Today, I am lucky to have here with me a profound and highly-driven keto advocate from the medical field, Dr. Ken Berry. Although his practice is not yet warmly accepted in our society today, he is firm on his stand when it comes to the ketogenic diet. Dr. Berry is the first physician in the family. It was always his childhood dream. At the age of 13, he started having severe migraines and thought he would not be fit for a medical doctor’s lifestyle. However, his condition got better during his college days and hoped that he could finally fulfill his dream. He was determined to change his way of eating when he was obese and became prediabetec at the age of 35. He knew his stressful lifestyle coupled with unhealthy eating habits contributed to his condition. Dr. Berry was further challenged to make a change in order to help his critically ill patients. His goal is to spread the truth about the ketogenic diet. Dr. Berry had already published a book entitled, “Lies My Doctor Told Me” and is increasing his reach with the help of social media channels. In this episode, Dr. Berry and I talked about ketogenic diet, type 2 diabetes, the 3 pillars of health and nutrition, exercise and more. He shared his journey with living his best life starting with the paleo diet then transitioning to low-carb diet and finally the ketogenic diet. He also shed some light as to why ketogenic diet doesn’t work for other people. Moreover, tips and strategies were shared on how to get the most out of the keto diet. Tune in! [07:56] The 3 Pillars of Health and Nutrition He want back to dig up his medical books and lecture notes to refresh his knowledge on his nutrition training. After reading up on the materials that he was able to retrieve, he was reminded that the foundation of health is knowledge and understanding of human nutrition. The 3 Pillars of Health and Nutrition: 1. Eat lots of whole grain 2. Don’t eat any saturated fat. 3. Jog. [09:32] The Unexpected Weight Gain He has an exceptional training background when it comes to parenteral nutrition. However, he admits that, when it comes to feeding a healthy human being in a disease-preventive way, he was clueless. Dr. Berry guided himself with the 3 pillars and applied it in his daily life. Despite his consistent hard work for 2 months, he still gained 5-10 pounds. [10:25] Thinking Outside The Medical Doctor Box Read different works on nutrition: Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution by Robert Atkins The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson He tried this new knowledge on himself starting with paleo and transitioned to a low-carb diet which got him better but still far from his health goal. Immediately felt better, lost weight, decreased inflammation. He then finally tried ketogenic diet and after 2 months he thought to offer it to his morbidly obese patients, many of which are scheduled for a gastric bypass which is a risky procedure. His patients started noticing his transformation and were curious about what he was doing. He finally recommended the ketogenic diet to his patients with the worst case of morbid obesity and they all started getting better. [12:43] Dr. Berry’s Patients on Keto Diet He monitors his patients closely since the diet was presumed to be dangerous. After 1 month, his patients would come back asking if they could do it for a longer period of time. They loved the diet and was very happy with the results Many patients, who cancelled their bariatric surgery, were coming to him because they wanted to lose fat naturally. He was very glad he found a tool that could help many others when the only option most of them had before was a bariatric surgery. He only recommended it to his sickest patients [16:28] Type 2 Diabetes and the Ketogenic Diet Type 2 Diabetes is not a disease. It is one of the many ways how poison in your diet can manifest itself. Poisons: Sugar Grains Industrial seed oils Removing these poisons from the diet results to type 2 diabetes going away. [18:42] Truth about EBM: Evidence-Based Medicine or Eminence-Based Diet American Diabetes Association (ADA) claims their diet recommendation is based on zero research and it’s based on expert consensus. Dr. Berry, on the other hand, believes in true evidence based medicine (EBM) but oftentimes, no meaningful research is done on a topic which makes EBM mean something else, “Eminence Based Diet” Leading authorities in the medical field decide what is considered EBM as standard of care and there are many instances in history wherein these EBM, such as lobotomy and provision of Valium to premenopausal women, have been further proven to be dangerous and ineffective. [22:10] What Led Him to His Life Mission Dr. Berry knew he was called to reverse type 2 diabetes and obesity. His wife, Neisha, an active social media user, asked him, “How many patients do you help a day in the clinic?” and “How many patients can you help on social media?”