038: Kevin Davey – The Development Process of an Algo Trading Strategy, From Objectives to Live Trading

This week on the podcast I have algorithmic trader, Kevin Davey. Who like many guests in the past, he comes from a background in engineering – there’s something about these engineers, they seem to make really great traders… After getting off to a bumpy start 25 years ago, Kevin has come a very long way. Between 2005 and 2007 Kevin competed in the World Cup of Futures Trading Championship, where he finished in first place once, and second place twice. Each time with returns in excess of 100%! Kevin is also the author of Building Winning Algorithmic Trading Systems, a book which has been well-received by the trading community and has plenty of 5-star ratings and reviews on Amazon. During this interview we cover the great focus Kevin places on trading multiple strategies in multiple markets to achieve a smoother equity curve. And he also walks us through his development process for taking an algorithmic strategy from objectives and initial idea, through to total automation. Plus plenty more, and even if you’re not familiar with this side of trading, you shouldn’t have too much trouble keeping up, because Kevin does an excellent job of explaining everything. Also, I’m going to ask again… If you haven’t already done so, could you please leave a very brief review on the podcast in iTunes while you’re listening. 178: Nick Radge – The Blueprint: Create a Simple Trend Following System

Returning guest Nick Radge is a systematic trader of trend following, momentum and mean reversion strategies—which he runs across Australian and U.S. equity markets. When I asked Nick if he'd be willing to do another podcast, I said to him, "This time around, I'd like to discuss something very specific with you; how to create a simple trend following system." So, that's exactly what we did; a complete breakdown of Nick's process. This includes details about strategy objectives and idea generation, portfolio testing and analyzing results, position sizing and risk management, and execution in a live market. This episode should be helpful for anyone interested in riding big market trends (regardless of asset class). And even if trend following doesn't overly appeal to you, then you'll still pick up useful insight to trading systems. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

177: Sam Bankman-Fried – Leaving Wall Street, Entering Crypto Chaos

This episode features Sam Bankman-Fried, who’s trading skill originated from 3-years at Jane Street—a proprietary trading firm renown for being one of the world’s largest ETF liquidity providers. Alameda trade a range of quantitative strategies—such as statistical arbitrage and market making—which are mostly automated, but with a layer of human intervention. Within 2-years Alameda has grown to a point, where each day, it does approximately one billion dollars of turnover across 35 exchanges, accounting for somewhere near 5% of global crypto volume. Sam and I got to discuss many aspects of how Alameda operate and how his team have found lucrative opportunity amongst a chaotic environment… Learn more about your ad choices. 176: Alex, @TAGRtrades – Can the Family Breadwinner Become a Full-Time Trader?

This episode takes on a slightly different format to normal. Essentially, it’s a response to an email that I received from a listener… The email comes from a gentleman who’s 38 years old with a full-time job, his wife is currently studying and he has three kids. He also has the goal to transition out of his current career into full-time trading, but he has a family who are dependent on his income. And that’s the part he has questions about. Therefore, I asked Alex (@TAGRtrades) if he’d be willing to join me on this episode and share his thoughts on the matter. Alex is a full-time day trader, who has developed skill for trading long side momentum in U.S. equities. He’s also appeared previously on episodes 119 and 157. Learn more about your ad choices. 172: Anthony Riley – Clawing Back a Six-Figure Loss

Anthony is a proprietary futures trader from Sydney, with 10-years market experience. He's active—particularly during the night—in a range of products, such as; Australian and U.S. bonds, equity indices, currencies and a few commodities. While he's a click trader, Anthony is quite systematic with his processes and strategies—which are mostly trading spreads between correlated products. Naturally, we speak about many things during this episode, but one of the highlights was hearing about how Anthony got himself into a six-figure drawdown and was able to claw it back in just one-month. We spend quite a bit of time breaking it down. Anthony is also a budding podcaster, who hosts the show Minds of Motorsport. So, if you'd like to hear from people in the world of motorsport, be sure to give it a listen! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
