We Choose Our Responses & They Define Our Lived Experience w/ Yale Director of Emotional Intelligence Marc Brackett

“Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.” This is the quote by Holocaust survivor Viktor E Frankl that headlines a new book titled, Dealing With Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want. The book comes from my guest in this episode, Marc Brackett. Mark is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University. Marcs research for over 25 years has focused on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health, and performance. The quote from Viktor Frankl that came from his time in a concentration camp, and that Marc has devoted his life to, is saying that no matter what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond. And my experience of humanity is that no matter what happens to them, even great traumas, tragedies, and victimizations, what harms them more than the incident or event is how they conceive of it and how they respond. My concern is that culturally we have come into a place where we don’t believe this. We feel it is our right and it’s just, to respond to pain, with pain. And to say otherwise is actually offensive. Looking at the mental health stats these days, I don’t think this perspective is working. This is the conversation you’re about to hear with Marc Brackett. Marc previously authored the bestselling book, Permission To Feel and most recently, along with Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann, Marc and his team co-created the Apple award-winning app, HowWeFeel, that was designed to teach emotion skills and enhance well-being. 626: The death of blame

626: The death of blame

In this show we hear a message from Zig Ziglar on a tough circumstance that create negative results. And...how it was turned around. Only...by changing attitude and perspective. And when attitude and perspective change, actions and behavior changed...and so did the outcome. It’s a powerful message. From it I asked this question on Facebook, "What is something in your life right now, you have been blaming? And if you let go and took responsibility for your own feelings and actions, would be freeing?" Or if you have a past experience with this, please share. Of course people did...share. It was tremendous. I had Michelle Prince join me to talk through the responses, you’ll get much from this show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

624: When and how should you speak negatively about someone?

We hear a clip from Zig Ziglar on the power of words. From it I posted this question on my Facebook page, "When and how is it ok to speak negatively about another person?". Folks, every response was...profound. Seriously. This question was about the best use of Facebook I’ve ever, ever experienced. Tom Ziglar joined me to talk through the comments. You will be...convicted, I very much believe, as this is a very, very real issue we all deal with, daily. And how WE respond, massively impacts our lives. Learn more about your ad choices. 623: John Ruhlin, The gifts for success

623: John Ruhlin, The gifts for success

Let’s talk about gifts. Nope, not your giftings as in talents and abilities, but literal...gifts. But the point is building relationships and standing out. It’s building social capital. It’s loving and caring for other people. John Ruhlin is our guest and he’s on the show because...he wowed me, as he has a sea of other people. Truly. He gifted me beyond the point of just feeling reciprocity, but I felt known and cared for. From it we’ve developed a friendship and will do more business, and hopefully life, together. I mean, hey...here I am telling the world about him! I brought him on folks, because I truly wanted you to hear his message, so you could increase your success as a result. His personal story of how he came to be the most known gift giver and business producer for some of the biggest names in business, like Jeffrey Gitomer, Keith Ferrazzi, Raymond James, Keller Williams, the Chicago Cubs and even Caesars Palace, and more, is tremendous.  The point is to help you stand out, grow your relationships and increase business in one of the  most fun and profitable ways ever...wowing people with giving. When I asked John what he most wanted to impart to the Ziglar audience, he said, “I want to inspire people to be radically generous with all their relationships. I want business leaders to be aware that if their clients are not actively sending them referrals, they have a loyalty problem.”  And folks, let me tell you, he does...just that. He’s got a great, free gift for you in a document…”The 10 Worst Gifts to avoid giving key clients” at www.thegiversedge.com. 622: Your personal, hard story is your key

We are talking about your story and your stage. So I interviewed Pete Vargas in shows 619 the main show, and 620, the Habits show. And I  just couldn’t leave his message alone, about story and stage. So I posted this question on Facebook, “If you were set on a stage before thousands to share something you felt was important, what are some aspects of personal story you think some people could/would connect with?” We got very in depth, heartfelt testimonies here, and I had Pete join me to help folks understand how to share their stories and struggles...and really connect with people, and leverage value for everyone. It was an incredible conversation. Pete is just amazing, his insight is tremendous and you will be inspired and empowered. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

620: Selling the love

620: Selling the love

We are talking about selling for love. I’ll explain. Two examples. Ever seen a GREAT movie that just wowed you? It made you feel great and you just wanted EVERYONE to experience it and benefit? You told everyone? Second example, imagine you have a loved one who is dying from a rare disease, your beloved spouse or parent, and you divinely meet someone who had the same issue but found an alternative treatment that is somewhat risky but literally cured the issue and saved their life, and you went to your loved one and fervently, unabashedly tried to sell them on doing it? Get the idea? In both cases you were selling, though you never thought of it that way. You were simply caring for others and trying to help them out of love. Well, Zig Ziglar loved sales. He placed sales people on a pedestal next to pastors. At least those who did it...right. Which is having a product or service you truly know will serve people well and selling it to those who need it out of care and love. I play a four minute clip from Zig that drives this point home. From it I posted this question on Facebook, “What do you sell that you feel is out of love for the person who really needs it?” We of course got great responses and Tom Ziglar and I read through them. Tom shared so many great stories as we read through the comments, you will get so much from this show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

619: Pete Vargas has a stage for your story, message and success

619: Pete Vargas has a stage for your story, message and success

We are talking about your story and your stage and we have a master with us...Pete Vargas. First though, you must know that Zig Ziglar came to fame primarily due to just that...his story and many, many stages. His main platform was live speaking events, but he impacted man more through audios and books. But He was a master of his stage. So here’s the deal, we all have a stage with our businesses. How do we capitalize with them? So to Pete Vargas. Ziglar is helping promote his upcoming workshops, but of course I’m digging into his personal story, which is significant. A quick bio...Pete is Founder and CEO of Advance Your Reach. If you look on Facebook he has an amazing amount of people, from famous folks you’d know to those who have attended his events...who sing his praises, to put it mildly. . Since 2003, he and his team have booked over 25,000 stages worldwide–and generated tens of millions of dollars of revenue through those stages. Pete has booked legendary speakers including Ryan Deiss, and Shark Tank’s Daymond John. He’s also shared stages with titans such as Michael Phelps, Robert Cialdini, Howie Mandel, and Brendon Burchard.Pete believes that your Signature Talk is the most powerful marketing tool you have and that stages are the fastest way to grow your business. Pete is the expert in knowing what to say on stage, how to identify and win the right stages, and how to scale the stage–generating revenue and impact. Through years of testing, he’s perfected the “Stage to Scale” system that has helped so many others land speaking engagements and leverage stages to grow their businesses and organizations. He has an event coming up Oct. 18, 2018 “The Power of the One Hour Launch”. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
