The Indus Cities — Sleep Podcast

The Indus Cities — Sleep Podcast

Four and a half thousand years ago, on the alluvial plain between two great rivers, a civilization built the most disciplined cities of the Bronze Age — and then kept its silence.

The people of the Indus fired every brick to the same proportion. They laid their streets at right angles. They gave nearly every house a private bathing room and carried its waste out in brick-lined drains to a soak pit. They kept a system of weights, accurate to a few percent, across a million and a quarter of square kilometers, for seven centuries. They sent their red beads into the royal tombs of Mesopotamia, and they wrote — short, sealed lines, on the bundles and the tags, for the trade.

But they left no readable sentence. No king’s name. No god’s name. No decree. In this bedtime hour we walk their grid, weigh their beads, stand at the edge of their sea, follow the trade the long way round, and come, at the end, back to the one question the whole record is built to leave open: who were they, and why have they kept their silence?

A slow, unhurried reading at the edge of sleep. The wind keeps moving.
