Un estudio investigó cómo las personas de diferentes culturas describen el aspecto, sabor y olor de las cosas. Descubrieron diferencias importantes. Por ejemplo, los angloparlantes podían nombrar fácilmente colores y formas, como "triángulo" o "verde". Sin embargo, tenían dificultades para describir sabores y usaban muchas palabras diferentes para hablar del simple sabor del agua amarga. Por otro lado, las personas que hablan farsi, laosiano y cantonés, quienes están acostumbradas a muchos alimentos sabrosos, describieron fácilmente los sabores. Algunas lenguas, como el umpila de Australia, no tienen muchas palabras para los colores, pero son muy buenas para describir olores. Esto es evidencia de que nuestra cultura y estilo de vida pueden influir en cómo vemos y hablamos del mundo.
