2 Samuel 3:1-21 David Gets the Kingdom... (August 23, 2026 PM, Dr. Michael Grasso)

"God is sovereign even over the sins of men.

In 2 Samuel 3:1–21, David finally moves closer to receiving the kingdom God had promised him. Yet the circumstances are surprisingly messy. Civil war continues. Abner turns against Ish-bosheth. And David himself demands the return of Michal, even as the narrative increasingly exposes his sinful multiplication of wives.

The passage therefore presents both the remarkable providence of God and the growing failures of David. God overrules human sin to accomplish His holy purposes, while David’s sins with women begin to lay the groundwork for the devastating consequences that will come later in his reign.

All of this also points beyond David. Israel needs a greater Son of David—a King who will suffer and then reign like David, but without David’s sin. That King is Jesus Christ, who does not take from His bride but gives Himself for her.
