In this episode of The Demonologist Podcast, religious demonologist Adam Blai explores how some of the most important decisions in your life can be hijacked by your emotions, your imagination, or a coincidence that feels more meaningful than it really is. How can you tell the difference between a genuine nudge from God, a temptation pulling you off course, and a mental story you may be building from nothing?

Drawing on St. Ignatius of Loyola’s discernment of spirits, Adam breaks down the difference between spiritual consolation and desolation, why guilt can sometimes be a gift, and why you should never make major life changes while you’re spiritually or emotionally flooded. He explains why consolation and desolation can sometimes appear at the same time, the Ignatian warning against making major decisions in desolation, and how to actively “fight back” against destructive thoughts instead of simply waiting for them to fade.

Adam also explores why bringing a struggle into the light by sharing it with a trusted person can strip it of its power, what reciprocal discernment can look like when something truly comes from God, and how providence may open doors when a direction is real. At the same time, he warns against building major life decisions on coincidence alone and explains how ego, emotion, and the desire to feel specially guided can cloud spiritual discernment.

Throughout the episode, Adam emphasizes the importance of reason, patience, prayer, and outside feedback over a sudden rush of certainty. He closes with a striking real-life example of urgent spiritual discernment during an emergency, demonstrating that while patience is often essential, there are rare moments when immediate action is exactly what faith requires.

Essential listening for anyone trying to discern God’s will, wrestle with temptation, distinguish spiritual consolation from desolation, or determine whether a powerful interior prompting is genuine spiritual guidance—or simply your own mind running ahead of you.
