His father passed away from a stroke, and his brother passed away from a heart attack. Growing up, Dr. Mansor was overweight. During his undergrad, Dr. Mansor learned about physiology and metabolism. Plus, during college, Dr. Mansor started to exercise and actually enjoyed exercise for the first time in his life. With all this knowledge, Dr. Mansor realized he could be healthy without worrying about the diseases his family members suffered from.  [10:35] Why Are 88% of American Adults Metabolically Inflexible?  Your nerves have a higher risk of getting damaged when there is a constant increase in elevated glucose in the blood. Your body knows something is wrong with increased glucose, which triggers chronic inflammation. Metabolism is all about balance and moderation.  Every enzyme has a specific temperature range at which it’s optimal.  When you activate inflammation constantly, there are bound to be adverse side effects.  [15:35] Life Is All About Challenges and Growth - Use Trial and Error To Find Your Sweet Spot  Life is all about giving yourself a challenge, adapting, learning, and growing. Next time you face the same challenge, you can tackle it in a much more efficient way.  It can be difficult to find the sweet spot when you are challenging yourself. Dr. Mansor uses a trial and error approach when it comes to knowing his sweet spot while exercising.  Your body will adapt. People want instant change; however, you need to give your body time to change.  [22:40] You Need To Train Your Body To Respond To Certain Conditions Effectively and Optimally  Metabolic inflexibility is your body’s inability to switch from burning glucose to burning fat. When there is dysfunction, there is bound to be a deficiency, and there is bound to be wasted energy. Everyone thinks cortisol is the bad guy; however, you need cortisol to function.  The goal is not to shut down whatever is related to chronic disease. Instead, you want to train your body to respond to specific conditions effectively and optimally.  [30:20] Exogenous Ketones Are a Source of Energy and Can Help Lower Your Hunger Hormones Ketones are fuel for you to create energy.  There are still calories with exogenous ketones.  You won't lose weight if you have too many calories and are not exercising.  Ghrelin is the hunger hormone. Ketones can help lower that hunger hormone. [36:05] Exogenous Ketones Are Useful For Getting Back Into Ketosis  If you are following a ketogenic diet, you may not need exogenous ketones. However, do you have a hard time getting back into ketosis? If you fall out of ketosis, exogenous ketones can be a helpful way for you to get back into ketosis. Exogenous ketones are also a great tool to use before exercising.  [43:20] The Brain Doesn’t Metabolize Glucose As Efficiently After A Traumatic Brain Injury  Dr. Mansor researched how ketones can be a therapeutic intervention to treat traumatic brain injury. Within 48 hours, studies show hypermetabolism of glucose after trauma.  Some researchers think the body wants glucose for energy to repair.  Ketones can help give the brain another option to produce energy.  For some reason, the brain doesn't metabolize glucose as efficiently after a traumatic brain injury.  [55:55] Ketone-IQ Is A Useful Biohack To Improve Your Sleep and Recover Faster  A dose of ketones after a workout and a dose of ketones before sleep can be helpful for recovery.  Plus, ketones before sleep can improve sleep quality.  Ketone-IQ has been proven to support energy, focus, and endurance. The whole goal is to get Food Lies on Netflix.  Food Lies is all about the sordid history of our dietary guidelines, what we should be eating, and how to do it sustainably.  [15:20] Are Cows Really Causing The Climate Crisis?  There's always been methane coming from ruminant animals. Methane from animals is part of the natural system.  There’s a huge diversion going on. 95% of emission problems are from other industries.  The fossil fuel industry extracts carbon from deep into the ground.  Big industry is controlling the narrative around methane and cows.  [23:30] All Animals Require Protein: What Happens When You’re Not Getting Enough Building Blocks  All animals acquire food to get a certain amount of protein. If animals don’t have enough protein in their food, they have to eat more food to get enough protein. The protein of the population has dropped dramatically. When you drop protein, you have to eat more calories as a result.  Protein isn’t the answer for everything; you also have to consider nutrient density. [31:30] How Much Protein Should You Be Eating Every Single Day?  Eat a gram per pound of body weight or lean body mass. There isn’t a downside to eating this much protein.  If you have a severe kidney problem, there’s a chance you’ll have issues with too much protein.  You’ll have a problem if you’re eating high protein and highly processed foods.  If your ideal weight is 130 pounds, consume 130 grams of protein.  [37:10] Does Eating Red Meat Cause Cancer? No, The Problem Is Processed Foods  Why is there a worldwide agenda against meat? Epidemiology can't show causation; it can only show correlation.  