The Science of Laughter: What It Actually Does to Your Body PART 1

The Science of Laughter: What It Actually Does to Your Body PART 1

What are the real health benefits of laughter? Not the greeting-card version — the measured, physical effects: what a deep belly laugh actually does to your muscles, your breathing, your nervous system, and your aging body.

To find out, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George did something terrifying: after six years of silent PhD research, she signed up for a stand-up comedy class at Gotham Comedy Club in New York — open mics, bombing in front of classmates, writing a "tight five," all of it. And on her performance night, Jim Gaffigan walked in and did the set right before hers.

In Part 1 of this two-part episode on laughter and health, MC shares that story and starts unpacking the science: why laughter isn't an emotion but a whole-body sensation, what a 15-year study tracking 53,000 Norwegians suggests about laughter and living longer, and evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar's six experiments — from the lab to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival — designed to answer whether laughter really releases endorphins. She's honest about the research, too: some laughter studies over-claim, and she separates what's solid from what's hype.

Part 1 ends right as the Dunbar experiments get interesting — Part 2 digs into the results and what they mean for your health as you age.
