For gay men who dream of becoming dads, adoption can feel like a maze of options, costs, legal requirements, and ethical questions. In this episode, I sit down with Amos Wolff to create a practical guide to adoption for gay men. We explore domestic and international adoption, foster-to-adopt, open versus closed adoption, realistic costs, discrimination gay couples may encounter, and what happens when an international adoption initially recognizes only one father as the legal parent.

We also go beyond the logistics to explore what’s actually best for the child. We discuss attachment and trauma, maintaining connections with birth families, talking to children openly about their adoption story, navigating changing boundaries in open adoption, and the psychological preparation prospective gay dads should consider before becoming parents.
