Sandra Birchmore: That Fracture Explains WHAT?!

Sandra Birchmore’s fractured hyoid bone is one of the most heavily contested details in Matthew Farwell’s federal murder trial. Prosecutors allege the former Stoughton police officer strangled Birchmore, who was pregnant, and staged the scene at her Canton apartment in February 2021. The defense says she died by suicide. Farwell has pleaded not guilty.

Outside forensic experts have argued the fracture and the way Birchmore’s body was positioned do not fit the hanging scenario. The defense challenges their conclusions and intends to offer an alternative interpretation of the physical evidence. Investigators also documented a strap that prosecutors call the murder weapon; a forensic scientist testified that Farwell’s DNA was found on it. What that finding establishes is part of the jury’s job.

Her messages provide another timeline. Days before her death, Birchmore told a friend that Farwell wanted a key and had been looking in her closet and bathroom. She reportedly described his behavior as odd. The prosecution sees those movements as significant. Under questioning, the friend acknowledged it was possible he was looking for another man.

The October 23 testimony focused on Birchmore’s mental health. Her therapist, Diala Alkhalil, said she had never observed suicidal thinking in their sessions and remembered Birchmore anticipating motherhood. The defense pointed to older expressions of distress and raised Zoloft’s warnings. The therapist also recounted Birchmore’s account of seeing her late mother standing at the foot of the bed.

DNA testing identified Jason Pickard as the unborn baby’s biological father, not Farwell, as Birchmore had believed. This combined episode follows the physical findings and the final-days testimony without treating any single fact as a verdict. Each detail is important because the two sides are asking jurors to draw radically different conclusions from the same record.
