Dr Jeff Matheson | Why the quality of your fats on keto matter! KKP: 237

Today, I am blessed to have here with me for the THIRD time Dr. Jeff Matheson. He is the co-founder of an all-natural migraine and headache centre, which promotes a non-narcotic approach to pain and headache management. Plus, Dr. Jeff Matheson is the co-founder and medical director of Pure Life Science. Dr. Jeff Matheson successfully practiced medicine in emergency departments across Canada and internationally, from Ontario, Newfoundland, and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. He later was appointed Medical Director of Med-EmergInc in 1998, a company dedicated to staffing underserved hospitals in Canada. Dr. Matheson has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South East Asia and well as Oceania. According to Dr. Matheson, “traveling is the best education!” Dr. Matheson is an enthusiastic believer, as well as being immersed in other cultures. Similarly, if one does not listen to patients, one won’t hear what is necessary to understand the patient’s problem, i.e., the patient’s “culture.” It is with this ability to listen and empathize with the patients that Dr. Matheson allows an accurate diagnosis and develop sustainable solutions, optimizing health, and patient outcomes. If a solution cannot be determined, resources will be dedicated, through the involvement of alternative care specialists, ascertaining the best possible treatment for the patient by trying to treat causes, not just manage symptoms. In this episode, Dr. Jeff Matheson dives straight into how our body will produce energy through our cell membranes. If someone lacks energy, they usually think they have a hormone problem, meaning they need to take more hormones. However, that's not the case. Dr. Jeff Matheson explains how our hormones require a delicate balance; adding exogenous hormones will push our bodies out of balance. Instead, think about making different nutritional decisions to fix any hormone irregularities. Later, we discuss why keto and fasting are great for our cells and why fish oils aren't so great for them. Tune in as we chat all about Pure Life Omegas. Pure Form Omega: https://purelifescience.com/products/pure-form-omega-natural (Use code: Ben4) Pure Form Omega Liquid: https://purelifescience.com/products/pure-form-omega-liquid (Use code: Ben3) [01:15] How Our Body Will Produce Energy We're made up of about 70 trillion cells. Our body is great at communication, not only within each organ but between organs. All this communication is done through the cell membranes. The cell membrane is the basic divide between the outside world and the inside world – that’s where the fundamental communication takes place. All hormonal issues boil down to unhealthy cell membranes. [03:45] Hormones Aren’t That Simple Hormones need a delicate balance. If you start adding exogenous hormones into the system, you're going to push that system out of balance. How adding exogenous hormones into your body will affect you later on down the road is really difficult to predict. The whole hormonal cascade is extremely complex. When people correct their underlying nutritional issues, usually within six to nine months, they should be able to come off all exogenous hormones. [06:25] Bad Things That Develop In Our Cells The problem that will affect people first is mitochondrial issues. The mitochondria is a very high-energy place, it's supposed to produce lots of energy, but it can be screwed up fairly easily. The first thing that people feel is fatigue - that's that mitochondria sort of breaking down. Later down the road, genetic issues will show up, and that’s when you start getting cancers. [09:15] Why Your Supplements Might Not Be Working If you have an unhealthy cell membrane, things can't get in. On average, the cell membrane is 50% fat. If you have abnormal fats in that cell membrane, that membrane becomes more like plastic. When you put plastic wrap on something, not a lot of stuff gets through. So, you won't be able to get good things in very efficiently, and you won't be able to get the bad things out very efficiently. It's only a matter of time in that kind of situation until you have a total cell breakdown. [14:30] How Keto & Fasting Help Support The Cell Membrane The brain is about 70% fat – it operates on keto about seven to eleven times more efficiently than on carbohydrates. Fat-based energy production is way more efficient. Every single one of our ancestors did keto because their environment forced them into it. Once you achieve metabolic freedom and flexibility, your body can actually manufacture glucose from the fat and from protein. [18:20] Is Omega-6 Bad For You? Omega-6 isn’t bad for you; processed omega-6 is bad for you. Omega-6 has the same oxygen-binding capacity as hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is also intimately bound to the cell membrane; so, they work well together. After people take the proper amount of omega-6, they feel better. Plus, they will be able to feel it fast. [21:10] The Issue With Fish Oil Fish oil is high in EPA and DHA. They're what we call unsaturated are much more unstable. Not only is fish oil too unstable for us, it's not really needed in very large quantities. As it turns out, the brain only uses about seven and a half milligrams per day of EPA and DHA. People on a high dose of fish oil will have a problem with nose bleeds – it’s an obvious example of fluidity. If you overload yourself with fish oil, the mitochondria is only half as efficient as it should be. [34:55] Is Eating Fish Bad