Collective Responsibility & Thinking and Moral Consideration | Responsibility and Judgment

In this episode of the podcast, host Roger Berkowitz discusses two essays from our summer read, Responsibility and Judgment: “Thinking and Moral Considerations” and “Collective Responsibility.” He explains Arendt’s post-metaphysical claim that shared morality and metaphysical truth have collapsed, separating solitary, negative moral thinking (“I will not”) from public political judgment. Prompted by Eichmann and the “banality of evil,” Arendt links evil to thoughtlessness, clichés, and the failure of conscience, asking whether inability to think enables wrongdoing. Berkowitz outlines her Socratic model of thinking as a quest for meaning (not truth) that unfreezes concepts, risks nihilism, yet can restrain evil by preserving inner harmony. He then summarizes Arendt’s distinction between personal guilt and political collective responsibility, warning that “we are all guilty” erases real culpability while membership can still entail responsibility for what is done in a community’s name.
