#32 - Richard Davies - Abandon Ship Glasgow

#32 - Richard Davies - Abandon Ship Glasgow

Richard Davies is an entrepreneur and artist. He is known for Abandon Ship Apparel company and Abandon Ship bars. It was fantastic to be back recording in real life in a studio which allowed for the intimacy this podcast deserved. Abandon Ship Apparel was founded in 2011 in a bedroom in Glasgow with £300, a web domain and a passion for making art. Within 3 years, Abandon Ship Apparel saw itself in high street windows grossing over £1.2 million in annual sales revenue through channels such as ASOS, Topman and Foot Asylum. In 2015, Abandon Ship Apparel entered liquidation and Richard used his own money to buy back the rights to the brand he had spent almost 5 years growing from the ground up to rebuild. Fast forward 6 years, Richard, and a team he is proud of, have expanded the apparel brand beyond t-shirts. He has opened the Abandon Ship bars in Dundee and Glasgow which have become WILDLY popular especially for it's unmissable facade and insane artwork (I have visited weekly!). Abandon Ship in Covent Garden, London is opening in a month’s time as part of the plan to expand the bar across 10 locations in the UK. Richard speaks candidly about: - His upbringing and his rebellion against traditional education - A life changing moment that changed his mental model and direction - The highlights and lowlights of owning a rapidly growing apparel brand - Stories from travelling to tradeshows across the world (including closing a £10,000+ of apparel deal after partying all night) - The long-lasting effects of liquidation on the psyche of an entrepreneur - The inspiration and methodology behind the renowned Abandon Ship Bar ceiling artwork - His definition of healthy and toxic masculinity - His reflection on his first 35 years on earth that he defines as “his training years” Thanks, Rich, for stopping by and looking forward to round 2!

#30 - David McIntosh - Guest on the University, Challenged Podcast

#30 - David McIntosh - Guest on the University, Challenged Podcast

This weeks episode is my appearance on the University Challenged Podcast with Toni Kent. Here's what it this episode is about.. ---- Would you know what to say if you found yourself on a Zoom call with Her Majesty the Queen in your early 20s? David McIntosh did. As Scotland's first ever Management Consulting apprentice at KPMG, and the Co-Chair of the firm's UK Social Mobility network, David's life story so far makes for powerful listening. So much so, he was chosen to speak with Her Majesty as part of the firm's 150th anniversary celebrations. In our conversation, David explains how growing up in receipt of free school meals and with uniform and holidays provided by veteran's charities empowered him to 'flip his DNA' and embark on a quest to become an accountant. He also shares how the work of the Social Mobility Foundation opened up access to opportunities that may otherwise not have been visible or available to him and the impact this had in setting his trajectory towards management consulting aligned with public service. We talk poverty, using humour to deflect attention and how counting coppers as a child can be a clue to a future career. There's also lots to take away on the value of being unconventional and the power of having a North Star. --- Check out out the University, Challenged podcast here: https://open.spotify.com/show/2jF3Z2j5QcjWyArN0nU3cS?si=a9a3a1bb8c52432c

#29 - Jay McFarlane – Caribbean Orphanage to Madison Square Garden: Boxing is Saving my Life

Jay is a heavyweight boxer who has won the Scottish Cruiserweight title and was the youngest boxer to fight at Madison Square Gardens. This podcast is the most explosive, intimate, and intense podcast I have ever listened to never mind recorded. And, we recorded in in real life in a studio! Jay opens about his Mum being caught up in a drug smuggling operation whilst on holiday which ultimately led to him, and his 6-year-old autistic brother being homed in a Caribbean orphanage. He speaks intimately about how this event, and growing up in a deprived area, has propelled his boxing journey which he navigates the “jay way”. Jay talks about what it was like fighting kids twice his age when he weighed almost 80kg at the age of 8. He opens about the career prospects of professional boxing and speaks transparently about the money in boxing. He speaks about his highlights which include dropping almost 35kg to make cruiserweight to win the Scottish Cruiserweight Title. He also speaks very candidly of his experience with suicidal tendencies, mental health, alcoholism. Thanks, Jay, for stopping by and being so open and candid. ----- Some of the stories told by Jay can be interpreted as sensitive and therefore viewer and listener discretion is advised. The stories and topics discussed do not reflect me or the opinions of my employer. ---- This podcast was edited and produced by Paul Shields @RebelCityPaul and was shot in the @RebelCityPodcast Studio.
