Finding Joy After Mormonism w/ Sharon Beesley | Ep. 2079

Finding Joy After Mormonism w/ Sharon Beesley | Ep. 2079

In this episode of Mormon Stories, John and Margi Dehlin sit down with Sharon Beesley, a therapist, writer and former Mormon “mommy blogger,” to explore the evolution of her faith journey in Mormonism.

Sharon was brought into the church as a child in Florida when her mother chose to convert. She discusses the warmth and community she found in her ward there, and the early testimonies that grounded her. Yet her story also weaves through deep loss with the death of her mother, and how that grief initially drew her closer to the Church.

Sharon attended BYU, got married, and set out to live the ideal Mormon lifestyle. Their family ultimately ended up in New York city, where Sharon began to find relationships with people outside the church. With this move, her worldview began to shift as she encountered new ideas about faith, feminism, and authenticity.

Topics Include:

-Growing up Mormon in Florida

-Coping with grief through faith

-Marriage, motherhood, and mixed-faith relationships

Feminism

This episode offers a gentle, wise, and grounding perspective for anyone navigating faith transitions, loss, or rediscovering joy beyond belief.

Mormon LGBT PURGE? Excommunication of 5 Lesbian Couples | Ep. 1897

Mormon LGBT PURGE? Excommunication of 5 Lesbian Couples | Ep. 1897

Join us today as we discuss the shocking wave of excommunications hitting at least five married lesbian couples in the Mormon Church across the US. These events stand in stark contrast to what we thought was a hopeful shift in welcoming LGBT married couples in the Church. Here are a few questions for the Church: What happened? Is the right to preserve one's membership intact a privilege reserved only for select LGBT Mormons? How is the Church guiding these decisions? Are divine revelations to local leaders influenced by the affluence of their congregations? Is God giving different revelations depending on the level of backlash anticipated from local members? 1895: How Credible Were the Book of Mormon's EIGHT Witnesses? LDS Discussions Ep. 53

Were the 8 witnesses to Joseph Smith's golden plates actually credible? Or just gullible relatives caught up in his delusion? Shockingly candid statements from witnesses like Hiram Page and John Whitmer seem to contradict and undermine official LDS teachings about their testimonies. What are the implications of the past witnesses on today’s modern church? Episode Show Notes YouTube Link _________________________ LDS Discussions is made possible by generous donors! Creating Lasting Sexual Connections - Emily Nagoski’s Come Together | Ep. 1893

From the author of Come as You Are and co-author of Burnout comes an illuminating exploration of how to maintain a happy sex life in a long-term relationship in her new book "Come Together." She advocates removing cultural stigmas around sexuality, openly communicating desires, prioritizing sex as a spiritual practice of connection, and exploring ethical non-monogamy if desired. Countering the notion that sex is a biological need, Nagoski frames it as a journey of vulnerability, presence and continually re-defining mutual pleasure with your partner. My Relief Society Presidency Nightmare - Lori Young | Ep . 1892

My Relief Society Presidency Nightmare - Lori Young | Ep . 1892

In a gripping and vulnerable interview, Lori takes us on her journey of being raised in a picture-perfect Mormon household, only to find herself betrayed by the misogynistic teachings and practices of the Church. As a feminist trapped in a patriarchal system, she recounts the jarring experience of going through the temple for the first time, feeling like she had entered a cult. Despite her discomfort, she persevered for decades, until the cognitive dissonance and oppression of women triggered debilitating panic attacks and a mental health crisis. Lori's courageous story is a testament to the strength it takes to break free from indoctrination, find one's authentic self, and embrace true peace and equality outside the confines of orthodoxy. Her raw honesty about the harmful effects of Mormonism on women's mental health and her path to healing and purpose will resonate deeply with anyone who has struggled to reconcile their beliefs with their lived experience.
