#75 - IDRiM 2026 - Conference Review. Part 1

Summary:

This episode of the IDRiM Podcast reflects on the experiences, highlights and lessons learned from the IDRiM 2026 Conference in Bali, Indonesia. The discussion explores the conference's welcoming atmosphere, rich cultural experiences and opportunities for international collaboration. Particular emphasis is placed on the active involvement of researchers, practitioners, government representatives and young scientists in discussions on disaster risk management, climate resilience and preparedness. Volcanic activity that disrupted some participants' travel arrangements also served as a timely reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness, resilience and effective risk communication.

The episode also examines challenges encountered during the conference, including the large number of parallel sessions, venue accessibility, technical difficulties and limited opportunities for hybrid participation. Reflections on the growing involvement of young scientists highlight the importance of improving their visibility, networking and professional development opportunities. The discussion also considers potential improvements to future conferences, including more accessible venues, better scheduling, improved technical arrangements and greater flexibility for participants affected by unexpected disruptions.

Beyond the academic discussions, the episode celebrates the cultural experiences, personal connections and sense of community that made the Bali conference memorable. The dedication, hospitality and adaptability of the local organisers are recognised as key strengths of the event. Overall, the reflections emphasise the importance of inclusivity, cross-sector collaboration and continuous improvement in shaping future IDRiM conferences and strengthening the international disaster risk management community.
