Remember The Game? #42 - Donkey Kong Country

Remember The Game? #42 - Donkey Kong Country

I say it almost every episode, but I'm really excited to talk about this week's game. Donkey Kong Country is easily on "10 favourite games of all-time" list. It's a masterpiece. Donkey Kong Country is just one of those games that everybody has played. It's one of the best selling video games in history, and at one point it was even been packaged with the Super Nintendo itself. At a time when people were looking at the Sega Genesis and it's graphical capabilities, this game was the SNES's way of pushing back. It's absolutely gorgeous, and as far as I'm concerned it looks as good today as it did twenty-five years ago. I've said it a million times, but Super Mario World is my favourite game ever. I think it's literally the perfect video game. Donkey Kong Country is just as good. Frankly, it looks better and it has better music than Mario does. The 16-bit era of video games is still the golden age in this old timer's mind, and this game is one of the crown jewels of that generation. I don't even know what to say about, I just love it that much. I've beaten this game a million times, and I find myself going back to it again and again. The gameplay is tight, it's fun to play, it's perfect. It introduced us to Diddy Kong, and it showed the world why Cranky Kong (who's the original Donkey Kong, FYI) is the best character in gaming history. And we got Funky Kong. And Donkey Kong is a boss. King K Rool is a dope villain. The mine cart levels! Shooting from barrel to barrel! In a blizzard!! You can ride a swordfish! So damned good. Games like Donkey Kong Country are why I started this podcast in the first place. I have so many great memories of playing it as a kid. And this week, my buddy Henry came by to listen to me talk about some of them. He had a few of his own too. Great game, great guest, great episode. Check it out.

But Super Mario 3D Land is one that slips through my memory cracks a lot, and dare I say, for a Mario game I think it's actually a little underrated...It doesn't really do anything new or special, but it's a rock-solid 3D platformer, it brings back classic tunes and power-ups from previous Mario games, and while I think it's a little bit of a tech demo for the 3DS's 3D features, the fact remains that it's got that same level of polish most of my favourite plumber's games have.Pending RTG Hall of Famer Mark McCue is my guest this week, and while he has a stronger attachment to 3D Land than I do, I think I actually like it a little more than he does. At the end of the day it's me and Mark talking about a Mario game and sprinkling in some comedy stories. Remember The Game? #339 - Bomberman 64

Remember The Game? #339 - Bomberman 64

Bomberman is a damned retro gaming hero, and I'm ashamed that it took 339 episodes to give that little guy his flowers and show him some love. But we're righting that wrong this week with the Bomberman game I've easily spent the most time with: Bomberman 64.I've never owned a Bomberman game before, but one of my best friends in High School had this one and we played it. My God, how we played it. So many hours of blowing each there up, fighting over alliances, backstabbing, trash talking, and of course, dressing up our Bombermen. One of my all-time favourite multiplayer titles.I didn't really play the single player mode back in the day, but I've spent the past week grinding through that as well. I don't think it holds up nearly as well as the multiplayer, and it reminds me of why I hate this fucking controller so much, but it's far from the worse 64 game I've ever played.I'm rolling solo this week, and I had a great time reliving my childhood and talking Bomberman 64. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.And before we bomb, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, we talk about the sense of accomplishment that came with beating a game as a kid, and why modern games just don't seem to hit the same. What's my favourite Mario Kart World track? And do I have any advice for those looking to jump into the world of self-employment?Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 N64 multiplayer heavyweights: Super Smash Bros, Goldeneye 007, and WWF No Mercy.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

