How to Save the World One Village at a Time ft. Matt Paneitz

How to Save the World One Village at a Time ft. Matt Paneitz

This interview straight up gave me hope. It's been hard recently seeing bad thing after bad thing happening around the world. Sometimes it makes me feel a bit nihilistic.

Speaking with Matt was exactly the change in perspective that I needed. He's truly doing some amazing things with some amazing people and saving a ton of lives along the way.

I hope this interview gives you a bit of optimism as well. Check out Matts links and bio below.

Prior to joining the Peace Corps in 2002, Matthew worked as a 911 Paramedic. After completing the Peace Corps, Matthew founded Long Way Home (LWH). From 2005 to 2008, Matthew led the construction of the first city park in Comalapa, Guatemala. In 2009, Matthew began construction of the Hero School campus. During the construction of the Hero School campus, Matthew assembled a team of local builders and over 4000 volunteers to transform more than 550 tons of repurposed waste (including 35,000 used tires) into the 20-structure campus.

In 2012, while building the campus, Matthew earned a Bachelor's degree in Sustainability. In 2015, while still building the campus, Matthew earned a Master’s degree in Education. He is currently in the dissertation phase of a Doctorate in Education. Matthew combined his experience in campus construction with his efforts in higher education to create the Hero School Education Model. The Hero School Education Model was awarded the UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development in 2023. Matthew also designed the Green Building Workshop, a one-month intensive course in green building, and published the accompanying book, the Green Building Manual. Matthew designed a 4-course undergraduate and graduate-level certificate program in Critical Pedagogy and Sustainability. Matthew is a Fellow in the ASAP (Academics Stand Against Poverty) program at Yale University. Overall, Matthew lived in rural Comalapa, Guatemala, for 20 years.
