Shawn ended up getting really into supplements. He would take supplements, work out and see all these changes in his body. Eventually, Shawn realized he needs to chase his dreams of being a formulator and working with athletes. So, Shawn told his counselor about his new dreams – he laughed at Shawn. Later that night, Shawn almost committed suicide because his dreams had been totally crushed. Eventually, Shawn got into his dream school and pursued his goals despite what his counselor told him. During this work, Shawn’s autoimmune system exploded; he had loads of issues. However, Shawn found keto, and it changed his life forever. [16:15] Common Mistakes That People Make When Trying Keto A lot of people try dirty keto by drinking diet sodas and using artificial sweeteners. Making your own keto desserts is another mistake. Also, many people think they can eat out and still eat keto. Shawn says he would try and eat Burger King while following the keto diet. Eating too much protein can be a mistake for people. Instead, think about eating more fat. That way, you feel full faster. The higher your ketones get, the more you will struggle to eat. If women can’t get into ketosis, Shawn says to try a period of strict keto. Down the road, you can play with net carbs. At 25, Jack had high blood pressure, mood swings, and trouble sleeping.  So, Jack quit his Adderall cold turkey and started drinking coffee.  Eventually, Jack found mushrooms like lion’s mane and chaga were optimal for productivity and stress. Also, fasting is free and time-efficient. The whole world can do fasting; they just need to learn what it’s about. Fasting is this healing response that the world is catching on to now because it's as powerful a healing tool as sleep. Every religion disagrees on everything except fasting. Overall, fasting transforms people physically, spiritually, and emotionally.  The Importance of Having A Balance Between Feasting and Fasting  People need to understand that symptoms should be read and acknowledged. Women have three primary sex hormones that drive their behaviors, sleep, and mental state. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone need vastly different things. Fasting is a tool that should be used with proper feasting; you should be able to go in and out of ketosis. When feasting, remember to eat based on the season. No healthy culture ever stays on the same diet because they can't. Our genes and our microbiome are set up to change diets, whether it be weekly, monthly, or seasonally.  What Are The Health Benefits of Ketosis?  Your brain gets so many benefits from ketosis. Almost two-thirds of the population are experiencing cognitive decline. Your brain loves ketones. For decades, people have been put on a keto diet to fix neurodegenerative diseases. Ketones are a tool for regenerating the brain. With fasting and ketosis, you hit therapeutic levels that you can't hit, just being in ketosis. Your brain needs these ketones to heal. Plus, ketosis will change the microbiome and increase diversity. Lastly, ketosis will help turn off bad genes due to stressful living.  How Important Is Gratitude?  The most crucial fasting tool is gratitude. Every time you say thank you to someone, you are releasing oxytocin which brings down cortisol. When cortisol comes down, insulin is easier to regulate, and your sex hormones will be a piece of cake. If you don’t fix the cell, you won’t get well. Gratitude will decrease cellular inflammation. When your inflammation is reduced, your cellular function will increase, which will help you feel good. No, pregnant women should not practice intermittent fasting. If you’re throwing up and you can’t eat, then in some sense, you are fasting. However, your number one priority should be nutrition. Find food that you don’t throw up. There are other tools that you can magnify once you are pregnant. For instance, you will pass down your microbiome to your child. So, you need to understand what supports a healthy microbiome. Pregnancy is an excellent time for fermented foods. Also, keep in mind what you are putting on your skin; make sure all your products are very clean. Overall, there are tons to unpack for the pregnant woman to have a healthy pregnancy, and fasting is not the tool you want to be leaning into. How Often Should You Check Your Ketone Levels? Ben doesn’t check his ketone levels because he has been doing keto since 2013. So, he knows when he is in ketosis vs. when he’s not in ketosis. When you’re starting keto, it can be a valuable tool to know whether or not you are genuinely in ketosis. Many people will test their urine because it is the cheapest option; however, urine testing is not the best. When your cells use ketones, they will not spill out in your urine. While on the other hand, breath meters are hit or miss. Ben recommends Biosense if you are interested in testing your ketones through breath. https://mybiosense.com/ All in all, a blood ketone test will give you glucose and ketones levels. If you’re 0.5 or higher, then you are in ketosis. Test your ketones for a month or two. Eventually, you won’t need to test anymore.    Keto vs. Carnivore: Which Diet Is Best For You?    Carnivore is technically keto because when you’re doing carnivore, you are in ketosis. Both diets are good options, but Ben says to try keto first. Keto is low carb, but it’s not zero carbs like a carnivore diet. If you go from 150 grams of carbs to zero, that’s going to feel challenging. However, going from keto to carnivore isn’t as challenging for you. Many people have naturally started carnivore diets because they plateaued on keto. Carnivore can be a great natural transition to try something new and change things up for your body. We don’t need motivation; instead, we need momentum. All in all, carnivore can be an accessible version of keto if you want something simple to do. Intermittent Fasting: Is It Safe For Your Children?  