But for some reason, it's never really clicked with me. I finally spent a week grinding away at it and while I don't think it's as good as its 8-bit counterparts, I have to admit, it won me over. Contra is gaming done right. Run, shoot, jump. My love of the NES games comes from their snare drum tight controls and tough-but-fair challenge. the SNES entry improves on a lot of the aspects of Contra & Super C: better weapons, level variety, obviously the graphics. I may not like the gameplay as much as the older games, but I can't deny that it levels up in a lot of aspects. And it's still tough as fuck, which I love. My boy Tyler hops back on the show this week. Contra III is his preferred flavour of Contra, and while we may have disagreed on where the series peaked, we come together to show this game some love and talk about the good, the bad, and the bullshit (level 5) of Contra III. And before we run 'n gun, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if gaming is stuck in a remaster loop? What console still needs a mini version? And is it wrong to start your kid out with retro games instead of modern stuff? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! But for some reason, I never really gave the first sequel the time of day. And after almost 7 years of podcasts, it's time to right that wrong. I finally played through it and damned if it isn't almost as good as it's older brother. It's the tried and true Mega formula: take down 8 evil robots, steal their weapons, save the world, and die a lot in the process. Like X, it's got those sexy 16-bit graphics, 'Mavericks' instead of robot masters (which are all very fucking cool), and you can still find those Dr. Light chambers to power up with. I think the only thing missing from X2, in my eyes at least, is the nostalgia I have for the first game. And even then, this one holds up just fine. This a great game. My boy Dan from Dissect That Film returns to this week to talk about his favourite MM game in X2. We work through the robot masters, Zero subplot, soundtrack, weapons, and basically just spend an hour fluffing the Blue Bomber. And before we save the world, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I think a video game crash is coming? When will I review some more NES movie games? And if I could be one weapon tool, or accessory from a video game, what would I be? (The answer speaks to my character). Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! It's a fantastic game. But Gears of War 2 managed to top it in every single way. This isn't just one of the best sequels ever, it's unquestionably one of my favourite games of all-time. The gang is back: Marcus, Dom, Baird, and of course, the Cole Train. The story picks up after the events of the first game, and while the combat remains the same, they found a way to improve on it and throw you into so many different scenarios that it never feels played out or boring. Sick story, new weapons, awesome locations, and you even run around inside a giant worm. How could anyone not love Gears 2?? The Dom to my Marcus, my buddy Tyler, returns to the show this week. I love Gears 2 for the campaign, and Tyler gushes about it as well, but also takes a dive into his love of Horde mode and the rest of the multiplayer offerings Gears 2 has to offer. This was as much fun as I've had recording an episode in a long time, and I hope we made all you Gears heads proud. And before we slice up a giant worm, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what the coolest thing I've done as part of the show over the past 7 years has been? Expansion Pass #233 - The SNES

Expansion Pass #233 - The SNES

We skip the first Wednesday of the month to give me time to pay the games for RTG, but fortunately we have a backlog of about 1,000 podcasts on Patreon to draw from to fill in the gaps. And this week, we're turning the nostalgia knob all the way up and looking back at what is inarguably one of the greatest consoles of all-time: the Super Nintendo. Y'all know the raging clue I have for this system, and on this episode we talk about the launch, the SNES era, our favourite games, memories, and so much more. God bless the SNES. Subscriptions start at just $3/month, and 5% of our patreon income every month will be donated to our 24 hour Extra-Life charity stream at the end of the year! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame Everyone around RTG Industries knows I love the NES, and the best games in the NES library are practically royalty around here. That exclusive list includes the Mario trilogy, both Contras, a ton of Mega Man, and of course, the legendary Mike Tyson's Punch-Out...  I have been trying to beat this game on and off for almost 35 years and still haven't reached the top of the mountain. For the longest time, Soda Popinski was my kryptonite. I couldn't beat him as a kid, and he just held court over me (is that a term?) every time I went up against him. I've finally slayed that demon, but the illusive Mike Tyson victory still evades me. For now, anyway. But that doesn't matter. Modern tough games make me crazy, but NES tough games are my torture of choice. I don't think I'll ever get tired of playing Punch-Out, and every couple years I fall into its clutches and spend a month or two swearing at little ref Mario. It's practically a perfect game and I'll tell you why on this episode. And before I get knocked out, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks where most of our listeners are located, so I share some stats. Is there a genre of game I discovered later in life and fell in love with? And what 5 Switch games would I recommend to a newcomer? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame And you can find ye olde Bradley McCue here: Instagram: @TheGamingOdyssey Twitch.tv/VideoGameOdyssey OKami took down Max Payne in the finals of the 2025 Pre-March Madness Patreon Poll Tournament Extravaganza, and after almost 30 hours of playtime, I'm ready to talk about. I agree with everyone that says this game is stunning to look at and the soundtrack is superb. It's creative and tells a story. Honestly, I like almost everything about Okami. Except, playing it... It definitely has some Zelda DNA in it and that isn't a bad thing at all. You're solving puzzles, acquiring power-ups, running through fields. You get to play as a wolf which is rad. I just didn't find the actual gameplay mechanics that interesting. The paintbrush mechanic is sic, but I feel it was under utilized. The combat is kinda boring. And while the writing is really solid (and funny), there's just a little too much of it. My buddy Bradley McCue returns to the show this week. He's a Zelda diehard and liked Okami a little more than I did. I thought it was a work of art that I just didn't want to play, whereas Bradley thought it lived up to the Zelda DNA coursing through its veins. We had a pretty good discussion about this one, so whether you love this game or not, I hope/think you'll enjoy this episode. And before we try to get Issun laid, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what console has the best ratio of good games to bad in its library? What are my favourite video game quotes? And have I ever turned anything really cool down in my careers as a comedian or podcaster?
