Latoya Alston knew how to look okay while quietly falling apart.

She survived sexual assault by someone she trusted, abuse in relationships, shame, and the kind of church hurt that can make you question whether the people who talk about God are actually safe. Growing up as a preacher’s kid, she learned how to smile, serve, encourage everyone else—and bury the parts of herself that were bleeding underneath.

Eventually, the pain got so heavy that Latoya stepped away from church.

But Jesus didn’t step away from her.

He met her angry. Confused. Exhausted. Hurt. Unpolished. And somewhere in that season, Latoya began learning that God’s love was never dependent on how much she served, how strong she looked, or how well she performed Christianity.

We talk about what happens when trauma stays buried, the danger of coping through work and ministry, church hurt, identity, forgiveness, healing at the root, and how Rising from the Shadows was born out of the very pain she once wanted to hide.

Because like a physical wound left untreated, buried trauma can spread into healthy parts of our lives—and eventually bleed onto the people we love.
