Anna Kepner's Stepbrother's Mom Won't Do What?

A federal court filing just used the phrase "very unfortunate family dynamic" to explain why Timothy Hudson's murder trial can't move forward. His defense lawyers told Judge Beth Bloom they don't have access to the family members they need for a Miller hearing — the constitutionally required proceeding that determines whether a sixteen-year-old defendant can be sentenced to life.

The defense won't say who they can't reach. A custody fight between Timothy's biological parents — separate from the criminal case — fills in the details the defense filing deliberately omitted. His mother is married to Anna Kepner's father Christopher. Custody filings from Timothy's biological father allege she texted him in the first forty-eight hours that she'd told their son "I love him." Within weeks, those filings claim she said she couldn't jeopardize her marriage. Court records show she and Christopher expelled Timothy from their home. His step-grandmother publicly called for charges against both of them for failing to supervise the children on the cruise.

Timothy has been in federal custody since mid-June. The detention order guarantees family visitation. According to the documented record, his mother hasn't visited. The defense needs her testimony to build Timothy's Miller case — his mental health history, his medications, his behavioral history, the home environment. Every one of those questions leads back to what the adults in this family knew before they put two unrelated teenagers in a cabin together without a parent — and what they chose not to act on.
