and Bryan Gilvesy a sustainable farmer and speaker will be there as our guests of honor. They'll all be saying a few words and hanging out and eating the all you can eat delicious meat and some wine. We'll have the Food Lies team there as well so grab a ticket on http://NoseToTail.org/event We also have a free Meat-Up at The Simple Kitchen Friday JUly 19th. We'll have grass fed burgers and other paleo/keto/sapien options there for purchase as well as wine and beer. RSVP at the same place http://NoseToTail.org/event Comment or message me on social media if you'd like to have a Meat-Up in your city. A few other quick things. Please support this show on Patreon at Pateron.com/PeakHuman. I really need your support to keep this podcast ad-free. You'll get the extended show notes which are super information-packed and an invite to the private Slack group. You can still pre-order the film and get the Eat Meat shirts and the other great perks on Indiegogo. You can link there from http://FoodLies.org And last, but not least we have my grass finished meat company Nose To Tail. Don't need to talk about this because Alyse made her own advertisement at the end. We never talked about this beforehand, I promise. So here it is, the wonderful reformed vegan celebrity, Alyse Parker. SHOW NOTES Alyse is a YouTuber who created a following living a vegan lifestyle She lived on a fruit farm in Hawaii where she started a raw vegan diet After 4 years on a vegan diet she realized her health was declining Her experience hiking the Appalachian trail She moved back to Hawaii and started experiencing loss of appetite, sinus congestion, brain fog, fatigue, and loss of memory and found out she had mold toxicity Out of desperation she tried a carnivore diet and felt immediately better She now realizes everything she was missing from a vegan diet She believes there is a trend with vegans who notice at year 4-5 their health begins to decline There is no open dialog around the negative side effects of veganism If you are vegan you believe you are eating the ideal diet There is a trend with vegans developing sensitivities to foods Her experience with such a big following when her identity was centred on veganism The reactions of her followers transitioning away from veganism Why is there a stigma around red meat for women? How she felt after adding animal products back into her diet She wants to continue sharing her journey online to inspire people to make any changes they need to make and for them to know it's ok not to have your health figured out Hearing other people's stories gives you permission to question things and see it helping someone else helps you make rational decisions Alyse's main messages online are not revolved around food, her message is about tuning into yourself and building confidence http://instagram.com/alyseparkerr BUY THE MEAT: http://NoseToTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Film site: http://FoodLies.org YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/FoodLies Sapien: http://Sapien.org Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg Theme music by https://kylewardmusic.com/

Part 45 - Miki Ben-Dor, PhD on The Humans Eating Fatty Meat For All of History

Part 45 - Miki Ben-Dor, PhD on The Humans Eating Fatty Meat For All of History

Alright we have a special episode today. We're lucky to hear all about Miki's new paper looking at the complete story of our dietary past and humans being high-trophic level carnivores. He gave me a sneak peak at this awesome 40 page paper he's submitting for review. Miki Ben-Dor got an undergraduate and masters degree in economics and then went back to school later in life to study paleoanthropology. He's now Post doctoral fellow at the department of archeology of Tel Aviv University. You can find some great presentations on youtube and his paper "Man the Fat Hunter" published in 2011. Love the work he's done - he's hit it from all angles and it all lines up. We ate meat for all of human history. Ok here's a bit of business to take care of - Let's see how concise we can make this. Get your own grass finished meat at Nose to tail.org. Support the show on Patreon at patreon.com / peak human. Preorder the film at FoodLies.org. Watch highlights from the film on the Food Lies youtube. Get daily content on the Food Lies instagram, twitter, and facebook. SIgn up for the newsletter on Sapien.org. Get on the waiting list if your a health coach, doctor, or other healthcare practitioner at sapien.org. I think there's too many things at this point. Maybe just pick 1 of these and go for it. I really appreciate it. At this point we're a community powered company. We're scrambling around here at SAPIEN trying to make this all happen without outside money or influence. Really love this tribe. We can't go back to the glory days thrusting spears at wooly mammoth and gorging on fatty meat, but we can still try to bring the community together and spread the word and focus on our own health and people around us. Now let's hear from Miki Ben-Dor BUY THE MEAT http://NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Film site: http://FoodLies.org SHOW NOTES Miki completed