Remember The Game? #42 - Donkey Kong Country

Remember The Game? #42 - Donkey Kong Country

I say it almost every episode, but I'm really excited to talk about this week's game. Donkey Kong Country is easily on "10 favourite games of all-time" list. It's a masterpiece. Donkey Kong Country is just one of those games that everybody has played. It's one of the best selling video games in history, and at one point it was even been packaged with the Super Nintendo itself. At a time when people were looking at the Sega Genesis and it's graphical capabilities, this game was the SNES's way of pushing back. It's absolutely gorgeous, and as far as I'm concerned it looks as good today as it did twenty-five years ago. I've said it a million times, but Super Mario World is my favourite game ever. I think it's literally the perfect video game. Donkey Kong Country is just as good. Frankly, it looks better and it has better music than Mario does. The 16-bit era of video games is still the golden age in this old timer's mind, and this game is one of the crown jewels of that generation. I don't even know what to say about, I just love it that much. I've beaten this game a million times, and I find myself going back to it again and again. The gameplay is tight, it's fun to play, it's perfect. It introduced us to Diddy Kong, and it showed the world why Cranky Kong (who's the original Donkey Kong, FYI) is the best character in gaming history. And we got Funky Kong. And Donkey Kong is a boss. King K Rool is a dope villain. The mine cart levels! Shooting from barrel to barrel! In a blizzard!! You can ride a swordfish! So damned good. Games like Donkey Kong Country are why I started this podcast in the first place. I have so many great memories of playing it as a kid. And this week, my buddy Henry came by to listen to me talk about some of them. He had a few of his own too. Great game, great guest, great episode. Check it out.

And I'll tell ya, damned if this isn't one of the best games in the entire Game Boy library. A hidden gem among hidden gems.DK '94 is more than just a Game Boy version of the OG Donkey Kong. It starts that way, but they add like 100 additional puzzle levels once you get through the traditional 4. You play as Mario and your objective is to retrieve a key and make your way to a locked door without being killed by enemies, falling to your death, or running out of time. The levels get more complicated as you go on, and when you toss in some great DK boss fights, you get as charming of puzzle game as I've ever played. My guest this week is our resident Stpd Mnky, my buddy Daniel. We both played through this one for the first time over the past few days and both agree that it really does stack up against the best the Game Boy has to offer. A must-play as far as we're concerned. And before we tackle DK, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what gaming might look like 10 years from now? How am I feeling about Game Pass these days? And do I have any plans to check out the Outlast movie??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! I've played some GREAT games on the Genesis over the life of this show, and I'm happy to add Comix Zone to that list. Looks awesome. Great concept. And tough as fuck. I say it all the time, but I love tough retro games. Just hearing the phrase 'NES tough' turns me on a little. And Comix Zone is along those lines. This might be the toughest Genesis game I've ever played, and I keep coming back for more.I'm rolling solo this week, but I snuck a bunch of listener comments into the game review. If you've never played Comix Zone, I hope this convinces you to give it a shot. Don't let the difficulty scare you off. It's a beat 'em up, inside a comic book. And the protagonist looks like Egon. What else do you need???And before I start reading comics, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what I would do it I had the green light to revive a dormant franchise in a new genre? Which IPs would make great tactical games?? And how do I manage my backlog??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! I sunk about 30 hours into this one to get ready for this episode, and it was time well spent. This is the best RPG I've played in ages.It has an interesting enough story, a small party size (which I love), a banging soundtrack, and when you're not in combat, you can taste a little Link to the Past in the overworked while you use bombs, dashing, and hockshops to solve some pretty deep puzzles. I think Wild Arms gets a little overlooked because it's on the console Final Fantasy VII built, and it really deserves to have more respect put on it. This is a great game.I crossed the retro podcast streams again this week and asked Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast to join me, and we both agreed that aside from a couple minor issues, this is one of the best RPGs in the PlayStation library. And that says something because that was the Attitude Era of role-playing games. We're gonna spoil some plot points and puzzle solutions, but it'll be worth it.And before we break out our teardrops, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what would have happened if Nintendo hadn't launched the NES back in the 80's? What podcasts do I listen to while gaming? And are Shay and I gonna play Split Fiction??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Expansion Pass #189 - The Sony PlayStation

Expansion Pass #189 - The Sony PlayStation

We skip the first Wednesday of the month to give me time to pay the games for RTG, but fortunately we have a backlog of about 1,000 podcasts on Patreon to draw from to fill in the gaps. And this week, we're turning the nostalgia knob all the way up and looking back at the first console I ever bought with my own money, and the one that changed the gaming landscape forever, the original Sony PlayStation. Anyone that was around in the 90's remembers what a big deal this thing was. Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot, Resident Evil, Spyro; the list goes on and on. I love this system as much as the rest of you, so we dedicated an entire podcast to blowing smoke up its memory card slot. Learn more about your ad choices. Before RTG is done, we'll have covered all 11 core Mega Man games. And this week we're tackling what I consider to the the most underrated of the bunch: Mega Man 7 for the SNES.I think MM7 gets overlooked for a couple reasons. After 6 NES games, I think people might have been a little burnt out on the tried-and-true Mega Man formula. And more importantly, the Super Nintendo was the home of Mega Man X, which many consider to be the greatest Mega Man game of all-time. If you haven't played this one, don't sleep on it. The graphics are great, the music rocks, and in reality this is just an NES Mega Man in 16-bit glory. And that's all I wanted it to be.Joining me this is is a fellow podcaster and Mega Man junkie, my pal Dan from the Dissect That Film and Manawurm podcasts. What we thought would be a shorter episode turned into an hour long Mega Man loveliest, as we went through all the levels in this, the various weapons, and the cheese that is the final Wily fight. If you like Mega Man, ya gotta give this one a listen. And before we go after Wily again, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I think I have a video game addiction? Will I ever review a Call of Duty on the show? And where the HELL is Silk Song!?!?Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! When those put those 2 together, you get games like Chip N' Dale and DuckTales. You also the occasionally-overlooked-but-really-solid Darkwing Duck. Let's get dangerous. This one definitely has a little more bite than some of the previous Capcom Disney games. Everyone told me there's a splash of Mega Man in this one, and I agree. Both because you can choose the order you tackle the levels in, and because it's gonna kill you a lot. But I rarely found it "cheap" tough. It was just one of those games that you keep playing and you get good at. Solid soundtrack, good graphics. My only real complaint is that I wish there was more of it.My buddy Bradley McCue returns to the show this week. And while we both kinda drop the ball when it comes to our Darkwing Duck knowledge (something I'm ashamed of because I love this show), we both agreed that Capcom was in the zone back in this era. And while we may not be convinced that DD belongs in the same conversation as DuckTales and Chip N' Dale, it's a game well worth your time. As long as you're not a controller thrower. And before we get dangerous, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks is I'd consider taking the VR plunge if tactical RPGs were VR experiences. Did I ever help my little brother beat games as a kid? And what comes first: Half Life 3, GTA 7, or world peace??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! We're talking about the superb Donkey Kong Country Returns this week.DKC Returns is everything I want in a platformer. It plays really well. It's tough as hell (especially if you try to get all the collectibles). The soundtrack is banging, the graphics are good, there's level variety. The name says it all; this really is a return to classic Donkey Kong Country.PENDING RTG Hall of Famer and the Diddy to my Donkey Kong, ye olde Mark McCue is my guest this week. We came at this game from 2 different directions and had 2 very different playthroughs, but met up at the end to agree this is just a hell of a platformer and a game no DKC fan should miss. And before we go banana collecting, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks when I found games started to get a little soft. Should boss fights have their own separate difficulty sliders?
