The Akkadians: The World's First Empire — Sleep Podcast

The Akkadians. A slow, bedtime retelling of the world’s first true empire — the first time in human history that one man, from one small city, gathered a whole region of warring city-states under a single rule. Around twenty-four centuries before Christ, on the open alluvial plain between the Euphrates and the Tigris, a king named Sargon made that story true, and the clay has kept it ever since.

One hour, in the voice of the show: a deep, warm storyteller at the edge of sleep. We hear what the kings wrote about themselves, and what their enemies wrote about them — the birth legend of the basket on the reeds, the cupbearer’s dream, the thirty-four battles, the five thousand warriors who ate their bread in his presence, the stone stele set on the mountain slope.

This episode:

  • The plain at dusk — the alluvium of southern Iraq, the two rivers, the first cities.
  • A world of small kings — Sumer, the city-states, and the flood of names in the King List.
  • The baby in the basket — Sargon’s birth legend, and the shadow of Moses across four centuries.
  • The cupbearer’s dream — the god, the sun, and the woman who was not to be touched.
  • The king in the collar — from Ur to Kish, and the first conquests.
  • A kingdom of many tongues — Sumer, Akkadian, and the language that would outlive them both.
  • The first emperor — “king of the four corners of the world,” and the five thousand who ate before him.
  • The daughters and the priests — Enheduanna, the first named author in the world’s literature.
  • The king who became a god — Naram-Sin, and the stone stele on the mountain.
  • The curse on the city — Agade, and the last kings who called themselves kings of it.
  • The rain that stopped — drought, the Gutian collapse, and the lament of Ur-Namma.
  • What the clay keeps — the long silence, the lost city, and why the story still stands.

Written to be heard, not read. A low, steady bed of desert wind suits the opening. No music is required. Dates follow the Middle Chronology; where the record is genuinely uncertain, the narration says so.