his undergrad and masters in economics and switched later in life into paleo anthropology His research is largely focused on the reconstruction of the human diet and the relationship between plant vs animal foods and the proportion of each as far back as 2 million years ago If we want to understand human evolution we have to go much further back than just modern hunter gatherers Gut morphology similar to carnivores When we compare humans to chimpanzees, Miki has calculated that to be 77% smaller colon and about 60% longer small intestine which is exactly the direction of carnivores The size of our stomachs is another cue Gut pH is very convincing too since herbivores have a more basic stomach pH whereas omnivores have more acidic and carnivores have very acidic stomachs and scavengers have the most acidic, humans are most similar to scavengers The size and number of human adipocytes is closely related to carnivores vs herbivores One of the main differences between their diets and today's diets is bone marrow, Miki believes our ancestors ate a lot of bone marrow and had the ability to break bones which appeared broken to get the marrow Liver is also the first thing that humans would go for when they killed their prey The evolution of the Savannah vs forest and how this changed the diet It's easier to hunt larger animals than smaller animals Humans ate plants for all of history, there is no question that we ate them, the only question is how much Hypercarnivore is defined as a carnivore that eats 70-80% of energy from animals and the rest from plants If you want to be safe, eat 80% from fat and meat Using the Hadza to reconstruct the human diet is completely inaccurate You also can't use modern hunter gatherers to see what our ancestors ate Everytime we find plant matter in human remains, everyone celebrates but it doesn't tell us anything about how much they ate Isotopic discoveries are more reliable than archeology and definitely shows that we are mostly carnivorous Humans do not want to spend energy gathering plants when they can spend that energy hunting animals Humans have higher fat reserves than other animals which allowed us to get through periods of starvation and we can afford to because we don't chase or escape we don't need to be fast All large carnivores eat large animals and are hypercarnivores Miki thinks we spread across the globe because we can hunt animals of any size, with plants you have to use trial and error and adjust to them Wherever humans went, these large animals decreased and that humans could have been the reason for the decrease in megafauna Domesticating plant foods and animals was about 10,000 years ago As we approach agriculture revolution we started eating more plant foods but our stature also decreased and our brain size decreased Fat was prized for all of history and plants are fallback foods He tried to find evidence for plants in the human diet and couldn't, all his evidence showed was that humans were carnivores Papers showing mixed diets are misleading and these scientists are not reporting proper evidence http://paleostyle.com http://twitter.com/bendormiki BUY THE MEAT http://NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Film site: http://FoodLies.org Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg http://youtube.com/c/foodlies Theme music by https://kylewardmusic.com/

Part 44 - Keith Baar, PhD on How to Live Long & Live Strong

Part 44 - Keith Baar, PhD on How to Live Long & Live Strong

Aaand we're back! Season 4 is coming in hot with some great guests and some more interesting formats. I have some special episodes coming up like the meat-eating heroes panel that we filmed for Food Lies with Mark Sisson, Dr. Shawn Baker, and Dr. Paul Saladino. I also put together a compilation episode that is 6 months in the making with amazing stories from people around America using nutrient dense diets to change their life. What is a nutrient dense diet you may be asking and who am I? The podcast is growing by the day and I want to give new listeners a quick overview. If you're not new, be sure to stick around there's a special event announcement at the end. I'm Brian Sanders and I'm creating the feature-length documentary Food Lies which covers the entire story on what humans should be eating including an evolutionary history, where we wrong in the last 60 years, and how we can do this sustainably. We're in the process of editing now and are shooting some of the last segments in Canada in July. We don't have a release date yet unfortunately. After years of studying different diets and eating strategies, I've landed on what we're calling the Sapien diet or way of eating or lifestyle. Because it's not a diet - it's a nutrient dense way to eat for life. I believe you can even dip into non-ideal foods on the weekends or at a special event once you hit your goal weight and if it doesn't interfere with food intolerances or restrictions. The Sapien diet is based on 3 simple pillars. 