Fall Asleep to The Mystery of the The Wow! Signal

On an August night in 1977, a radio telescope in an empty Ohio field was quietly listening to the sky. For seventy-two seconds, something answered — a signal so sharp that the astronomer who found it days later circled it in red pen and wrote a single word beside it: Wow. It came from the direction of Sagittarius, near the natural frequency of hydrogen. It has never repeated. Nearly fifty years later, no one knows for certain what it was.

Tonight, let that gentle question keep you company as you drift off. This is a long, slow, unhurried retelling of the Wow! Signal, made for sleep. We wander together through what we know — the patient machine, the numbers on the page, the red circle, the search that followed — and through the things that remain uncertain: the ordinary explanations that never quite fit, the passing comets, the distant sun-like star, the mirror of our own reaching out into the dark, and the recent idea that a cloud of hydrogen may simply have flared once and gone quiet.