. He had no social media presence back then other than Facebook. His wife’s question made him realize he had a big goal social media can give him a bigger platform. Dr. Berry started with creating a YouTube channel and other social media accounts [26:28] Elevated A1C VS. Elevated LDL “An elevated A1C is a shotgun pointed at your heart and an elevated LDL might be a BB gun pointed at your arm”. After reading more research on LDL, Dr. Berry says it is not a risk factor. Elevated cholesterol and elevated LDL does not increase your risk of heart attack or stroke. This elevation may be caused by an inflammation in your body and it is it’s attempt of filling in the damage done in your arteries. Your body naturally makes cholesterol. Even the brain has its own cholesterol manufacturing process. An elevated A1C, elevated triglyceride level, and a low HDL level are more important markers than an elevated LDL. Doctors who are concerned with elevated cholesterol are already 10 years behind on their readings while doctors who are alarmed by elevated LDL are 3-5 years behind. American Heart Association’s (AHA/ACC) cardiac risk calculator does not factor in the LDL level but uses triglyceride and HDL levels. [32:33] Recommendation for the Use of Statins Recommendation for the use of statins will lower LDL level but will not positively influence your 10-year cardiac risk. The medical community continues to promote the use of statins because their paradigm has not yet shifted. Some medical practitioners are gaining awareness when it comes to this issue Many doctors are still relying on recommendations given by the AHA. However, big companies and corporations heavily influence the information distributed by the association We are slowly killing ourselves by taking harmful medication [36:05] Social Media is the Key Dr. Berry intends to use of social media to help spread the word and tell people to stop poisoning themselves. People are dying everyday because of belief on a false paradigm. Social media helps him educate and tell people to stop comiting suicide and stop letting your doctors commit homicide. Being loud and obnoxious about the information will help prevent unnecessary deaths. [37:59] The Story of Dr. Simon Weiss The quote: “The way you judge someone’s stature in the medical community is the length of their white coat” and a story on Dr. Simon Weiss which illustrates Dr. Ken Berry’s advocacy Back then doctors were seen as gentlemen and it was a common assumption that gentlemen are never dirty. Mortality rate of women and children were high because of the childbirth fever caused by unsanitary practices of doctors. Dr. Weiss observed that in poorer areas where midwives facilitated child birth instead of doctors and women and children were not affected by childbirth fever because midwives do not handle dissections in the morgue. Dr. Weiss published his research but because of his short coat, he was not taken seriously by other doctors. The unsanitary practice went on for 70-80 years before another doctor discovered Dr. Weiss’ research and shed light unto it. It took another decade before more doctors caught on to the proper practice of handwashing. With this, Dr. Ken Berry stands firm with his belief on the ketogenic diet and is willing to take the risk that comes with it so that people can know the truth. [43:20] Overcoming the Powdered Butt Syndrome Powdered Butt Syndrome is when people, for example your senior, don’t take you seriously no matter what you say or evidence you show. A third party source may be helpful with conveying the information to your family and friends which is what many people do. As with Dr. Berry, his videos takes a big part in encouraging people to listen and understand the truth about the ketogenic diet. [45:42] Why Ketogenic is Not Working for Other People? After enthusiastically getting in to keto, some people slack off and allow gradually themselves more and more carb loaded food items. This reduces fat loss and increases inflammation. People should have a friend, coach, that can re-check their diet Document what you’re eating and consult someone with knowledgeable on keto to figure out what you’re doing or eating wrong. Don’t easily trust and simply rely on what big food names claim when it comes to being healthy because there are