1) Nutrient dense whole foods. THis means mostly animal foods which are the most nutrient dense and have the most bioavailable nutrients. This means eating nose to tail and including foods like liver, bone marrow or broth, grass fed butter or tallow, eggs, cold water fish like salmon and sardines, oysters and other mollusks, fermented vegetables, and low sugar fruits like avocados and olives. 2) is for each meal focus on protein, embrace fat, and minimize carbs. The animal protein should be the base of each meal but make sure it comes with enough fat and don't be scared of it. Most carbs are nutrient poor and really don't provide much to you other than getting in the way of your body burning the fat from your meal or better yet, from your body. And the last pillar is 3) don't eat all the time. You could call this a condensed eating window or intermittent fasting. Try to eat within an 8-10 hour window each day and let your body rest from constantly having to digest food. There's a lot more to this so please listen back from episode 1, check out http://sapien.org/diet that's sapien.org/diet, and we'll continue to put out more details on the Sapien framework in the future. Ok so onto this episode - I'm starting off the new season with a bang. Maybe you haven't heard of Keith Baar? You should have. I hope to get some of these researchers doing groundbreaking and valuable work into the spotlight Keith is a brilliant researcher who has done great work in his career and published a ton of papers. Much of this work around mTor, muscle protein synthesis (AKA building muscle), collagen synthesis (AKA building all the other tissues that are so important in your body), and so much more. He's a professor of Molecular Exercise Physiology at UC Davis and works in the Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, College of Biological Sciences and the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology, School of Medicine. He has a bachelors degree in Kinesiology from the University of Michigan, a masters in Human Biodynamics from UC Berkeley, and a PhD in Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Illinois. You'll learn a ton about how to live long and live strong. He only goes to the gym for 10-12 minutes two times per week yet is still getting stronger each year. We talk about how to live a long healthy life and if eating too much meat is going to help or hurt that. I love talking about the benefits of eating meat so much that I started a grass fed meat company called Nose to Tail which can be found at http://NoseToTail.org We ship nutrient dense boxes of meat to all 48 contiguous US states. We have ground beef with liver, kidney, heart, and spleen mixed in so you get all the nutrients and none of the hassle and barely any of the livery taste. We have so many other things like bone broth, marrow bones, tallow, suet, and all the normal cuts as well. You can also support my work at http://Patreon.com/peakhuman This is where we keep the podcast ad-free so I don't have to take anyone else's money to talk about (or be influenced by) their products. This is also where you get the amazing extended show notes put together by Kristi with all the studies and further details included. This is valuable stuff. I'd say better than most nutrition colleges. Definitely better than most nutrition programs teaching all this whole grain nonsense actually. And of course the Food Lies film is still on Indiegogo and needs support. We're desperately trying to finish it. Check out the "EAT MEAT" shirts there - they are a great way to let people know they can't blame the steak for what the fries did. One more big thing! We're having some incredible events in Toronto on Saturday, July 13th and Friday July 19th. We'll be having a Food Lies special supporters luncheon at North America's only meat sommelier's restaurant Speducci. That's right - he's a meat sommelier. They will be serving all you can eat platters of their famous cured meats, Speducci meat kabobs, as well as lamb chops, cheeses, and wine. This is going to be a tremendous event with special guests of honor Mikhaila Peterson (peak human episode 18), Tara Couture from SlowDownFarmstead on Instagram (peak human episode 26), and sustainable farmer and speaker Bryan Gilvesy, who will each say a few words I'll be there with some of the Food Lies and Sapien team as well. Would love to see all you beautiful people in Toronto! Get your tickets on http://NoseToTail.org/event We'll have another casual one of these in San Diego on July 25th and comment on this podcast post on Instagram if you would like to have an event in your city. Part 43 - Dr. Dale Bredesen and the End of Alzheimer's, How YOU Can Prevent it, and Hope for All Degenerative Diseases

Part 43 - Dr. Dale Bredesen and the End of Alzheimer's, How YOU Can Prevent it, and Hope for All Degenerative Diseases

