All You Have to Do Is Ask: Trinity’s Journey Through Addiction, Spirituality & Recovery

Trinity shares how her addiction began unexpectedly in her late thirties while she was living in an abusive marriage. Although alcohol and medication became the substances she struggled with, recovery helped her recognize earlier patterns of codependency, people-pleasing, masking, and seeking validation from others.

After repeated attempts at treatment and periods of relapse, Trinity experienced a medical crisis that she describes as a near-death experience. While hospitalized, injured, and feeling completely alone, she surrendered to the Goddess and asked for help. She says that moment lifted the consuming obsession to drink, although occasional cravings still arise.

Her early recovery involved major life changes, reading the AA Big Book, prayer, meditation, and eventually attending meetings and working the Twelve Steps. Because traditional recovery spaces sometimes felt overly Christian, Trinity began transforming the Steps into pagan rituals. She describes ritual as “prayer with props” and believes witches can use familiar spiritual practices to deepen their recovery.

The conversation explores:

  • How addiction can begin with codependency, masking, and the desire to be chosen
  • Why surrender is difficult in a culture that celebrates control and independence
  • Using prayer, meditation, ritual, and personification to respond to cravings
  • Adapting the Twelve Steps through witchcraft and pagan spirituality
  • The healing power of meetings, community, and relationships with other people in recovery
  • Why recovering out loud helps reduce shame and shows others where support is available
  • The importance of daily “spiritual hygiene” and conscious contact with a higher power
  • Learning to experience grief, depression, and difficult emotions without escaping through substances
  • Passing recovery, not only the risk of addiction, on to the next generation

Trinity’s central message is that relapse does not make someone hopeless or unworthy. Recovery remains available, and people can keep trying without shame. Her story ultimately emphasizes surrender, spiritual connection, service, community, and the willingness to ask for help.
