Benn Who Dares Wins by Dominic Sandbrook More about today’s guests: Don and Petie Kladstrup are former journalists, longtime residents of France and authors of three books, all wine-related but based around three wars that shook the world. Their first, "Wine & War: the French, the Nazis and the Battle for France’s Greatest Treasure,"is an international best-seller and tells the story of how French wine producers in World War II struggled to survive under the Nazi occupation. Their second book, "Champagne: How the World’s Most Glamorous Wine Triumphed Over War and Hard Times," revolves around World War I when nearly everything in that part of France was destroyed. Like "Wine & War," it's been translated into more than a dozen languages and become a hit worldwide. In this episode Monty Waldin interviews Martin Foradori Hofstätter, owner of the J. Hofstätter Winery in Tramin/Termeno, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Martin is the fourth generation of an iconic winery in an area which is the home of the Gewurtztraminer grape. Martin and Monty chat about the winery’s main markets outside of Italy: USA, Japan, Russia, and UK. Martin also discusses the Alto Adige terroir and factors which affect vine growing such as exposure (east/west facing), altitude, soils, and microclimates. He also talks about local grape varieties such as Gewurtztraminer, Lagrein, Schiava and traditional varieties such as Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc.
