What is dedication? The dictionary defines it as being devoted to a task or purpose. Ok, that's a start. But what is devotion then? Why are we devoted anyway? Let's check the dictionary again: -"love, loyalty, or enthusiasm for a person or activity". Well there it is, love. The most universal energy in the universe. Being dedicated is to love! Strip oneself of love... and you're entering a state of human misery. Back to love. Dedicated for life. Now we're going somewhere. Love your whole life. Yes, take the double meaning. Love your life and love during all your life. If you haven't already, imagine how indescribably full your life would be if you have found something or someone in your life that has so fully grasped your attention and curiosity that you dedicate your whole life to it! I hope you are not at the opposite end of this specter. I hope you are not living your life without ever being dedicated to something. For many people metal music is one of the things that grasps them so strongly that it remains a part of them for the rest of their life. Something about that level of dedication and performance is undeniably powerful and deserves your full attention. It is also one of the forms of expression where a group of individual performers merge into this one entity called a metal band. Where the whole is larger than the sum of its parts. "Dedicated for life" is one such band. A macedonian metal band from the 2000's that I've had the fortune to listen to and watch live several times. Even within the metal community they were unique. Absolutely professional and devoted to excellence. Never covered other songs. Always played their own material. No drinking, no smoking, no bullshitting. Just pure and raw metal. And leading by example, their lead singer - Kiril Jakimovski. Never really musically "officially" trained. Never even sang before until he got consumed by the force of metal music in his early teens. Driven by pure and unconstrained will to become a metal vocalist, he literally bled his way through to eventually become one. And not any one, but one of the most recognized metal voices in his time. Buried deep in his soul was this other version of him that he desperately wanted to express. But expressing a different version of self is not an easy task of course. Especially if it is a naturally introverted, down to earth, collected and calm metal lead singer. Certain conditions need to be met. Meticulous preparations need to be made. Supporting group of people around him need to be there. And all of that came to existence on stage. After countless hours of training, the band walks out on stage, one version of Kiril steps in, music starts and another version of Kiril comes alive. And why all this? What is the value of it? Well it's kinda hard to describe if you haven't experienced it. It's spiritual. It goes way deeper than the physical and mental. Once you enter the soul, it goes way deep in there too. And there's something about spiritual experiences that make them pricelessly valuable to our lives. They enrich our lives in such a way that they never lose value. Not with the passing of time, not with being covered by other experiences on top. Such are spiritual experiences. That's what is magical about music. It is timeless and spaceless. Its energy transcends the creator, goes through another dimension, sweeps into the receiver and creates a spiritual experience in there too. Or maybe it is created beyond us and we get to experience it and share it among us. Either way, to be dedicated for life is to enrich life with timeless and spaceless experiences. Slightly resembling such an experience are my feelings of great fortune and gratitude to have had the experience of having Kiril on the podcast and talk about dedication and life. Enjoy!