This is an interview I've been looking forward to for years. Dr. Dale Bredesen is shaking up the medical world by showing that Alzheimer's actually can be prevented, treated, and sometimes even reversed. This is really important to me because my mom is the final stages of Alzherimer's and I, of course, am doing everything I can to prevent myself from falling to the same fate. I believe the Sapien way of eating and lifestyle is doing just that - setting me up for my best chances at my longest healthspan. You can learn more about this at http://sapien.org/diet Dr. Bredesen and I agree on all the core principles. He really is describing a Sapien diet with his protocol. We're only at odds with the ratio of plant foods to animal foods. As I've posted today on social media, I think people are actually more on the side of animal foods than they think. In the context of a whole foods, low carb diet without refined grains, sugar or vegetable oil, more often than not people are getting the majority of their calories from animal foods without necessarily realizing it. Only people eating Standard American Diets or Mediterranean Diets and the like are getting most of their calories from plant foods from all the empty calories coming from grains and other carbohydrates. Many health figures in this space say things like "a plant heavy diet" or "fill half your plate up with greens" and people take this as being akin to a vegetarian diet. As I showed in my post, a daily intake where about 70% of the plates are filled with plants are actually 92% animal foods by calories. I actually eat this way a lot. This is carnivore adjacent and is part of the Sapien Framework. You're still getting a ton of flavor, variety, and nutrients from plants (even though they're not as bioavailable), but you're really getting 90% of your calories from animal foods. So make your own decision on the ratio of plant to animal foods, but from what I've found, higher animal foods is more species appropriate for homo sapiens, and is actually what most people avoiding empty calorie, nutrient poor foods are already doing. As always, I didn't want to press him on this. I don't invite people on my podcast to tell them I don't agree with their opinions. I'd love for this to be debated with a moderator at some point, but as long as it's a 1 on 1 Peak Human podcast I'm letting the guest speak their minds. Here's a bit of Dr. Bredesen's extensive resume. He received his undergraduate degree from Caltech and his medical degree from Duke. He served as Resident and Chief Resident in Neurology at UCSF, he was the Director of the Easton Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research, he's a Professor in the Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at UCLA School of Medicine, and the Founder of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. The Bredesen Laboratory studies basic mechanisms underlying the neurodegenerative process, and the translation of this knowledge into effective therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, leading to the publication of over 220 research papers. He and his group developed a new approach to the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, and this approach led to the discovery of subtypes of the disease, followed by the first description of reversal of symptoms in patients with MCI and Alzheimer's disease, with the ReCODE protocol, published in 2014, 2016, and 2018. His book, The End of Alzheimer's, is a New York Times Bestseller and has been translated into 29 languages. I'll largely skip the plugs for today. Everyone listening knows about the Food Lies film on Indiegogo, the Patreon at http://patreon.com/peakhuman and my new grass fed meat company http://NoseToTail.org If you find any value in this podcast or my other content on YouTube or social media channels, please consider supporting me and my projects there. I wish I could really get across how much it means to me. It's honestly the only way any of this is possible. Thanks so much, and I'll most likely end season 3 with this episode and come back in a couple weeks with an amazing season 4. Here's the future legend, Dr. Dale Bredesen. BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Preorder Food Lies: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman SHOW NOTES Dr. Bredesen has been studying the phenomenon of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) for 3 decades and have published over 200 papers on his research Understanding the fundamental nature of the disease is how we can design an effective treatment His protocol is different because it targets the root cause, not the symptoms like most AD drugs do Humans are extremely complicated and there is no one single therapy that will treat the complexity of AD AD is the result of the brain protecting itself from different insults The protective response in the brain causes the brain to shrink and "retreat" so that there is less for foreign substances (insults) to target Amyloids are antimicrobial, bind to toxins, and change the brain's response to glucose but when they are overproduced and build up that's when problems occur Some of the contributors to AD are: chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, glycation damage, toxin exposure, decrease in nutrients, hormones, trophic factors, poor vascular support He has identified and categorized 6 different types of AD: inflammatory, atrophic, glycotoxic, toxic, vascular, and traumatic Paraffin candles produce toxins that damage the brain Most damaging mycotoxins (produced from mold) are the ones you breathe - test your home for molds Go to www.survivingmold.com