Ep 163 - They Chose Hope After 9/11: The Healing Power of Human Connection | Terry Sears & Monica McNamara

Ep 163 - They Chose Hope After 9/11: The Healing Power of Human Connection | Terry Sears & Monica McNamara

What if the most powerful response to terrorism is not fear—but dignity, love and human connection?

On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Ed Hart welcomes Terry Grace Sears and Monica Meehan McNamara of Dignity Beyond Borders for a deeply moving conversation about grief, trauma, resilience and the lifelong journey of healing.

For more than two decades, Terry and Monica have worked alongside children, spouses and families affected by 9/11—as well as young people around the world impacted by terrorism, war and mass violence.

This conversation explores why healing does not mean forgetting, why closure may not exist after traumatic loss and how being surrounded by people who truly understand can help someone begin to move forward.

Terry and Monica share:

• Why 9/11 remains both a public tragedy and a deeply personal loss
• How the children and spouses of those killed have carried their grief for 25 years
• Why people need to be seen as more than what happened to them
• How telling our stories can become part of the healing process
• The extraordinary impact of Project COMMON BOND
• How young people from opposing sides of conflict discover their shared humanity
• Why “the ministry of presence” can be more powerful than finding the perfect words
• How trauma can be transformed into purpose and service
• Why love, dignity and an open heart still offer hope to our world

One of the most powerful truths in this episode is that healing is not a destination. It is a lifelong process of putting one foot in front of the other, rediscovering joy and allowing pain to become a source of compassion and purpose.

As Terry explains, sometimes healing begins with a simple promise:

“I will be there for you until you don’t need me to be there for you.”

And as Monica reminds us:

“Love goes a long way—and it is transformative.”

Today, we remember those whose lives were taken on September 11, 2001. We honor their families, the survivors and the first responders—and we recognize those who have spent the past 25 years ensuring that no one faces trauma and grief alone.