loopholes they go through to make their products seem healthy enough. Big food corporations only care about making a profit and will do all things just to cut down on cost. [49:22] Dining in Restaurants Don’t be afraid to let restaurants know of the ingredients and food items that you’re avoiding in a keto diet. Tip: Have a laminated small laminated information card stating that “I’m allergic to sugar in all forms, all grains, and the following oils. Please do not include it in my meals”. As more people do this, big chain restaurants can go bankrupt or they can evolve to meet people’s need for real and safe human food. Be willing to go the extra penny for quality food. Accepting bad food because it’s cheap is as good as voting for it. Eating high fat food gives your body sufficient building blocks for building healthy cell membranes. [52:50] Restaurants and Their Oil Use Study shows a plate of french fries cooked in canola oil resulted to 132 days of membrane inflammation. Restaurants use cooking oils, such as canola and soybean oil, that easily oxidize and they don’t always change their cooking oils to cut down cost. These oils become deadlier as they get reused and get absorbed by the food you eat. [53:44] Consuming Healthy Oils As people develop healthier cell membranes, they can stay longer in the sun because they are now more able to form melanin. This prevents them from easily getting sun burnt and help them develop a tan instead. Even cells of other organs have cell membranes and they also need fat to form and function well. Food habit of consuming industrial seed and vegetable oil will contribute to the activation of bad genes. [55:16] Shopping for the Right Food Products Always read labels and check the ingredients of what you’re buying. If you’re not familiar with a word, search online what it is. “Generally Regarded As Safe” only means it won’t kill you quickly. [56:42] Exercise and Weight Loss “Exercise is a terrible approach to weight loss. If you’re goal is to lose weight, joining the gym is a waste of time and money.” Meaningful research show that exercising and moving more is a terrible strategy to lose fat. If you want to lose excess fat, change your diet. [58:00] Experts (PhDs, Scientists, Dietitians, Nutritionists, and Doctors) on Keto as a Fad Diet Most of today’s experts have the same thinking with doctors back in Dr. Weiss’ time who did not believe that handwashing was essential. They have a hard time accepting the truth or admitting that they are wrong. One of the many reasons may be losing part of their (online) following. Some may be afraid of losing they research support and funding. It is ignorance to think it’s possible to calculate one’s specific caloric needs through weight, height, and gender. Big corporations pay experts like them to convince the consumer that it’s alright to consume bad food items because they packed in small containers. Beware of people who promote “Eat more, move less”. [01:02:55] Patients Who Found Success in Keto The healthiest patients with the least chronic diseases are the ones who consume food products with the least amount of prohibited ingredients on the label. Eldest patient who passed away at 102 was in very good health, with an alert mind and a strong body. Majority of diet was made of vegetables and meat. Babies or kids who are fed by their parents with real whole foods did not develop eczema, allergies, and even acne. They consume one-ingredient food. [01:05:33] What Dr. Berry Is Most Excited About We’re close to the tipping point of having the low-carb keto carnivore diet as a norm now more than how where we were back in the 70s or 80s. Today, I am lucky to have here with me Prof. Brian Peskin, a world-leading scientist specializing in parent EFAs — termed PEOs — and their direct relationship to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and wound care (both traumatic and chronic).   Brian has always had one goal – to help people — regardless of personal sacrifice. But despite his integrity, Brian has suffered a lot of criticism and even slander as a reward for his hard work. Brian is not alone. Many other health researchers have also spoken the truth and were chastised for it.   Brian’s great genius is “connecting the dots” between established sciences that usually remain separated, and coupling his findings with real-life results. Science says one thing, and society is doing the opposite. Brian says more people need to be writing the science.   [12:50] You Never Build on the Past in Medicine   In medicine, you don’t look into the past – it doesn’t exist; it all starts today. Medicine is looking at studies, not science. Studies are open to misinterpretation. Ask your doctor what the metabolic pathway that causes your health issue is. Pathways are science. If your doctor doesn’t know the pathway, then don’t believe a word they say. Brian uses science to talk about food.   [17:30] Solving Type 1 Diabetes   Brian could not bring back a pancreas. Stop eating 4-6 times a day; we are not meant to be a goat. People who don’t know what they are talking about are putting others on an awful path. The diabetes epidemic has to stop.   [19:45] Stop Eating Every 2-3 Hours Brian has no idea why people think they need to eat every 2-3 hours. Carbs are sugars. You get just as much fat eating complex carbohydrates. The pancreas does not store insulin very well. If you eat six times a day, you blow your insulin reserve. The pancreas doesn’t know how to react to you eating so frequently. Eating every two to three hours came from the food industry. How much sugar is in your bloodstream? Less than a teaspoon. Brian double checked, and it still came back to one teaspoon. This is why exercise became a second job for some people, to burn off all the access sugar we are intaking.   [24:30] One Teaspoon of Sugar If you eat carbs, you’ll be using the sugar when you exercise. However, you would rather your body burn the fat (unless you are running a marathon). Most people quit their training program because it doesn’t work, and they are being told the wrong thing from their trainer.   [25:30] What Time to Cycle in Carbs Early morning is the best time to eat carbs. You don’t want to eat carbs at night because your blood sugar will stay high all night. For every ounce of carbohydrates you eat, you will need three ounces of water. If you eat the carbs at night, most likely, you are not doing that much activity. Make sure the carbs are good, get the bang for your buck. You can add carbs later in the day if you are going to stay active. If you eat carbs and you feel horrible, you’ve overeaten.   [32:20] Eating Too Many Carbs Your body wants it back to normal, so it needs to get the sugars out of the body. Exercise your body to get rid of the sugar, or burn it by starving. Brian says he doesn’t want to store it to begin with.   [34:00] Eating Fats and Protein to Excess Brian says you can’t overeat fat because your body physically won’t let you. Your appetite will eventually go away, and you will no longer want to eat anything else. To get no carbohydrates is virtually impossible. If you eat just fats and proteins, none of that protein is going to fat. 58% of a steak is water after it’s cooked. 70% of that steak is burned up in digestion. Most people don’t know this and have never seen it in writing.   [36:30] Eating Steak with Ketchup You’ve introduced carbohydrates when adding ketchup to steak. You can have some carbs; you don’t need zero. For instance, if you want to have a sandwich, have one slice of bread. Carbohydrates are very cheap and inexpensive. Fats, proteins, and cheeses are expensive.   [38:00] How to Gain Fat Faster Fat does nothing on its own. Minimizing carbs is always the answer. The average person can be just fine with minimum carbs. Do not have a high carb meal after a fast. The smartest thing you can do is a steak coming off of a fast. Do not eat anything with carbohydrates.   [42:00] Never Use Vegetable Oil or Fish Oil Smoke 2 packs a day for 28 years, how many people will develop lung cancer? 16% of people will develop lung cancer. If you give processed oil to people, most people will develop heart conditions. Fish oil goes rancid immediately. Dermatologists don’t have a clue why skin cancer rates aren’t going down. Sometimes, dermatologists will even prescribe fish oil to their patients to clear acne. Fish oil destroys your immune system. Brian doesn’t even know what to say. The most pristine fish oil in the world, in moderation, is still wrong. Fish oil doesn’t help anything; it fails at everything!   [52:40] Organic Supplements   Organic isn’t better because of more vitamins; it’s because they lack a negative. Many supplements will have carcinogens in them. If we take carcinogens over a long period of time, we will end up with severe health problems. You want more Omega-6 in your supplements.   [57:15] Diet is More Important Than Exercise You don’t want your appetite going through the roof. With carbohydrates, you can’t exercise enough. You don’t start burning fat right away. Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 42 with Clint Ober!   Today, I am lucky to have here with me the CEO of EarthFX Inc. author, and someone who is continually working to spread awareness about grounding, Clint Ober.   