to learn how to test your home for mold and if you are concerned about mold exposure to learn about what to personally get tested For overall markers you should get tested, you can order tests directly from Dr. Bredesen's site www.drbredesen.com or go to your doctor and test markers Markers for glycotoxicity: fasted insulin, HbA1c, and fasted glucose Markers for nutrients, hormones, and trophic factors: o Vit. D, pragnenolone, progesterone, estradiol, testosterone, free T3 and free T4 (for thyroid), TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), and reverse T3 (which is an inhibitor of the effect of your active thyroid hormone) Inflammation markers: HS-CRP, TNF-a, IL6, IL8, IL1-b Don't wait until it's too late to check for these things, because AD is preventable Glycotoxicity and how sugar is toxic Humans are not designed to eat sugar Overconsumption of sugar is linked to hypertension, CVD, diabetes, dementia, arthritic, leaky gut, and more Sugar is this generation's smoking, we will get to a day when we think back to how crazy it was that we were eating this stuff We have biomarkers that will tell you whether AD is creeping up on you, so check early in life because you might not feel sick now, but that doesn't mean it's not on its way All these lifestyle and diet changes that you make to prevent AD, apply to so many other modern illnesses If AD runs in your family, you should be interested in prevention AD should be a rare disease APOE4 is the most common genetic risk factor If you have a single copy of APOE4 the risk is ~30% If you have a double copy of APOE4 the risk becomes greater than 50% For people with APOE4, find out early and get on prevention, and you will have a low chance of getting the disease 21st century medicine is about root cause and prevention There is no mono-therapy for AD Look out for symptoms of early cognitive decline like the lack of ability to learn new things, losing organizational skills, not being able to do simple calculations, not being able to find the right word, getting lost in familiar places Don't shake these off as "senior moments" Basic things everyone can do: optimize insulin sensitivity, follow a low-carb, moderate protein, high (good) fat diet, exercise, get enough sleep, reduce stressors in your life, detox, avoid or fix any gut issues, go into periods of ketosis His diet plan is called "KetoFlex 12/3" "Keto" for going into periods of ketosis "Flex" because it is flexitarian, if you want to be a vegetarian or eat meat you can do either "12" because he wants people fasting for at least 12 hours between dinner and the next day's first meal "3" because he wants people to finish eating at least 3 hours before they go to sleep The Big Four to avoid: grains, simple carbs, dairy, and lectins He has had amazing success with his patients and has been publishing results since 2014 He has never had someone at risk come in for prevention and develop even mild cognitive impairment (MCI) People who come in with subjected cognitive impairment (SCI) see improvement People who come in with MCI the majority improve People with full-blown AD, some people improve and some people don't He has had people score zero on cognitive tests that have improved The most important point of all of this is that if you get put on a drug for AD you might get a little bump but you fall back to declining again, his approach targets what is actually causing the decline, the people who get better sustain their improvement Complexity gap between the complexity of the problem (human illness) and the data sets that traditional medical doctors are using to treat them (aka we can't expect a simple mono-therapy to treat a complex condition) Dr. Bredesen's daughter is a brain health coach and you can find her at www.siabrainhealth.com His protocol includes sauna for riding the body of toxins We are swimming in an Alzheimer's soup with the amount of toxins we are exposed to in our modern world Get rid of toxins by sweating (sauna and exercise), high fiber diet, optimizing glutathione levels, filtered water, urination, each one of these gets rid of different things If you have leaky gut, fix that The importance of sleep Current research on macular degeneration His new book coming out "The First Survivors of Alzheimer's Disease" will be about people's first-hand stories of people told they had no hope but used his protocol and got better and have kept themselves better The future of medicine will need to look at how humans were evolutionarily designed to live You are not powerless to AD, you have control over it We can reduce the global burden of dementia, we can fight cognitive decline Find Dr. Dale Bredesen at www.drbredesen.com His Facebook page https://facebook.com/drdalebredesen/ BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Film site: http://FoodLies.org YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/FoodLies Sapien Movement: http://SapienMovement.com Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg Theme music by https://kylewardmusic.com/

Part 42 - Abel James the Fat Burning Man on Ancestral Eating, Optimal Living, and Diet Wars

