There’s a three-year window in every woman’s life when she can lose more muscle than during the previous 20 years combined. Even with plenty of protein and regular exercise, many women still experience postmenopausal muscle loss.

Leucine is an essential amino acid that signals your muscles to grow. As you age, your protein and leucine requirements increase, making both especially important for maintaining muscle after menopause.

After menopause, estrogen levels drop significantly, contributing to postmenopausal muscle loss. Fortunately, exercise can help rebuild muscle. Research has shown that weight training can significantly improve muscle loss after menopause while also supporting bone health.

Age-related muscle loss is known as sarcopenia. It affects not only muscle tissue but also the nervous system and connective tissue, making it more difficult to rebuild muscle over time. This is why it’s important to begin preserving and rebuilding muscle as early as possible.
