The Final Flight of Ethiopian Airlines 961

Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 was hijacked in 1996 by three men who demanded that the aircraft be flown to Australia. The captain, Leul Abate, repeatedly warned the hijackers that the Boeing 767 did not have enough fuel to reach their destination, but they refused to accept the warning and prevented the crew from making a necessary refueling stop.
As the fuel ran out, the pilots were forced to attempt an emergency ditching in the Indian Ocean near the Comoros Islands. Captain Abate fought to control the aircraft and bring it down as safely as possible, while crew members and passengers struggled to survive the unfolding crisis. Journalist Mo Amin was among those who attempted to resist the hijackers.
The aircraft struck the water and broke apart, killing most of those on board. Many passengers had inflated their life jackets inside the cabin before impact, causing them to become trapped as the fuselage sank. Despite the devastation, 50 people survived, largely due to the crew’s efforts to control the aircraft during the ditching.
The tragedy highlighted the deadly consequences of hijackers refusing to cooperate with the flight crew and demonstrated the importance of cockpit security and emergency procedures. It became another pivotal event in the evolution of modern aviation security standards.