Part 42 - Abel James the Fat Burning Man on Ancestral Eating, Optimal Living, and Diet Wars

Hello again, my friends. Welcome back, I'm Brian Sanders and this the podcast that you just turned on and don't need a reminder on what it's called. But maybe you need a reminder of my name because I didn't put it on the cover art and I didn't put a picture of myself with my shirt off… yet. That's how you'll know it's a real podcast in the Fitness & Nutrition section of iTunes. Until then, I'll just say hello again to return listeners and if this is your first episode make sure to start back at episode one. Every episode is important and a valuable piece of this elaborate web we call nutrition and health. I had a great time kicking back with the Fat Burning Man Abel James in this episode today. We are on a really similar paths and believe in a lot of the same things. He has a degree from Dartmouth in Psychological and Brain Sciences, he's the author of The Wild Diet, he's a radio show host, musician, and was also featured on the ABC show Diet Wars where he helped his contestant Kurt lose 50 pounds in 6 weeks using, you guessed it, a high fat diet. He's a great resource for everyday living and tips and an awesome member of the community. Let's get to the episode after a few brief updates of what's going on lately. We're selling out of a lot of the great grass finished sustainably raised meats at http://NoseToTail.org Maybe don't try to put in an order just yet. It's a complicated process to use an entire animal, butcher it into all the cuts, manage an inventory, and ship it out across the country. In the meantime if you'd like to support this show you can become a member of the tribe on Patreon at http://patreon.com/peakhuman. You'll get access to the comprehensive show notes Keto Kristi does there. It really will help to keep this content free. And if you're one of the few people who hasn't pre-ordered the Food Lies film you can do so at http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post I'm about to put in another Eat Meat shirt order so grab one on Indiegogo quick. This really is a tribe and the whole community is involved in making it work. Thanks so much, I really can't express how appreciative I am of everyone. Let's hear from the fat burning fella himself, Abel James. BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Preorder Food Lies: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman SHOW NOTES SHOW NOTES Travelling opened his eyes to other ideas around food and the culture around foods There is a lot of tradition around food that people in the US are not aware of Fast food and institutions changed the traditions in the Western world Our ancestors had the right instincts around food, our grandparents never ate like we do now It just takes a little bit of common sense to realize why our current nutrition climate is flawed quote from Nina Teicholz "but like lost languages, lost skills, and lost songs, it takes only a few generations to forget" We live in this world where things are supposed to be getting better and improving yet we have so many problems Abel's technology detox went as long as 8 months If you believe in fasting than you should believe in taking breaks from technology We should be eating seasonally How he turned to a minimalist lifestyle, sold all his belongings, and travelled around with his wife His "Wild Diet" is based on eating whole foods, primarily seasonal vegetables and meat Most of your energy will come from fat if you are eating an ancestral diet You can abuse anything that starts out as healthy, so eat seasonally The American diet has extremely low diversity, ancestrally we had a lot of diversity in the diet Eating intuitively On a day to day basis he incorporates fasting, he started with 16/8 but now he prefers to eat only one meal a day which comes naturally for him He breaks his fast with some raw vegetables and bone broth, and for dinner he will have a home-made meal Eating out all the time likely leads to eating poor quality food He packs his own food when he travels When you prepare your own food, you know what's in it, you have confidence in it and you won't be blindsided by foods that set off cravings for days It's important to recognize your "trigger foods" Are the foods you are eating making you hungrier or satiating? This is a good compass and very telling of if you are eating the right foods The words "paleo" and "keto" are misleading people to think these are health foods when they are still hyper-palatable processed foods If he wants to celebrate with food he will make a healthier alternative He was featured on the TV show: ABC TV called Diet Wars, a fitness and weight loss competition where trainers/coaches compete to get their clients to lose weight His client lost 82 pounds and has kept the weight off after a few years During the Biggest Loser, everyone regained all their weight or more, it's not healthy to lose weight extremely quickly or in unhealthy ways there are ways to do it healthy His strategy was to eat whole foods, embracting fat, and utilizing intermittent fasting Nutrition is blown out of proportion in the media with names like vegan, paleo, and keto, everyone is looking for the new next diet but the truths lie in these simple principles and there's no one diet fits all His show was almost 10 years ago and he still believes in the same principles Where to find Abel James: www.fatburningman.com for health and food related content www.abeljames.com for music related content BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Film site: http://FoodLies.org YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/FoodLies Sapien Movement: http://SapienMovement.com Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg Theme music by https://kylewardmusic.com/

