Atari Set to Acquire Night Dive Studio
Atari has announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Night Dive Studios, a video game development and publishing company, for a purchase price consisting of an initial consideration of $10 million, payable in cash and Atari shares. Atari also announced that it plans to issue €30 million ($33.9 million) worth of convertible bonds in order to meet its capital needs for its growth strategy and debt refinancing. Night Dive’s expertise in restoring, optimizing, and publishing classic video games, and its proprietary KEX engine, which makes classic games playable on modern hardware, will help enrich Atari’s library of owned IP, leverage Night Dive’s proprietary technology, and support Atari’s retro-focused growth strategy. Apple Invests BIG in Hollywood
Apple is reportedly planning to spend $1 billion a year to release movies in theaters as part of an effort to increase its profile in Hollywood and bring more subscribers to its streaming service. This would be a substantial increase compared to previous years, as most of their original movies have been exclusive to their streaming service or given limited theatrical releases. The move would give Apple movies more traditional theatrical rollouts in thousands of theaters across the country for at least one month. TMNT's The Last Ronin Getting a Game Adaptation
Paramount Global, the rights holder for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is developing a new video game adaptation of The Last Ronin graphic novel. The Last Ronin video game will be a third-person action role-playing game, similar to Sony’s God of War titles, and will focus on a single character, the lone surviving turtle Michelangelo seeking justice for his fallen comrades. The game will be developed by an unnamed studio and is expected to target an older audience. While the game is a few years off from release, fans can expect more details on The Last Ronin and other TMNT games in the coming months and years. Counter Strike 2 Coming this Summer
Valve has just confirmed the arrival of Counter-Strike 2, and it is set to be released sooner than we anticipated. The exact date is yet to be revealed, but the release window is scheduled for the summer of 2023. The game will run on the Source Engine 2 and will be a free upgrade to CS:GO.Valve has also announced that it will be available for limited testing to some CS:GO players, and more details on how to participate will be revealed shortly. Nintendo’s decision to close eShops has upset fans and lovers of video game history as many games may disappear and never be available again. In response, YouTuber The Completionist spent almost a year buying his way through both libraries, purchasing 866 Wii U games and 1547 3DS titles, totaling 1.2TB of data for the Wii U and 267GB for the 3DS. Marvel President Victoria Alonso Fired Amid Visual Effects Criticisms and Phase 5 Preparations
Victoria Alonso, the longtime Marvel president in charge of physical production, post-production, VFX, and animation, has been fired at the behest of Disney co-chair Alan Bergman, according to a new report by Variety. This news has come as a surprise to many observers, as Alonso had been with Disney since 2006 and was known as one of the company’s most influential producers. Her work dates back to 2008’s Iron Man, where she was a co-producer and visual effects producer. It is unclear why Alonso was fired, but problems around Marvel’s visual effects have been in the news for some time now. The latest MCU project to garner criticism is Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania. Alonso was reportedly “blindsided” by the decision, and Kevin Feige, who was her direct boss, was apparently not involved in the decision.

Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts to pen Netflix’s “Gears of War” adaptation
Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts has joined Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the popular video game “Gears of War,” marking another attempt to bring the franchise to the big screen. Spaihts, who is best known for his work on “Dune” and “Doctor Strange,” will adapt one of gaming’s richest and most acclaimed video game sagas with over 40 million copies sold. The “Gears of War” franchise centers on a society divided and on the brink of collapse, facing total extinction by the monstrous Locust alien race. The ragtag Delta Squad, led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is charged with leading humanity’s last stand. Netflix’s partnership with The Coalition aims to first adapt the game into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for more stories to follow. Spaihts is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves “Gears of War,” according to The Coalition. Previous attempts to adapt the game have been unsuccessful. Universal hired F. Scott Frazier to write an adaptation in 2018, but no other moves were made on that project. With Netflix’s hiring of Spaihts, “Gears of War” fans have much to look forward to given the screenwriter’s wealth of experience adapting major genre IP. Source: Variety