Fasting isn't a fad; fasting is a primal way our body approaches food. Children live in a human body and have the same primal need to go through periods without food. Sadly, we beat that sense out of them. We tell kids to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then, they aren't allowed to eat after dinner. Dr. Mindy says to watch the natural rhythms of your children's hunger levels. Do they wake up happy, or do they wake up crazy hungry? If they're happy, you can easily go an hour or two before feeding them. Make sure you are learning their natural rhythms. We need to tap into our children's natural time-restricted eating. Overall, don't push food on them when they may not be hungry.  Should You Do Keto If You Don’t Have A Gallbladder? Gallbladder removal surgery is one of the top surgeries in the United States. Many people think that the gallbladder is what produces bile to break down fat and detoxify. In reality, the gallbladder is more of a storage house for the bile. The liver produces bile. Bile is a beautiful green substance that helps you break down fat and detoxify. If you don’t have a gallbladder and you start to do keto, the liver needs to make up for the absence of the gallbladder. If your liver can’t keep up with the fat, that’s where issues will occur. You may experience diarrhea and stomach issues. So, you must go low and slow and eat small and frequent meals. Who Can You Trust When It Comes To Experts In The Health Space?  If the person we're seeking to learn from uses derogatory language when speaking about those with whom they disagree, that is the sign of a petty person. Experts should have discussions politely and respectfully and acknowledge that there is room for disagreement. There ought to be a degree of skepticism that we apply to every authority. We should challenge that authority to some degree. There are people with Ph.D. degrees who we shouldn’t trust. Overall, we should always be on our own journey to understand what is accurate and true.  A Basic Understanding of Ketosis  Ketosis is the state where blood ketones are elevated, but pH is normal. Every human has some amount of ketones, even if it's below the detection level on commonly used devices. When you’re in ketosis, you will have a detectable level of ketones on a moderately used device and yet pH is not changing. Ketones have the potential to make the body more acidic. When someone's in ketosis, the amount of hydrogens coming off the ketone is relatively modest. Within the blood, there are numerous buffering mechanisms. That way, your body will defend its pH range. Plus, ketones are signaling molecules. If a ketone is being used as a fuel, it will come to a cell. Then the ketone will get shuttled into the cell through an MCT (monocarboxylate transporter). When the mitochondria have a lot of pressure to be burning molecules, they get the signal that they need more mitochondria. Fatty acids can have the same effect. When a cell is burning a lot of fatty acids for fuel, it will start stimulating mitochondrial biogenesis.  Why The Laws of Thermodynamics Are Misleading Regarding Weight Loss People are producing ketones and breathing out ketones, and urinating them out. Remember, ketones have a caloric value. Calories matter, but don’t worry about them. Let the calories take care of themselves. Invoking the laws of thermodynamics in nutrition and human metabolism was one of the greatest tragedies in the history of human-relevant science. It absolutely misled us and made us demonize fat and embrace carbohydrates. Hormones matter at least as much as calories because hormones tell the body's cells what to do with the available calories.  The Problems With Metabolic Syndrome and Insulin Resistance  Metabolic syndrome used to be called insulin resistance syndrome. Insulin resistance is the single most common problem in the US and abroad. Plus, insulin resistance is relevant to virtually every chronic disease. Covid has only made metabolic problems worse. Luckily, keto and intermittent fasting can help lower insulin. Remember, there is no insulin resistance without elevated insulin. Lowering insulin is a perfect way to help the body become more sensitive to it. If no nutrients are coming into the blood, insulin starts running out of nutrients in the blood that it can store away. So, insulin comes down when nutrients aren’t coming into the blood. If you are not getting the desired results, you may want to test your genes.  When you know what genes you have, you can empower what you are doing in your lifestyle.  [15:55] Time-Restricted Eating: Try Reducing Your Feeding Window For Weight Loss Results  You should be done eating by 7 pm each night. The earlier you eat, the more insulin sensitive you become, the better your metabolic health markers, and the more weight you lose.  If you struggle to lose weight, try eating breakfast and cutting your feeding window at 3 pm.  When you are stuck, pivoting your mealtime will be essential to get the desired results.  [30:20] The Top Three Keto Meal Plans That Can Work For You  Kristina recommends a Mediterranean-style keto diet with a focus on fish, olive oil, and lean protein, with some sheep and goat dairy.  The Mediterranean-style diet works best for people who have APOE variants.  Another keto diet that works well is paleo.  The paleo diet includes red meat, no dairy, a lot of eggs, bacon, squash, and sweet potatoes.  Lastly, a carnivore diet can work for you. This diet includes a lot of fatty protein!  [34:40] What You Need To Know About Genetic Nutrition Testing  The test is $360. Your kit will come to your house, and you will provide a sample of saliva. Then, mail the kit back, and you will have results in about a month.  Unfortunately, knowing what to do with the report is challenging once you have it. For instance, your sleep will affect your caloric expenditure.  Also, gut health and mitochondrial health will change your caloric expenditure. The body is complex, beautiful, and intricate - counting calories doesn’t take that into consideration.  The most important thing to remember is to eat real foods instead of processed foods.  [43:00] Many People Don’t Even Know That They Are In Ketosis  Many very lean people out there are inadvertently in ketosis and then just have no idea. Lean people will bash the keto lifestyle without knowing whether they are in ketosis or not.
