Fasting Q&A with Dr Jason Fung: Aeira Bone Broth, 5:2 Diet, Weight Lifting Fasted, Long-Term Ketosis, and More.

Episode #227

In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community:

1. Can people tweak the 5:2 diet with the two non-consecutive restricted calorie days as full fast days (water only) and reap the same if not better results, or must food in the form of nutrient dense and low calorie be consumed? [09:21]

2. I have seen videos of Dr Fung endorsing the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD). Does he, Dr Fung advocate it for T2D? I am asking because of the plant based (carb) items in the kit, like the soups, crackers, and bars and the potential spike in insulin and glucose consuming those items? [14:30]

3. While an individualized approach to managing and/or reversing diabetes is best, from a diet perspective, is it generally better to have a diverse diet and manage diabetes with medication if needed, rather than restricting your diet to avoid medication? [18:55]

4. Can one - or more importantly should one - practice OMAD to reverse IR or T2D? Is there a nutritional concern here? Is the length of time that you do OMAD a factor? [21:12]

5. Do I have to leave the weights workout for the last day of prolonged fasting and eat after the workout or can I work out with weights every day during a 5-day fast without problem and continue fasting AFTER the heavy weights workout? [27:01]

6. Is long term ketosis bad for the body? Some doctors are saying it is and you should carb cycle, but are there any studies supporting this? [32:27]

Fasting Q&A: Blood Ketones, Weight-Loss Protocol, Not Losing Weight, and Mood Issues

Fasting Q&A: Blood Ketones, Weight-Loss Protocol, Not Losing Weight, and Mood Issues

Episode #34 In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions: 1. I'd like to fast primarily for therapeutic reasons (mental health and autophagy especially) and aim to do three 42s. My issue is raging ketones! How high is too high when it comes to BK and at what point should I break a fast for this reason? [01:18] 2. What is the best protocol for weight loss? [11:58] 3. I am a TOFI and a pre-diabetic. What fasting can I do to reverse my T2D without losing weight? I noticed when I do extended fasting of 42 hours I lose too much weight. [21:18]  4. The one issue that I'm having the hardest time with is my mood during an extended fast (longer than 24 hours). I feel extremely irritable, agitated, quick tempered, & anxious, which is not how I normally am. I don't know if it's my cortisol levels, or what. Is this common? Fasting Q&A: Chia Seeds, ADF for Weight Loss, Gut Flora, and Stress Hormones

Fasting Q&A: Chia Seeds, ADF for Weight Loss, Gut Flora, and Stress Hormones

Episode #32 In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions: 1. I know you have mentioned chia seeds (in water) as a way to gently break your fast, but can I use chia seeds as a training wheel during a fast because they give a feeling of fullness? [07:25] 2. I do 18:6 daily and a 48 each week. It took much effort to get my gut health stabilised. I have completed a couple of 5-day fasts in the past, but now I am worried about what a 5-day fast does to the good guys in my gut. With no fibre coming in, how do they survive? I don’t want to compromise my good gut flora, but I’d like the benefits of autophagy and stem cell generation. [13:44] 3. I’ve been ADF’ing for 6 weeks. I typically fast 36hrs, only consuming plain water, salt, and 2-3 cups of black coffee. I am 46 and have had seven pregnancies. I have hardly lost any weight, only a couple pounds. What am I doing wrong? On my eating days, I eat 3 meals over 12hrs, lower carb but not keto, and add 2 Ts cream to my coffee those mornings. I mostly do not snack. I find it very hard to fast 42hrs. Would three 42-hr fasts be more effective than ADF with 36hr fasts? Does it take a while for results when peri-menopausal? [18:42]  4. As someone “recovering” from PTSD, I have been taught skills and tricks to reduce cortisol and adrenaline. From a recent podcast I learnt that fasting increases these and I am now concerned that it may create effects counter to what I am trying to achieve to reduce PTSD symptoms. Have you had patients with a similar concern? Is there perhaps a difference in duration, or other helpful hormones released at the same time, to differentiate it from the perpetually elevated stress hormones after PTSD? Fasting Q&A: Night Shifts, Coffee and Cream, Fat Fasting, and Markers of Insulin Resistance

Fasting Q&A: Night Shifts, Coffee and Cream, Fat Fasting, and Markers of Insulin Resistance

Episode #30  In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions: 1. I am a nurse, and I work night shift (7pm-7am). I usually follow a 20/4 IF eating schedule on my days off, but I’m struggling to figure out how to fast on my night shift schedule when I work 2-3 nights in a row. Do you have any suggestions for fasting and a night shift schedule? [01:06] 2. Does coffee with heavy whipping cream break a fast? [08:38] 3. What and how do you eat when doing a "fat fast”? Do you still recommend following TRE? [15:51]  4. Most doctors will order fasting glucose and insulin, cortisol, and A1C to check for insulin resistance. Are there other markers (laboratory or clinical) to know if your IR is improving after, say, a year of fasting? [24:29]  Have questions you want us to answer?
