With nine women found dead across Ekurhuleni in just over two months, once again the spotlight is on femicide and violence against women in South Africa. But as the shock, outrage and media attention surrounding each case eventually fades, are we becoming exhausted by the constant cycle? Media practitioner and lecturer Pontsho Pilane speaks to Lester Kiewit about “femicide fatigue”, a concept she wrote about in 2020, and why repeated exposure to these horrific cases can leave people feeling despondent, overwhelmed and powerless.
