Why Healthcare Policy Needs To Focus On Prevention with Dr. Anand Parekh

Why Healthcare Policy Needs To Focus On Prevention with Dr. Anand Parekh

We have the best hospitals, most highly trained doctors, and people come from all over the world to get medical treatments in the US. Yet, we’re lagging behind almost every other country in health metrics, including life expectancy and infant mortality. That’s because we’re not being set up for success: The policies and systems we rely on for healthcare aren’t supporting prevention, education, and accessibility for all our communities. We are spending a massive amount of money on healthcare (1 of every 5 federal dollars) but we’re not spending on the social services to invest in lifestyle wellness that prevents disease in the first place.  This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sit down with Dr. Anand Parekh to talk about solutions to our country’s healthcare crisis and examine what’s already working. Dr. Parekh is the Bipartisan Policy Center’s (BPC) chief medical advisor, providing clinical and public health expertise across the organization, particularly in the areas of aging, prevention, and global health. Prior to joining BPC, he completed a decade of service at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). As a HHS deputy assistant secretary for health from 2008 to 2015, he developed and implemented national initiatives focused on prevention, wellness, and care management. He has spoken widely and written extensively on a variety of health topics and is the author of a new book entitled Prevention First – Policymaking for a Healthier America. This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market. Thrive Market has made it so easy for me to stay healthy, even with my intense travel schedule. Not only does Thrive offer 25 to 50% off all of my favorite brands, but they also give back. Here are more of the details from our interview:  -Why life expectancy and other health metrics are so poor in the United States (5:09) -Why policymakers do not focus on prevention and proactive policies to improve health (13:21) -Personal responsibility in a toxic health environment (19:24) -Challenges with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or our food stamp system (21:06) -Social needs vs social determinants of health (28:12) -Obesity: the public health crisis of our century (31:46) -Dr. Parekh’s 5 key takeaways for policymakers (38:48) -Targeting and creating pathways for existing healthcare programs and interventions that have been shown effective (47:02) -Why the government is so important in scaling healthcare solutions (52:04) -The need for clinical-community linkages (52:31) Find Dr. Parekh’s book, Prevention First: Policymaking for a Healthier America here.   Check out the work being done by at the Bipartisan Policy Center here.

Is There An Antidote To Stress? with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee

Is There An Antidote To Stress? with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee

We’re up against a chronic epidemic: stress. In fact, it’s estimated that 80% or more of doctors’ visits are due to illnesses related to stress. This can come in many different forms. Socioeconomic stress is a real burden for many people, as is the stress of taking care of several generations within a family, or meeting the demands of our jobs. Stress can also come in the form of bad food and poor or inadequate sleep, which send negative signals to the brain that produce stress hormones. That doesn’t mean we’re stuck with stress though. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m joined by my good friend Dr. Rangan Chatterjee to look at the many sides of stress and all the actions we can take to stop it in its tracks.  Dr. Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential doctors in the UK and wants to change how medicine will be practiced for years to come. He hosts the biggest health podcast in Europe, Feel Better, Live More, which Apple has announced as one of the most downloaded new podcasts of the past year. His first book, How to Make Disease Disappear, is an international bestseller all over the world and has sold over 250,000 copies worldwide in just 18 months. His most recent book, the #1 bestseller, The Stress Solution, tackles what the WHO calls the health epidemic of our time—stress. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Joovv. ButcherBox is currently offering listeners of the podcast 2 lbs of wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon PLUS $20 off your first box. Just go to ButcherBox.com/farmacy to take advantage of this great deal. Check out the Joovv products at joovv.com/farmacy. How Much Is Your Food Waste Costing You?

How Much Is Your Food Waste Costing You?

