Payroll in Sweden

Payroll in Sweden

When you think of Sweden, the first things that come to mind are probably the priceless treasure that is ABBA, flat-pack furniture, and delicious little meatballs. But the Scandinavian nation has much more to offer than these cultural touchstones. Sweden’s economy is also one of the most developed in Europe, with a strong sense of equality baked into its labor laws. Strong sectors such as pharmaceuticals and tech have flourished in Sweden, attracting a wide range of multinational businesses and foreign employees. Its highly skilled, highly educated, and largely bilingual (English-speaking) workforce also presents a big draw for international companies interested in gaining a foothold in Europe.

However, Sweden’s labor landscape is also characterized by some genuinely surprising complexity, particularly when it comes to benefits, holiday pay, and the cultural norms of Swedish working life. The employee-employer relationship is built on a foundation of trust, and this extends to payroll as well. Getting payroll wrong in Sweden can create significant tension. Another issue employers should watch out for is the taxation rules around benefits, which can trip up employees and employers who may have just wanted to treat their team to lunch. In this episode of Payroll Around the World, we’re joined by ADP experts Ingela Persson, Senior Service and Implementation Manager at ADP Sweden, and Ben Dale-Gough, Senior Director for Northern Europe, as they share insights into Sweden’s payroll culture. We also speak to Carlo, a Stockholm-based consultant who gives his perspective on the taxation of benefits.
