Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster Part 2 - Why Rob Took the Blame

Count back from the answer Rob Reiner gave a radio interviewer in September 2025 about his son, and the clean streak he described begins in 2019. That was the year someone inside the Reiner home called the police on Nick Reiner twice, and it runs straight through 2020, the year a judge found him gravely disabled by mental illness. Rob's answer, and why he framed it the way he did, opens chapter two of Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story.

The police logs are specific: a welfare check at 9:51 p.m. on February 25, 2019, and a call coded mental at 4:39 p.m. on September 27. The 2020 conservatorship was confidential by law and surfaced only in January 2026, when a newspaper reported it a month after the deaths. A licensed professional named Steven Baer was appointed to run Nick's treatment, and for one year the state could compel his medication and place him in a locked facility. People with knowledge of that treatment put the diagnosis at schizophrenia and later schizoaffective disorder. In 2021 the order expired, and the family went back to the only system it had ever had, which was itself.

That system had been absorbing the damage since 2016, when Being Charlie earned $32,964 worldwide and Nick moved into the guesthouse with a reported allowance of $10,000 a month. He told a podcast in 2018, laughing, about wrecking that guesthouse on uppers. A Thanksgiving guest described screaming, air freshener masking smells, and a household employee who threatened to quit. A friend recalled Nick making the housekeeper drive across town to bring him home to use his own bathroom.

Then came the photographs: Las Vegas in 2024, a red carpet in 2025, and a holiday party at Conan O'Brien's where sources say his parents brought him to keep an eye on him. Tony walks the nine years between a radio studio and a Sunday in December. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty.