A famous study says that red meat causes cancer. However, it has a lot more to do with eating processed foods with processed meats. If you’re eating a hot dog, you’re eating a bun. If you’re eating a steak, you’re probably not eating a bun.  [40:45] Processed Food Companies Are Behind The Vegan Agenda  A massive conglomeration of worldwide processed food companies is pushing the vegan agenda.  The countries that eat little meat have 30-40% child malnutrition and stunted growth.  There’s barely any profit margin in milk, eggs, fish, and fresh foods. [04:07] Different Types of Eczema and How They Differ from Each Other -       Eczema or atopic dermatitis is just rashy skin and often has a component of overgrowth of staph aureus on the skin. -       There are three types of priorities of eczema and how they appear. -       Gut-mediated eczema is usually going to look bright red. If it's circular, it is probably always gut mediated. And it's going to look worse in the summer. -       Antihistamines and histamines aren't enemies but are almost always a problem in most eczema cases. -       Histamine should be broken down better when you have good gut bacteria. [10:06] Are You Digesting Properly? Things You Should Know About Digesting -       No one is digesting because we suppress all our digestive enzymes, stomach acid, and pancreatic enzyme functions under stress. -        Undigested stuff creates chaos in the immune system. And then it informs the immune system that there's a problem, which can lead you to have food sensitivities. -       If you do not have a banana bowel movement every morning, you're probably not digesting beautifully. [28:11] Improving Gut Microbiome: Tools That Can Help To Strengthen Your Gut -       Prebiotics are supposed to feed good bacteria. But most clinicians at practice would tell you they are good and bad, depending on the prebiotics. -       Saccharomyces boulardii can pass the stomach acid spores and typically can have some bacteria-shifting properties. Still, they're probably not enough when you have H. Pylori or other certain bacteria that need a certain potential treatment. -       Short-chain fatty acids are up-regulating ketosis. -       If you're trying to support your gut health, improve your digestion first. -       Doing diaphragmatic breathing pumps your lymphatics, which improves your digestion. -       When doing deep breathing, you increase ATP turnover by 15 times. Plus, she has additional training to be board certified in geriatrics.  Dr. Nolte would see people in their sixties who were acting like they were eighty.  The care and services that Dr. Nolte would provide seemed like it was too little and too late.  Insulin resistance is at the core of all the conditions that Dr. Nolte treats. The longer you hold off making those lifestyle changes, the harder it will be to get healthier.  The longer we continue to make poor decisions, the easier those decisions are to maintain. [10:15] The Role of Insulin In Health and Disease  Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas. It is a good thing and a vital hormone.  Insulin is an anabolic hormone, meaning its role is to build things up. Insulin’s role is to move blood sugar, or blood glucose from your bloodstream, into your cells to be either used as energy right away or to be stored in the form of muscle glycogen, liver glycogen, adipose tissue, or fat tissue. Exercise will reduce blood sugar. You shouldn’t focus on calories. Instead, you should focus on blood sugar for weight loss.  When insulin continues to go up, your cells will become resistant to that insulin. Eventually, you will start to see blood sugars go up.  Remember, 88% of adults have insulin resistance. If you learn how to live a low insulin lifestyle, you’ll lose weight and prevent disease.  [22:50] Your Metabolism Will Slow Down With Chronic Caloric Restriction  A fascinating study showed chronic caloric restriction slows your metabolism for six months to four years. How is It Different from Menopause?  -       Based on research, 20% of women don't know what stage they're in. -       Perimenopause is the years before menopause. Depending on the individual, it can last anywhere from a couple of months to years. -       Menopause is once you've gone 365 days or 12 months without a cycle. -       Everything after menopause, which is technically that one day is considered to be post-menopause. -       There are over 100 different symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. Fatigue, brain fog, sleep issues, memory loss, and anxiety are the most common symptoms.  [16:05] Supporting Your Adrenal Glands Is Important, but How?  -       When the ovaries are gone, the adrenal glands replace them, so nourishing them is important. -       Managing stress and cortisol levels is the number one way to support your adrenal glands. -       Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption. -       Just be mindful of what you put in and on your bodies.  [28:11] Food and Nutrition: What You Should Eat and Should Not Eat  -       Focus on eating enough protein, and avoid carbohydrates. -       Eat vegetables and lower glycemic fruits like berries. -       Ensure you eat good quality oils instead of seed oils such as canola, corn, cottonseed, safflower, sunflower, soy, and grape seed. -       Stay hydrated. Drink water, decaf tea, or soup.  [35:53] What Are The Acceptable Substitutes for Artificial Sweeteners?  -       Stevia, monk fruit, and erythritol are good replacement for artificial sweeteners. -       Even using good sugar replacement, make sure to balance everything in moderation. -       High fructose corn syrup, trans fat, monosodium glutamate, artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, artificial colors, and certain preservatives are the things you want to avoid.  [42:06] Are You Taking Supplements? Kevin was devastated about his diagnosis.  At the time, Kevin had gut health issues, poor energy, wasn’t sleeping well, and had high stress.  So, Kevin knew he had to address everything to fix his health. Finally, Kevin got the right plan for his health and bones.  [06:10] The Answer To Your Health Problems Won’t Come From The Pharmacy  Kevin always thought that the answer to his health problems would come from a pharmacy or a doctor.  Throughout his life, Kevin took sleeping pills, antidepressants, antibiotics, and countless other medications to help address the signs and symptoms of his condition.  However, he never really received a complete resolution of those issues because he was just covering up the cause. Kevin just wanted to divest himself from thinking that the solution to his health was in a pill.  [09:20] The Importance of Gut Health For Your Overall Health Your body and your bones are like plants. To grow, they need nutrients and the right conditions. Most people focus on nutrients like salads and smoothies. They’re not considering the soil. Our gut is like the soil; it is where we absorb almost everything.  To absorb anything, you need roots in your soil.  Our roots are called villi. They're these tiny little hairlike projections that cover our small intestine. The villi will shuttle nutrients into your bloodstream so they can travel where they are needed in your body.  When you have poor digestion, you won’t be able to break down food properly.  [13:45] Gut Health: Testing Your Stomach Acid and Other Options  First, figure out where your stomach acid is; there are a few different tests that you can do.  If you have low stomach acid, you can supplement with betaine HCl. You could also use some digestive enzymes to help break down your food.  You need a digestive stool test to understand what is going on inside your microbiome.  Then, you will work with a practitioner to build a protocol.  Check out Gut Zoomer: https://www.vibrant-wellness.com/tests/gut-zoomer/ [15:50] Do I Have To Stop Drinking Coffee If I Have Gut Issues? Do I have to stop drinking coffee? The answer is no. The big concern is caffeine when it comes to coffee. Caffeine is going to vary slightly to increase calcium excretion. Most people don’t need to avoid coffee. Instead, drink less.  If you've got caffeine intakes greater than 300 milligrams a day, calcium excreted in the urine will increase.  [17:30] When Should I Get My First Bone Density Scan?  The earlier, the better when it comes to getting your first bone density scan.  Around 30 or 40 would be an excellent time to get your first scan. Get a scan now so you can understand where you are at. Maybe you will find out something that you can start addressing now. You can build bone strength at any age. It just gets more challenging as you get older.  [22:30] Finding A Functional Medicine Practitioner For Postmenopausal Women Primary osteoporosis is typically related to the decrease in estrogen in postmenopausal women. When estrogen levels decrease as they do during menopause, it's going to cause an increase in the activity level of cells that break down bone.  You need to have conversations with a functional medicine practitioner or a naturopathic physician to determine if hormones will be right for you.  Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy could be the right choice.  [28:00] Spinach and Kale Could Be Causing Digestive Problems  Oxalates are an antinutrient. Antinutrients can cause problems for people who have digestive issues. People eat a lot of spinach. If you can’t break down the oxalates, you will have some issues.  Instead, you should eat arugula; it is super low in oxalates.  [30:10] Why Kevin Is A Massive Fan of Coconut Oil Coconut oil is good for energy, weight, brain function, heart health, memory, skin, hair, and teeth.  Coconut oil can be helpful in the protection against bone loss. Plus, it’s great because it is full of MCT; they go straight to the liver. Lastly, coconut oil has antimicrobial effects.   [37:40] The Importance of Having A Strategy When It Comes To Bone Health If you rely on a single supplement, you may lose more bone because you didn’t have a strategy. Kevin will develop a strategy that addresses root cause issues.
