Don Studey's Own Daughters Can't Agree on Green Hollow

Don Studey's Own Daughters Can't Agree on Green Hollow

One daughter has spent decades saying her father was the Green Hollow Killer — that Don Studey allegedly murdered dozens of women and buried them in wells in rural Iowa. The other daughter has spent just as long saying it's a lie. Bob Motta was caught in the middle.

During his sixteen months investigating the Don Studey case, Bob had Lucy Studey-McKiddy on one phone telling him where the bodies were allegedly buried — and Lucy's sister Susan on the other phone, drunk-texting him that their father was strict but not a murderer. Both women were adamant. Neither was budging. So what does a defense attorney do? He looks for the lie. Bob spent over a hundred hours in conversation with Lucy, probing her accounts, pushing for details, cross-referencing her stories.

They were repetitive — she told the same accounts again and again — but they never changed. The details stayed locked. Retired FBI Special Agent Robin Drake adds the behavioral layer — Lucy shows clear trauma responses. Her childhood outcry gives her claims real weight.

But trauma can also distort and exaggerate memory, and the numbers may be inflated. The statistical reality is that serial killers almost never involve family members, making the claim that Lucy helped dispose of bodies an outlier. And the biggest hole in the case remains — no one has come forward as the family of a missing person, and missing persons databases haven't produced matches. Lucy explained her body count estimate as roughly two a year over twenty-five years. The truth of Green Hollow may live somewhere between what both sisters are saying. Part three of the conversation with Bob Motta.
