U.S. Olympian Cory McGee On The Mindset Shift From Making U.S. Teams To Contending On The World Stage + 'The Emma Coburn Effect', Explained
“I do enjoy watching other 1500m runners who have done other special things over the years and trying to learn from that – not necessarily copy it but learn to emulate the patience. That’s sometimes challenging. It’s a lot of instinct. I had race instinct before but I didn’t have fitness. How I raced at USAs is not that abnormal in how I went about the race but now I have the fitness to finish it.” The guest for this episode is U.S. Olympian and New Balance 1500m specialist Cory McGee. She and I go way back to when I first started covering the sport and I’m stunned it’s taken me this long to get her on. I was with her when she made the U.S. team for the 2013 World Championships but needed to hit the qualifying time. I watched it happen in Europe that summer and it’s been so cool to see her not just stick with the sport through some rough patches but figure out how to breakthrough and make teams again. She qualified for last year’s Tokyo Olympics and fulfilled a lifelong dream. This year, she backed it up by making the 1500m team for the World Championships. She’s got a personal best of 4:00 for the 1500 meters and 1:59 for 800 meters. You’ll hear how her mindset has changed to cement the fact that she belongs in the Team USA kit and is ready to contend against the world’s best. Plus, we also chat about this thought I’ve had after USAs on how Emma Coburn’s experience, mentorship and skill set helps the women around her on Team Boss. SUPPORT THE SPONSORS GARMIN: Music. Quanesha Burks On Her Journey From Working At McDonald's To The Olympics + Thinking About Medals At World Championships
"It's time. I've made teams – a lot of teams. I've been making teams since my sophomore year of college...Now, it's time to get medals. Now, it's time to go into competitions and leave with hardware. That's where my mindset is now. I know I'm capable of doing it." Quanesha Burks is the 2022 indoor and outdoor U.S. women’s long jump champion and a 2021 Olympian. At the U.S. Championships, she jumped a personal best of 7.06 meters (That’s 23 feet, 2 inches). Heading into the World Championships in a week, she is ranked No. 7 in the world and the top American in the event. She is one of the most positive people I’ve had the chance to meet within the past year. As you’ll hear in this episode, she’s always had to work hard to make a name for herself and care for those she loved. Last summer, I wrote a story for Sports Illustrated on her since she put out a tweet about how she started at Mcdonald's and now made it to The Olympics. Through it all, she’s continued to showcase her personality and humor with now more than 65,000 followers on Instagram and 46,000 followers on TikTok. Track Snacks: Karsten Warholm (400m Hurdles Olympic Gold Medalist, World Record Holder) | 2 Weeks Until World Championships!
Happy Friday! This is the 11th edition of Track Snacks – a mini-series taking you into the weekend where Chris Chavez and a CITIUS MAG staffer or friend share the story of an athlete who they're excited about right now that you can expect to see compete at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 (July 15–24, 2022). For this episode, we're joined by Katelyn Hutchison to discuss the dominance of Karsten Warholm. He is the two-time World 400m hurdles champion and Olympic champion from Norway. 2021 was the best season of his career as he twice broke the world record of 46.78 held by USA's Kevin Young since 1992. Warholm ran 46.70 to break it on July 1 and then ran one of the best races in history with a 45.94 in the final at the Tokyo Games. We discuss his road to greatness and how it all started with the multi-events at a young age in Norway. Track Snacks is presented by Hayward Magic. Everyone knows how much all of us in the CITIUS MAG family love track & field, and how much we enjoy sharing that love with you all. Well, we’ve got a few big love-sharing ideas in the works and it all takes place in Eugene, Oregon this summer. Hayward Field will be the home to the Prefontaine Classic, the USATF Outdoor Championships and the World Athletics Championships. We'll be there and you should be too. World Champion, Olympic Silver Medalist Grant Holloway On The Work He's Put In To Become Great, Chasing World Records | Out of The Blocks with Jasmine Todd & Katelyn Hutchison
Grant Holloway is the reigning world champion, Olympic silver medalist and second-fastest man in history for the 110m hurdles. He is a professional hurdler for adidas running and we recorded this from the adidas hospitality suite in Eugene, Oregon last weekend at the USATF Outdoor Championships. He’s one of the most fun personalities in the sport and I’m sure you’ll have some laughs in this episode because it’s hosted by Jasmine Todd and Katelyn Hutchison. They host the Out of The Blocks podcast within the CITIUS MAG Podcast network. They were two breakout stars this weekend in the mixed zone. They are both part of the Magic Boost Program aimed at improving the diversity within the people covering the sport and it was so amazing to see athletes open up to them and express themselves in different ways from some of the more traditional media. They bring out some of the best in athletes in ways others can’t. You can watch the full episode on the CITIUS MAG YouTube channel but also catch the conversation in podcast form on Spotify and Apple Podcasts by searching 'Out of The Blocks with Jasmine Todd and Katelyn Hutchison'.