Too? You can certainly eat fish. When you cook it, you're destroying the fats anyways. It's the deepwater fish that are higher in EPA and DHA. Fish have a lot of good nutrition in it unless it's been contaminated with heavy metals and stuff. In Japan, where they eat mostly raw fish, they do have higher rates of hemorrhagic strokes. Fish that have fewer heavy metals are ones with a fast turnover like sardines. Tuna is a bad one because tuna will eat a lot of other fish and is lower on the food chain. [39:45] About Pure Form Pure Form Omega® Natural is an organic, plant-based, fish-free, cold-pressed, source of omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids. It has been processed in a way that retains all the functions of the fat. It is a proprietary formulation made up of primrose oil, sunflower seed oil, pumpkin seed oil, and organic extra virgin coconut oil. These are all excellent sources of essential omega-6, along with organic flaxseed oil for essential omega-3, to obtain what we consider the ideal omega 3-6 combination. [45:25] Good vs. Bad Sunflower Oil If you look at the average sunflower oil, even organic sunflower oil that's on the shelf, it's not cold-pressed. Heat and oxygen are bad for fats. When you do cold pressure, you actually lose about 20% of the oil. You can put a processed oil on the shelf for years; it'll look the same. [51:20] Hangover Prevention Since the brain is 70% fat, you put all the good fats in the brain, you don't get headaches. Just another reason to love Pure Form Omega®. However, most people will feel a little tired the next day because alcohol disturbs your sleep pattern. Luckily, you won't have the headache and all the other stuff that accompanies those hangovers. Dr. Jason Fung - Diabetes, Obesity, Intermittent Fasting, & The Calories Debacle – KKP 24

Dr. Jason Fung - Diabetes, Obesity, Intermittent Fasting, & The Calories Debacle – KKP 24

Today’s episode is very close to my heart as I have a personal experience with diabetes. My father developed Type II Diabetes and I have watched him struggle with this disease. It was a very difficult time of my life. Ever since he passed away five years ago, I set out and study diabetes and why my fathers doctors’ advice did not work.   I came across the book The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss by Dr. Jason Fung where he explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good. The information that I now know would’ve saved my father’s life. Which is why I fully support Dr. Jason Fung’s, today’s guest, on his mission to spread as much information on diabetes and intermittent fasting to help as many people as possible.   Dr. Jason Fung is a Canadian nephrologist. He’s a world-leading expert on intermittent fasting and low carb, especially for treating people with type 2 diabetes. He has written three best-selling health books and he co-founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program.   Dr. Fung works with Team Diet Doctor where they make it simple for people to understand and implement intermittent fasting, to improve their health.   In this episode, we break down every single thing you need to know about calories, obesity, diabetes and intermittent fasting. Sit tight and enjoy!   This episode is sponsored by the world's healthiest coffee beans, Purity coffee. Get your beans delivered to your door: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com     In this episode, you'll discover:   [00:17] How Dr. Fung got into the health space, particularly nephrology As a Math and Science person, Dr. Fung initially thought he would pursue the field of engineering. He then decided that being a physician was more fitted to his style. After years in the university, he figured that he was also invested in doing research. As a physician, he can help people and do some research at the same time. In choosing a specialty, Dr. Fung felt that Nephrology suited his personality better. Nephrology is a complex specialty which is sort of a thinking-person speciality unlike cardiology which is more of an action specialty (i.e surgery)   [4:13] Diabetes, Obesity and Intermittent Fasting The most common and important cause of kidney disease is Type II Diabetes which is closely related to weight gain and obesity. Treating kidney diseases with medications is the least effective way to treat people. You have to look at the root cause of the disease in order to be successful in treating it. Which is why, for Dr. Fung, the real question was “what causes weight gain?” Nutrition is not considered part of the medical specialty which explains why doctors depend on medications to treat certain illnesses. Second question: What are you gonna do about it? Obesity was not existent during the 1970s. Now, 70% of Americans are obese. Intermittent Fasting: People suffering with Type II Diabetes for 20+ years immediately felt better by intermittent fasting. Fasting is less fun that eating pizza and doughnuts. Fasting is tough work. It is important to give people undergoing intermittent fasting the support and education they need.   [12:30] The Calorie Debacle Coca-Cola created a group called the Global Energy Balance Network to keep people focused on calories. They wanted people to think that 100 calories of broccoli is equivalent to 100 calories of Coca-Cola which is completely wrong. If you think that if you can eat cookies, drink coke and exercise then, you’ll be healthy, you are wrong. But, Coca-Cola wants you to think that this is right. Hormones control hunger, telling our body when to eat and when to stop. Different calorie sources elicit different hormonal responses. Diet and exercise are totally different things. Diet is what you eat. It affects the liver mostly. Exercise is mostly about skeletal muscles. Calorie is not a physiologic term. There’s no calorie-receptors in our body. We think that excessive intake of calories causes obesity. We think that this is a caloric imbalance. Too many ‘calories in’ compared to too few ‘calories out’ leads to weight gain. This Calorie Balance model of obesity has been drilled into us since childhood. Read more about the Calorie Debacle here.     [18:40] Intermittent Fasting as a reasonable alternative to treat patients Ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting are not as famous as low-carb diet. Jason Fung received a lot of backlash when he started to introduce intermittent fasting to his patients. Because of IF, patients were getting better. At the end of the day, you can’t ignore that. Other doctors started to notice the success of IF. Through his book, The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss, Dr. Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good.   [25:55] Why the common treatments for type 2 diabetes seem to make things worse Type II Diabetes is a reversible disease. The standard treatment of Type II diabetes focused on getting the sugar down by medications. Doctors should’ve focused on the patient’s diet to help them lose weight because if you lose weight, your diabetes gets better. Jason Fung forever changed the way we think about obesity and he wanted to do the same for type 2 diabetes through his book The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally He explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. People cannot just make a decision to burn more fat calories, or to feel less hungry. These are physiological issues and must be addressed via physiology.   [31:49] Dr. Fung’s Intensive Dietary Management (IDM) program The IDM program helps people reach their health goals through intermittent fasting and simple-to-follow time-restricted eating strategies. It’s a structured digital lifestyle intervention developed by Megan Ramos and Dr. Jason Fung that provides you with all the education and support you need to succeed. At least several thousands of people have gone through the Intensive Dietary Management program and the number keeps adding up.   For 2019 years, people have already been talking about fasting and they don’t talk about it as a terrible thing. Fung clarifies that he didn’t invent intermittent fasting. He just started talking about it because it seems logical to him.   [37:14] Guinness World Record on the Longest Recorded Fast In the 1971 edition of The Guinness Book of Records, Barbieri's 382-day fast was recognized as the longest recorded. The most important thing is that people feel well throughout their entire fasting. For 365 days a year, 3 meals a day, you are taking a total of 1000 meals per year. If you do a 7-day fast, you’re going to miss 21 of that 1000. How is that a big deal?   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle Visit the official YouTube channel of Dr. Jason Fung To know more about Intermittent Fasting, click here Are you interested in keto or low carb? Grass Fed vs Grain Fed, Folate vs Folic Acid, Food, Anxiety & Depression, – Autumn Smith KKP 21

Grass Fed vs Grain Fed, Folate vs Folic Acid, Food, Anxiety & Depression, – Autumn Smith KKP 21

Today’s episode is a story about pain and struggles and how these experiences help develop passion and purpose. Autumn Smith, joins us today to share her own wellness journey of healing from IBS and her mission to inspire people to take care of themselves. She gives tips on diet and nutrition, exercise, drugs/medicines, and routine for greater physical and mental health, including the importance of consistently testing your blood sugar levels. You don’t want to miss this one!   Autumn suffered acute digestive issues since she was a teenager and numerous experts failed to offer solutions that worked. Very concerned, her husband, Chas took matters into his own hands. His extensive research led him to the paleo diet.   Together they implemented its principles for 30 days and by the end, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved. With this wonderful learning experience, Autumn focused on disseminating information to facilitate wellness for everyone. She achieves this through Paleovalley and Wild Pastures.   Paleovalley creates products with integrity that are free from problematic ingredients and teeming with ingredients that promote vibrant health. Their products are a labor of love, and their only hope is that they help your family feel as vibrant as theirs. I, myself, testify to that.   If you want to know more about their products and try them for yourself, visit their store here. They jumped from doctor to doctor and nobody really gave her a ‘healing’ answer. Autumn managed her pain on her own and she now knows that there’s a profound gut and brain connection. With Autumn’s decision to manage it instead of address it, her mental health started to deteriorate. It was so bad that Autumn was kicked out of her parents’ house before she even graduated from high school. This experience helped her develop the level responsibility she has today. From rock bottom, she pulled it together, got to college, moved to LA, pursued a dance career where she worked for Tracy Anderson, a celebrity fitness trainer. Her husband noticed that she is still suffering a lot that they decided to visit one last doctor. Still, no ‘healing’ answer was given. Through their self-guided research, she and her husband healed her digestive issues with the paleo diet. Within 30 days of the paleo diet, her digestive issues completely went away. Through Paleovalley, Autumn’s purpose is to facilitate wellness for everyone else by disseminating excellent nutritional information and organic food products with 100 million people worldwide   [5:50] Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Feeling bloated after meals. Experiencing pain and cramps in the lower abdomen. Getting itchy skin rashes or blisters. Deteriorating mental health. Unstable blood sugar levels.   [6:40] There is no cookie-cutter approach on regulating your blood sugar levels. Keto diet has been shown to improve blood sugar control. Regulating your blood sugar level is similar to a fingerprint. It is very unique. Number 1 step: Test your blood sugar levels. It is important to test. You cannot get all the information you need from the glycemic index and glycemic load. Fifty (50%) of people today are insulin resistant → highly correlated with the number of people with mental health issues.     [9:33] Mental Health, Drugs and Nutrition. Anti-anxiety drugs increase the risk of addiction in just 4 days. The pharmaceutical industry taught us the depression is just a case of serotonin-deficiency. Dietary intervention for people with mental health issues: Stabilize your blood sugar level. Address nutrient-deficiency. Track nutrition & count calories. (e.g Cronometer) Most mental health issues today are rooted with the immune system inflammation. Make sure you are not eating inflammatory foods. Identify your food sensitivities and gut issues.   [15:58] Foods, Anxiety and Depression Foods that trigger anxiety and depression: Sugar Gluten Back in the 1950s, there’s an association with gluten and schizophrenia Dairy Gluten and dairy breakdown into exorphins. These chemicals make you feel good in the moment but a little while after, they take you down and make you feel terrible. Caffeine Foods that reduce anxiety and depression: Seafoods (B12 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids) Organ Meats Vitamin A Folate Riboflavin Vegetables For a full list of foods with purported mental-health benefits, check out the study Antidepressant foods: An evidence-based nutrient profiling system for depression   [23:20] Story behind Paleovalley To heal her digestive issues, Autumn eliminated refined foods, shopped at local farmers’ market, ate fresh organic fruits and vegetables, grass fed meats and wild seafood. By the end of a 30-day period, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved Autumn and her husband, Chas, originally focused on disseminating information. They soon realized that there simply weren’t many truly healthy food products on the market. Realizing that they had an important job to do, they launched Paleovalley which aims to create products with integrity that are free from problematic ingredients and teeming with ingredients that promote vibrant health.   [27:35] Folate vs. Folic Acid Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B9. Research suggests that your body won’t use it as efficiently as folate. Folate is the food form of vitamin B9. People with MTHFR, a genetic mutation 50% of the population has, won't be able to use these fake B Vitamins which interferes with the metabolism of the real ones.   [30:00] Differentiating grass fed animals from the others Grass fed animals are fed with grass and grains. They are free to roam around in their pasture. They are not exposed to pesticides. Products of grass fed animals have higher nutrient levels, better fatty acid profile, higher antioxidant levels and higher mineral content. Grass fed farmers can use a number of different grazing styles. Continuous grazing Animals graze a pasture for an extended amount of time with no, or infrequent rest to the plants from grazing. Not ideal since it degrades the environment Rotational grazing Mimic nature A system where a large pasture is divided into smaller paddocks allowing livestock to be easily moved from one paddock to another Stimulates rapid grass growth   [38:18] Autumn’s decision of not being in retail stores Paleovalley’s goal is to produce affordable products for consumers. “If we don’t go to retail, we don’t pay the extra costs associated with going into retail.” This allows them to keep their integrity high. “Our ultimate goal is to make it accessible. Retail, sometimes, does the opposite.”   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle To know more about Autumn Smith and Paleovalley, click here Wild Pastures - From Pasture-Centric Farms To Your Table Connect with Autumn: autumn@paleovalley.com Check out Paleovalley’s products. BC), Greek philosopher and mathematician, founder of the famous school of philosophy, systematically starved for 40 days, rightly believing that it increases the mental perception and creativity. He demanded strict 40-day fast on water alone from each of his numerous disciples and followers.   Hippocrates (460-357 years BC) - a physician who owns a great medical commandment: “Do no harm!”, was an ardent supporter of moderation and treatment through fasting. He wrote: “The addition of food should be much rarer, since it is often useful to completely take it away while the patient can withstand it, until the force of the disease reaches its maturity. The man carries within him a doctor; you just have to help him do his work. If the body is not cleared, then the more you feed it, the more it will be harmed.
