#73 - IDRiM Podcast Live - Future Prospect of Disaster Research from the Lens of Young Researchers

Summary:

Recorded live at the 2026 IDRiM Conference, this panel discussion explores the changing landscape of disaster research and the challenges facing researchers and practitioners in an increasingly complex world. As disasters become more multifaceted, interconnected and difficult to understand through a single lens, the conversation considers emerging challenges around multi-hazards, compounding risks, vulnerability and the broader context of polycrisis.

The panel reflects on whether disaster research and practice are keeping pace with these changing realities, and what the future of the field might look like for the next generation of researchers.

The discussion also considers the role of the IDRiM Society and its conferences in shaping that future: how conferences can engage more meaningfully with the communities in which they are held, how early-career and emerging researchers can become more involved in the wider research community, and how IDRiM can continue building connections and opportunities beyond its annual conference.

Bringing together different perspectives from across the panel, the conversation offers a forward-looking reflection on disaster research, collaboration and the role of the next generation in shaping the future of the field.