Part 41 - Dr. Frank Mitloehner Dismantles Every Myth You've Ever Heard about Cows, Methane, Climate Change, Animal Welfare, The Environment, Meat Eating, and More

Part 41 - Dr. Frank Mitloehner Dismantles Every Myth You've Ever Heard about Cows, Methane, Climate Change, Animal Welfare, The Environment, Meat Eating, and More

You guys are in for a treat. Dr. Frank Mitloehner is about to destroy every argument every anti-meat propaganda spewing know-it-all has ever let slip from their quinoa-loving lips. I'd list them all to get you fired up, but it would take too long. You're just going to have to listen up and pay attention to every second of this episode. Dr. Mitloehner has a masters in Agricultural Engineering and Animal Science from University of Leipzig, Germany, and a PhD in Animal Science from Texas Tech University. He's currently a professor and air quality specialist at UC Davis and conducts research and outreach that is directly relevant to understanding and mitigating air emissions and greenhouse gases from livestock operations, as well as the implications of these emissions for the health and safety of farm workers and neighboring communities. He has served as chairman of a global United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) hosted partnership project to benchmark the environmental footprint of livestock production. This is big, everyone. He'll talk about how he helped correct the FAO data (which is the world leader in this kind of information). These are the bogus statistics used in the film Cowspiracy and that vegan activists still try to use today. He corrected the scientists and showed that the numbers were completely false. He's also published dozens of papers on the topics we'll be discussing today and travels the world giving lectures on this as well. All this talk about livestock is making me hungry. I'll have to drop a plug in for my grass fed meat company Nose to Tail which you can find at http://NoseToTail.org It's keeping this podcast alive and hopefully me as well. We have some amazing products like the Primal Lite ground beef with liver, kidney, and heart mixed right in. It's so good, I've been eating a lot of it lately, and you don't even taste all those nutrient dense bits and pieces. This is such a great way to get in your vitamins and minerals. It's basically the world's best multivitamin - a delicious patty of sustainably grown beef raised right here in Texas. We've got great boxes you can get delivered to your door or you can also create your own. You gotta at least check this stuff out at http://NoseToTail.org I spent a long time creating the site myself and am very proud of it. If great steak isn't your thing then you also can support this show on Patreon at http://patreon.com/peakhuman or click through the show notes. For a few dollars a month you can keep this thing chuggin along and also get the full extended show notes. These things are like a free college education… or better. Like this podcast, a lot of work has been put in them. You can also grab the "It's what else you EAT not the MEAT" t-shirts while getting a copy of the Food Lies film at http://Indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post We still definitely need your support as we try to scrape enough money together to keep these editors fed. They're down for the cause. They're eating beef and skipping out on those worthless carbs and sugars. Trust me, they're living this stuff and making this film the best it can be. So keep me from taking on any outside sponsors and support these worthy causes and ventures. I really appreciate it everyone, this wouldn't be possible without the generous support of the community. Thanks again and here's Dr. Frank Mitloehner, my new favorite guy around. EAT The MEAT http://NoseToTail.org SHOW NOTES What he does on a day to day basis to study animal agriculture, emissions, air quality, and climate change Vegan propaganda films like Cowspiracy made people believe animal agriculture caused more GHG than the whole transportation industry The report "Livestock's Long Shadow" was publicly retracted https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/climatechange/7509978/UN-admits-flaw-in-report-on-meat-and-climate-change.html He helped to show that they used totally different inputs and methods that In California transportation is responsible for 50% of all emissions and livestock is only responsible for 5% In the US livestock is actually 3.9% of direct GHG emissions and all fossil fuel sources combined is 80% according to the EPA What is