How poor gut health is linked to mental illness

I first met Dr Sadasivan while out walking my dog, enjoying the outdoors and decompressing from our busy schedules. I've always loved hearing people's stories and discovered Dr Sadasivan is a Psychiatrist with a passion for holistic health. We eventually got on to the topic of gut health and I knew that I had to have her on the Biohackher podcast as a guest.

Dr Sadasivan trained in Psychiatry in the United Kingdom, Mersey deanery rotational training scheme before obtaining membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK). She then moved to Australia where she completed her Fellowship in Psychiatry with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

Dr Sadasivan worked in Psychiatry at the Gold Coast University Hospital for eight years before moving completely to private practice. She was an Associate Professor with Bond University of Medical Sciences where she held the position of Clinical Lead, in charge of medical student clinical posting and training in Psychiatry until 2015.

With over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr Sadasivan specialises in general adult psychiatry. She uses a holistic approach to treat conditions.

In this podcast we discuss the link between gut health and mental disorders, with a particular focus on:

· The gut-brain axis

· The role the gut microbiome plays in mental disorders

· Dr Sadasivan's personal realisation of the importance of gut health

· How inflammation contributes to chronic disease and the function of the vagus nerve

· How food informs, and is medicine, for the body

· The simple changes you can make in your nutrition to improve your mental health

· The connection between genes and mental health

· The role supplementation plays in supporting gut health

· Why social connection helps improve mental health