Food waste is one of the largest problems of our time. In fact, about 30% of all food produced globally (1.3 billion tons) is wasted—and it’s costing us. Food waste is also a major contributor to climate change; if food waste was represented as its own country it would be the third-largest greenhouse gas emitter! In this minisode, Dr. Hyman dives into this topic and what we can do about it in our own homes with Kavita Shukla and Paul Hawken. Kavita Shukla is the Founder and CEO of The FRESHGLOW Co. and the inventor of FreshPaper, a simple innovation taking on the massive global challenge of food waste by keeping food fresher, longer. FreshPaper is used by farmers and families across the globe, and The FRESHGLOW Co. has partnered with some of the largest retailers in the world, from Whole Foods to Walmart so that people everywhere can take advantage of this incredible product and the goodness of real food. Paul Hawken is an environmentalist, entrepreneur, author, and activist who has dedicated his life to environmental sustainability and changing the relationship between business and the environment. He is Executive Director of Project Drawdown, a non-profit dedicated to researching when and how global warming can be reversed. His book, Drawdown, outlines the most comprehensive plan to reverse global warming. Understanding Nutrition Research

Understanding Nutrition Research

We’re always hearing extreme results from nutritional research. Ranging from the “dangers” of coconut oil and eggs to completely contradictory statements, like that a low-carb diet shortens lifespan and also increases it, we are bombarded with confusing information that can make deciding what to eat totally overwhelming. But with the right knowledge and resources, we can learn to decipher dietary studies to get the real truth. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Chris Kresser, an expert in Functional Medicine and a leader in nutritional research, to dissect what you need to evaluate to understand nutrition research. Chris Kresser M.S., L.Ac is the co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine, founder of Kresser Institute, creator of ChrisKresser.com, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Cure and Unconventional Medicine. He is one of the most respected clinicians and educators in the fields of Functional Medicine and ancestral health and has trained over 1,500 clinicians and health coaches in his unique approach. The Power Of Food To Heal Everything From Autoimmune Disease To Traumatic Brain Injury with Dr. George Papanicolaou

The Power Of Food To Heal Everything From Autoimmune Disease To Traumatic Brain Injury with Dr. George Papanicolaou

One of the reasons Functional Medicine is so transformative is that it recognizes disease does not occur in isolation. If one part of the body is compromised the entire body is thrown out of balance. SIBO, or small intestine bacterial overgrowth, is a great example of this. It rarely occurs on its own, and is often paired with a number of other issues, from neurological symptoms to migraines, arthritis, and more. When we focus on healing the gut in these instances, the entire body shifts for the better. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I’m joined by Dr. George Papanicolaou to talk about the Functional Medicine matrix as a framework for healing, as well as his own journey in overcoming a traumatic brain injury.  Dr. Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. In August 2017, I invited Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center and we’ve been successfully helping people together ever since.  This episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is brought to you by ButcherBox. Now through December 31, 2019, ButcherBox is offering listeners of the podcast 2 lbs of wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon and 4 grass-fed, grass-finished sirloin steaks for free in your first order PLUS $20 off your first box. Just go to ButcherBox.com/farmacy to take advantage of this great deal. Here are more of the details from our interview:  -The 4 principles of osteopathic medicine and what attracted Dr. Papanicolaou to become a DO before he discovered Functional Medicine (6:05) -Why prevention, as thought about it in conventional medicine, is really early detection (11:29) -Treating SIBO and how the Functional Medicine Matrix is used to identify issues and create health (17:19) -Leaky gut, why SIBO is rarely seen in patients by itself, and how to test for it (27:09) -Patient cases in which Dr. Papanicolaou and I have treated gut issues (32:40) -The reason why people get so-called “food babies” (36:29) -The 5 R’s of Functional Medicine (40:10) -Why Functional Medicine uses genetic and toxicity testing not regularly used in conventional medicine (48:33) -Gluten as the trigger for autoimmune disease, how sugar and starch can cause hormonal issues, and Dr. Papanicolaou’s experience treating his teenage daughter’s fatigue (1:00:34) -Dr. Papanicolaou’s personal experience with brain injury and how he healed himself (1:09:24) Learn more about working with Dr. George Papanicolaou at The UltraWellness Center at https://www.ultrawellnesscenter.com/team-member/george-papanicolaou/.