Clinton Ober is CEO of EarthFX Inc., a research and development company located in Palm Springs. He first learned of grounding when marketing and installing Cable TV systems in Billings, Montana, in the early 1960s. A decade later, he formed Telecrafter Corporation and built it into the largest provider of cable installation services in the United States. This company specialized in the proper grounding of cable installations for safety and signal stability.   Following a health challenge in 1995, he retired and embarked on a personal journey looking for a higher purpose in life. During his travels, he noticed people wearing plastic and rubber-soled shoes that insulate the body from Earth. He wondered if no longer being naturally grounded could affect us.   The question led to an experiment that suggested grounding reduced pain and improved sleep. He developed a working hypothesis: Grounding normalizes the functioning of all body systems (Corollary: The body utilizes the Earth's electrical potential to maintain its internal electrical stability for the normal functioning of all self-regulating and self-healing systems).   Over the past twenty years, he has supported a host of research studies that collectively demonstrate that grounding reduces inflammation and promotes the normal functioning of all body systems.   In this episode, Clint and I talk about how grounding works and what the benefits are. When you connect anything to the Earth, it holds it at Earth’s potential; it reduces noise, fire, and charge. One day, Clint was having static problems. Intuitively, he wondered if the loss of contact with the Earth could be affecting his body. Everything in the body is electrical.   [12:45] Plastic Sole Shoes Clint says plastic sole shoes make us insulate ourselves from Earth. Insolating ourselves from the Earth is like not having enough oxygen. It became apparent that grounding people will make the pain go away.   [16:00] Electrical Surface Charge on Red Blood Cells When you touch the Earth, your body equalizes with the Earth. The red blood cells increase by a factor of 2.7 – an increase of 300%. Like little negative magnets, the cells repel each other – they can’t stick together. It prevents inflammation. As soon as you ground the body, inflammation disappears.   [18:00] Inflammation in the Body You can’t have pain unless you have inflammation first. Pain is a signal to the body and the brain that you have inflammation, and your body is on fire. Inflammation presents differently in various people based on their genetics and lifestyle. How does inflammation begin? If you have no access to electrons, your immune system will encapsulate the damage.   [22:20] Grounding with Nike Clint did work with Nike; whether it is true or not, Nike didn’t want to touch it. Nike said when people come into their stores and want a grounded shoe, they will start making a grounded shoe.   [23:00] Clint’s Health Problems Clint’s doctors revealed that he had an abscess in his liver. They said there wasn’t much they could do; he was young enough to get a new liver, but he didn’t have much time. When Clint woke up, he had no energy whatsoever because they cut out a majority of his liver. Clint could hardly get out of bed; it took him a week to walk to the kitchen and six months to make it one mile. It took less than one year for Clint’s liver to regenerate in size.   [26:00] The Definition of Grounding Grounding means returned to norma. In electrical terms, grounding means to be at Earth’s potential. The easiest thing to do is to take your shoes off and stand barefoot on the Earth. You can’t have inflammation on a grounded body. The hands and feet are equal; you can also put your hands on the Earth.   [29:00] Grounding Benefits While Wearing Leather Shoes If you are wearing moccasins, they can ground you almost instantly. Wearing shoes made from conventional leather will have no plastic in them whatsoever. The more you wear them means you will build up more salts and moisture in the shoes.   [30:10] The Most Surprising Benefit of Grounding The blood dramatically shifts; it changes. It’s hard to be upset or mad when your bare feet are on the ground.   [37:20] Grounding Effects on Cortisol During a study, everybody’s cortisol was way high in the morning and at night. The subjects would be fatigued during the day. After Clint grounded them, their cortisol levels evened out. At 4:00 am, your cortisol skyrockets – it’s what allows you to get out of bed in the morning. If you normalize cortisol, you will be able to sleep through the night. If your cortisol is elevated, you will not be able to sleep. Reducing cortisol means your sleep will improve. If you are living on the east coast timeframe, and you go to the west coast, your cortisol will be out of whack. By grounding, your jet lag will completely synchronize.   [42:00] Grounding After a Thunderstorm During a thunderstorm, there are electron imbalances. If you go to the top of a mountain and you’re grounded, then the atmosphere is positive, and the Earth is negative. The atmosphere is pulling electrons through your body like an antenna.   [44:35] Pets Benefit From Grounding Animals don’t have modern health disorders. All of the animals who live indoors with their owners have diseases like their owners. Once people began keeping horses in their barns, the horses started getting modern health disorders. When he got there, his grandmother had passed. His grandmother was obese, which ultimately contributed to her passing in her early 60’s. This initiated Ryan’s entire journey of educating people.   [03:45] The Future of Obesity The obesity trend in children is unacceptable. Obesity trends are not only in America, but it is also happening all over the world. At the end of the day, it takes inspired action.   [06:50] How Ryan Started with Keto Ryan is a self-proclaimed carboholic. After college, Ryan could no longer eat his normal amount of carbs. He realized his metabolism wasn’t the same. The first time Ryan started the keto diet, he felt terrible. Three times a day, he would make keto moose, and that was literally all he ate.   [10:00] Biggest Reason for the Keto Flu It is going to take time for your body to adjust to using fat as fuel. The use of electrolytes can mitigate a lot of the flu. Sodium has been demonized; however, you need to be salting everything. Some people can completely switch to keto, whereas other people need to transition to the diet slowly. Make habit changes to develop a long-term lifestyle.   [13:45] Building Muscle with the Ketogenic Diet You need to allow time for the adaptation period. The phase may be one to three weeks. Plus, you probably will not be training as hard. After you adapt, the ketogenic diet group will gain just as much muscle as individuals who are eating a carbohydrate diet. Each group ate the exact same amount of protein.   [17:40] Why People Fail with the Ketogenic Diet A lot of people do not have the right information about the ketogenic diet. Also, people have trouble understanding what constitutes a well-formulated ketogenic diet and how to get electrolytes. Eating keto isn’t about eating high-fat, it is about eating low-carb.   [20:10] Long-Term Keto Success Dial-in the electrolytes. Don’t be afraid of having tons of sodium. However, you don’t want table salt. Movement – if you want long-term benefits, you need some form of movement. This doesn’t have to be doing squats at the gym; you could be going for a walk or a hike once a day. Mindset – Ryan calls it intermittent eating rather than intermittent fasting. Find a place where you are comfortable.   [24:00] Working Out While Fasting If your goal is to become a bodybuilder, working out while fasting probably won’t help with that goal. Ryan recommends shifting your eating habits earlier. Many people skip breakfast, then eat lunch and dinner. Ryan says to eat a bigger breakfast and then eat a smaller dinner.   [27:35] The Ketogenic Bible The Ketogenic Bible: The Authoritative Guide to Ketosis makes understanding keto practical. Jacob Wilson and Ryan Lowery offer a comprehensive look at the ketogenic diet and the fat-burning state it induces, ketosis. Ryan’s favorite part of writing the book was looking up the history. For instance, Ryan found out the political motivations behind the reason’s society eats the way it does. All calories are not the same. Carb calories vs. fiber calories are completely different. If you are trying to diet on a low-fat diet vs. a low-carb diet, the adherence rate to a low-carb diet is much higher. On a low-carb diet, people tend to eat fewer calories by nature.   [49:00] What Ryan is Most Excited About The potential we see in the neurological areas is so fascinating because keto is much more than a fat loss lifestyle. Keto provides a fuel source for the brain to utilize. Ryan works with NFL alumni. Some of them can’t leave their house without a monitor because they don’t know how to get home. Instead of attacking it with drugs, it could be their brain starving for energy.   [55:30] The Definition of Perfect Health Health is multifaceted. Living in a state of fulfillment and gratitude will take up a majority of our health.