a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and what is it for beef? They created the global partnership LEAP which he was the first chairman of Created global guidelines to circumvent these problems for the future but many people still use these flawed statistics entire food choices Our food choices will affect the lives of others no matter what diet you follow Animal proteins are far more bioavailable than plant proteins Biological value of animal products in ratios that are well-suited for humans needs to be talked about more Environmental impact of plant proteins are relatively low but the nutritional value of these are lower than animals In the US 90 million beef cattle and 9 million dairy cows Vast majority of beef cattle (~75 million) are on pasture at any given time and 15 million are in feedlots Cattle only spend 4 months in feedlots the rest of their life they are on pasture Over their lifetime cattle consume 85% non-edible animal feed Study mentioned: Tackling climate change through livestock (FAO) Cattle are very efficient, they make use of a resource that humans cannot (cellulose) Humans cannot digest cellulose The vast majority of ruminant-produced food stems from the digestion of cellulose which humans can't do anything with 2/3 of agricultural land in the world is "marginal land" which cannot be used to grow crops Ruminants are going to be very important for population growth Domesticated animals and pets contribute to GHG (e.g. horses which there are 9.5 million of vs only 9 million dairy cows) People critique livestock's carbon footprint but not these companion animals Feedlots aren't as bad as we think Each feedlot animal has enough space, fresh water, a specific nutritional diet, and the animals are cared for Corn-finished steer will be on pasture for about 10-11 months and then will go to a feedlot for 4 months Grass-finished will be on grass its entire life (~26-30 months of age) The carbon impact of feedlot animals is actually less than grass-fed The hormones in meat argument is totally bogus US has the lowest environmental impact of any livestock producing country in the world (3.9% of GHG for all livestock combined) 12% of all GHG in the world stem from the US and 11 of the 12% that the US contributes stems from fossil fuels and 1% of this stems from food production 0.5% of the total GHG in the world comes from plant production and 0.5% comes from livestock 40% of food in US ends up in landfills and most are fruits and vegetables Fossil fuels are carbon sources and every time they are burnt you release carbon into the atmosphere CO2 stays in the atmosphere for ~1000 years Methane from ruminant animals starts from plants taking CO2 from the atmosphere combined with sunlight, used to produce cellulose and oxygen, now the animal eats the plants and exhale CO2 or they convert it to methane from the microbes in the animal's stomach Methane stays in the air for ~10 years because methane is very different from CO2 Livestock contribute to the CO2 cycle, the amount that animals add to the atmosphere is equal to the amount that is destroyed Fossil fuel derived gases just add to the atmosphere, whereas methane is consumed and destroyed CO2 has a GWP (ability of gas to store heat from sun) of 1 Methane has a GWP of 28 but the lifespan of these gases matter Methane is not just generated it is also destroyed whereas CO2 is only generated Problems with the Lancet "Planetary Diet" proposed by scientists that feel we should be plant-based claiming that this diet will protect human health and will be better for the environment Claims about a plant-based diet that were falsely advertised that impact our decisions GHG and carbon impact statistics in the Eat Lancet report were very flawed 150 years ago, we had 60-100 million wild ruminants (particularly bison) and today we have ~90 million beef cattle and they emit pretty much the same amount of methane The total amount of methane from ruminants has really not changed in the US since we just replaced natural herds of bison with domesticated herds of livestock What has changed is the number of cars and travel emissions Many misrepresented citations in the Eat Lancet paper Lab grown meat vs farm-raised meat Keeping cell-based meat "clean" of pathogens is very difficult, they are very artificial, and still require a ton of energy input There are 400 different products from a beef and therefore foregoing the whole animal means you need alternatives to all of these products Animal agriculture is a business and getting rid of this sector means many unintended consequences "Impossible Burger" cannot be sold in supermarkets because the FDA has not approved "soy leghemoglobin" to be sold, yet you can buy it in restaurants 84% of all vegans stay vegan for 1 year The total consumption of beef vs beef-like products is much higher, and shows that this movement is not as large as we think The most important decision we make day to day is what we eat and our decisions should be made with facts We are responsible for providing animals with the best quality of life and we must honor the animals that feed us EAT The MEAT http://NoseToTail.org Preorder the film here:
