LDS Church Announces New Prophet and 1st Presidency - Dallin Oaks, Henry Eyring, Todd Christofferson | Ep. 2071

LDS Church Announces New Prophet and 1st Presidency - Dallin Oaks, Henry Eyring, Todd Christofferson | Ep. 2071

Today, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced a new Prophet and First Presidency. Following the passing of President Russell M. Nelson, senior apostle Dallin H. Oaks has been called as the next Prophet and President of the Church, with Henry B. Eyring and D. Todd Christofferson as his counselors.

In this livestream reaction episode, we discuss the LDS system of prophetic succession (seniority-based), why these counselors choices are both expected AND surprising, who might fill the new vacancy in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the health and age concerns surrounding the new leadership, and reactions to the official Church livestream, press conference and speeches given. We also explore the broader implications of the Church –including generational leadership, LGBTQ issues, and possible future apostolic calls.

Join us as we watch and react live to the LDS announcement of the new First Presidency.

The original broadcast can be viewed here.

Skin of Blackness: The Book of Mormon Curse | LDS Discussions 57 | Ep. 1943

Historically, leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints identified Native Americans as the Lamanites. But as we approach the early 2000s, new theories have emerged. Could the "skin of blackness" refer to paint, tattoos, or dark animal skins? Join us as we unpack these intriguing ideas and their implications for understanding the text. Mormon Apostle Tries to End the Priesthood and Temple Ban | Ep. 1941

Mormon Apostle Tries to End the Priesthood and Temple Ban | Ep. 1941

In the 1960s, Mormon Apostle Hugh B. Brown made significant efforts to lift the priesthood and temple ban for Black members of the church, even speaking with the media about the possibility of change. President Harold B. Lee, however, demanded that Brown stop speaking to the press and removed him from the First Presidency. Lee also forced Brown to sign a statement reaffirming the church’s racist doctrines. Join us with historian Matthew Harris as we explore the impact of Brown’s release, his faith journey, and insights from Harris's book Second Class Saints: Black Mormons and the Struggle for Racial Equality. We are thrilled to announce that we have reached our donation goal to compensate Dr. Matt Harris for his contributions to this series. We sincerely thank everyone who supported this effort. While the goal to pay Matt has been met, producing this series incurred significant costs for the Open Stories Foundation. If you find value in this content and want to help cover these expenses and support future productions, we encourage you to donate at https://www.mormonstories.org/donate/ Your generosity makes a difference—thank you!
