Why Your Brain Only Notices What's Wrong and How to Retrain It

Ten things happen in a day. Nine of them are fine. One goes badly. And at 11pm, lying in bed, which one is your brain replaying? The bad one. Always the bad one. You could have a genuinely good day and your brain will find the one moment that wasn't right and chew on it for hours.

That's negativity bias. Your brain is wired to scan for threats, problems, and danger. It prioritises bad news over good news because for thousands of years, noticing the rustle in the bushes before it noticed the sunset was what kept your ancestors alive. The brain that relaxed and enjoyed the view got eaten. The brain that stayed on alert survived. So here you are, with a threat-detection system designed for a world that no longer exists, running it in your office, your bedroom, your relationship, your own head.

The result is a constant low-level feeling that something is wrong. That you're behind. That the good things don't count as much as the bad things. That you need to worry more, prepare more, brace for whatever's coming next. Your brain is doing its job. The problem is that the job description is 200,000 years out of date.

Gratitude practice, done properly, retrains this. When you deliberately focus your attention on something good and hold that focus long enough for your body to register it, you're building new neural pathways. You're teaching your brain that positive experiences are worth encoding too. Neuroscientist Rick Hanson's research shows that holding a positive experience in your awareness for 15 to 20 seconds is enough to start moving it from short-term to long-term memory. Below that threshold, it washes off like water. Above it, it starts to stick.

This isn't about pretending everything is fine. It's about giving good experiences the same weight your brain automatically gives the bad ones. Balancing the scales that evolution tilted toward threat.

What you'll learn:
✦ Why your brain prioritises negative information over positive information and where that wiring comes from
✦ Why good experiences wash off your brain while bad ones stick immediately
✦ Rick Hanson's research on how 15 to 20 seconds of sustained attention moves a positive experience into long-term memory
✦ Why gratitude that stays in your head doesn't work and why it has to register in your body
✦ The difference between genuine appreciation and forcing yourself to feel thankful when you don't
✦ How consistent gratitude practice physically changes neural pathways over weeks

Perfect for anyone whose brain defaults to worst-case scenarios, who lies awake replaying the one bad moment from an otherwise fine day, or who wants to train their brain to encode the good with the same intensity it encodes the bad.

🧘 This week's practice: Three times a day, pause and notice one thing you genuinely appreciate. Could be small. Your tea. The light coming through the window. A moment of quiet. Then hold your attention on it for 20 seconds. Let it register in your body. Where do you feel it? Chest? Stomach? Shoulders dropping? After a week, notice whether your brain starts catching good moments on its own.

📚 Book: "Hardwiring Happiness" by Rick Hanson. The neuroscientist behind the research on how to turn everyday positive experiences into lasting changes in your brain. Practical, evidence-based, and written for people who are sceptical about gratitude but open to the science.
