Episode 247: Are You Defending the Wrong Hill?

Are You Defending the Wrong Hill in Your Thyroid Recovery?

What if the reason you're still struggling with your thyroid symptoms isn't that you haven't tried hard enough?

What if you're spending enormous amounts of time, energy, attention, and money defending things you've been told are critical to your recovery, when they may not actually be the most important problem to solve?

In this episode of the Thyroid Answers Podcast, Dr. Eric Balcavage explores the idea of the "hill" you've decided is worth fighting for and why thyroid patients can accumulate more and more hills throughout their recovery journey.

Maybe it's getting your free T3 above 4.0. Maybe it's raising your ferritin above 100. Maybe it's lowering thyroid antibodies. Maybe it's staying completely gluten-free or dairy-free because you have Hashimoto's. Maybe it's identifying and eliminating mold exposure. Maybe it's taking a growing list of supplements or continually adjusting thyroid medication.

The problem isn't that these things can never matter.

The problem is assuming that because something can matter, it must be the thing that matters most right now.

Dr. Eric explains why a laboratory abnormality is not necessarily the problem itself. Sometimes, the lab value is giving you information about what is happening physiologically.

For example, low T3 may occur in the setting of inadequate energy availability. In that situation, immediately trying to push T3 higher may mean you're treating the number rather than addressing the underlying issue.

The same principle applies to ferritin, thyroid antibodies, gluten avoidance, mold testing, and other commonly targeted areas of thyroid care.

The bigger question becomes:

Are you actually getting healthier, or are you simply getting better at managing your lab values?

Dr. Eric also explains how his state-based medicine framework changes the starting question from "What do I need to fix?" to "What is this person responding to?"

Instead of treating every abnormal lab value as another target, we need to consider the person's overall physiological state, including their symptoms, sleep, nourishment, exercise load, stress, medications, supplements, inflammation, environmental factors, and available capacity.

Because sometimes the best intervention isn't adding another treatment.

Sometimes it's taking something away.

In this episode, you'll learn:
  • Why thyroid patients can accumulate "hills" to defend throughout their recovery
  • The difference between a true hill and a false hill
  • Why a ferritin level under 100 does not automatically mean iron deficiency
  • Why low free T3 does not automatically mean you need T3 medication
  • How inadequate energy availability can change thyroid hormone metabolism
  • Why pushing thyroid signaling higher may not address the reason T3 became low
  • What thyroid antibodies actually tell us, and what they don't
  • Why Hashimoto's does not automatically mean everyone needs to be gluten-free
  • Why a positive mold-related test does not automatically establish that mold is driving someone's symptoms
  • The danger of turning possible contributors into universal explanations
  • How restrictive diets, supplements, medications, testing, and exercise can become additional physiological load
  • Why improving a laboratory value does not necessarily mean the person is healthier
  • The difference between managing lab values and actually recovering
  • How state-based medicine changes the way we interpret thyroid labs and symptoms
  • Why some people may need more treatment while others may actually need less
  • The questions you should ask before adding another supplement, eliminating another food, changing medication, or chasing another lab value
The questions to ask yourself

Before you decide that another lab value, diagnosis, food, supplement, medication, or exposure is the next hill you need to defend, ask:

What problem am I actually trying to solve?

What evidence do I have that this hill is driving the problem?

Is defending this hill actually making me healthier?

What is it costing me to defend this hill?

And perhaps the most revealing question:

If I stopped defending this hill tomorrow, what am I afraid would happen?

The goal isn't to stop treating legitimate problems.

The goal is to become more intentional about deciding what actually deserves your limited time, energy, attention, and resources right now.

Because there will always be another number to optimize, another pathway to support, another food to eliminate, another supplement to take, another test to run, and another hill to defend.

The goal isn't to capture all of them.

The goal is to determine which ones actually matter right now.
