Dylan Larkin REFUSES to Play for the Red Wings | Hellebuyck’s Devils Debut & Jacob Fowler’s Breakout

Dylan Larkin has told the Detroit Red Wings he won’t play while he waits to be traded, and the situation has gone from uncomfortable to unworkable. Nick Zararis (Locked On Oilers) and Hunter (Locked On Penguins) explain why a healthy captain sitting out is a bad look, what agent Pat Brisson’s statement signals, and whether Detroit’s front office even has the authority to finish a deal. They also look at the reported interest from the Minnesota Wild and why the NHL trade market makes a blockbuster this early in the season so hard to pull off.

The Wild are the reported frontrunner for Larkin, but is adding him a smart move when Quinn Hughes’ future in Minnesota is uncertain? After Bill Guerin’s latest comments on Hughes, Nick and Hunter ask whether Minnesota is spending even more assets without any guarantee its franchise defenseman re-signs. They also map out the Western Conference playoff path through Dallas and Colorado, and why even a Larkin-boosted Wild team may not be a true Stanley Cup contender.

Connor Hellebuyck made his New Jersey Devils debut in a 5-1 win over the Dallas Stars, stopping 17 of 18 shots. The guys put the trade in historical context, comparing it to Patrick Roy’s move to Colorado and Ryan Miller’s short stay in St. Louis, and explain why a goalie of Hellebuyck’s caliber being traded in his prime has almost never happened in the modern NHL. They also run through the Devils’ long goaltending carousel, give Winnipeg credit for the return including Dawson Mercer, and ask how New Jersey should manage Hellebuyck’s workload after he missed training camp.

To close, Nick and Hunter break down Jacob Fowler’s early-season emergence for the Montreal Canadiens, including a 46-save shutout against the St. Louis Blues and league-leading goals saved above expected. With Jakob Dobeš struggling and Nick Suzuki and Ivan Demidov out, Fowler has kept Montreal near the top of the Atlantic Division. They finish on the bigger trend: why “45 is the new 55” for goalie starts, why tandems are taking over, and how Montreal should protect a 21-year-old who has never carried an NHL-length workload.
